AT AVALON STORER WINS A SECOND ALFIES EXCAVATIONS ROUND FOR SEASON
Portland racer Daniel Storer became the first driver for the season to win two rounds in the ‘Alfies
Excavations & Plant Hire’ Super Series for Wingless Sprints when he was too good for David Cook &
Peter Logue this past Saturday night February the 13th at Avalon Raceway, as a result strengthening
his lead at the head of the points table.
For the only time in the season for Wingless the night began with a time trial session & over three
groups with a fast time of 15.938 from David Cook in session three putting him at the top of the
times sheet from Peter Logue who ran a 15.956 in the second session. Interestingly the eventual
event winner was a huge .8 of a second behind the Cook time.
With points for the time trails banked drivers got into two heat races each.
Luke Storer and his brother Daniel began on the front row of heat one & Daniel got the lead right
from lap one going on to defeat Luke, Travis Millar, Mark Balcombe & Scott Drew.
Following on from a brother & brother top two was a father and son top two when Peter Logue
defeat son Wayne in the second heat with Darcy McGlade, Jason Langdon & Victorian champion
James Wren completing the top five when Logue Snr lead from start to finish.
Our top time trialist Cook then came out ahead of Andy Hibbert, Sam Wren, Rhys Baxter & David
Alford in the third heat when he led start to finish.
The first green to chequer heat race was run in the fourth with Glenn Watts taking a win ahead of
Millar, Daniel Storer, Drew & Marcus Green in a finish with only .482 of a second separating the lead
two cars. Luke Cole had led the first eight laps before trailing in towards the back of the field
Heat five also went the distance without stoppage and Mark Balcombe picked up the big qualifying
points defeating Layton Orchard, Ebony Hobson, Baxter & Leigh Balcombe with a margin of just over
a second back to second place.
In the final heat race a fastest ten lap time of the night was set by James Wren in his win over
Michael Skene, Jay Nicolaisen, Alford & Sam Wren. The time of 2 minutes 32.758 seconds with a
three second gap back to second after Wren crossed the finish line. Wren had started fifth before
taking the lead on lap two.
A shortened last chance qualifier moved a few drivers into the main race including Jason Langdon,
Skene, Jay Nicolaisen & Leigh Balcombe.
As the green let the field go for the twenty lap feature event Daniel Storer got the jump on Cook
with Peter Logue, Millar, Mark Balcombe, Sam Wren, James Wren & Wayne Logue in chase four laps
later the leaders remained the same whilst James Wren moved from seventh to fourth.
For the next fourteen laps everything moved along in the same order until on lap nineteen where
Millar pulled out with mechanical issues and then again on lap twenty Wren rode a wheel and
flipped over causing a red light stoppage.
Official results with Daniel Storer crossing the line in first were sorted out as being Cook in second
then Peter Logue, Mark Balcombe, Swan Wren, Wayne Logue, Baxter & Hibbert.
Afterwards Storer was pleased to increase his lead in the series. “With all the top drivers supporting
the series through to the end it was a great effort by my team. We have two cars on the go each
round & both cars run strong. Thank you to the series supporters from Alfies and to all the
volunteers who make sure we have a show each week to go to.”
The Super Series is supported by the team at Alfies Excavations & Plant Hire.

WREN GOES BACK TO BACK IN VICTORIAN WINGLESS TITLE
James Wren has pulled off a sensational start to finish victory in this year’s thirty lap Victorian
Wingless title on Saturday February the 6th at 'Heytesbury Stockfeeds' Simpson Speedway when he
led Tony Moule & Simpson local Luke Weel to the finish on his way to a back to back result after last
season's win.
Wren started from the pole position leading Glenn Watts & South Australian Trent Gravestock on lap
one of the title race with David Cook & Luke Storer in the picture also.
Moule who began in eighth moved to fourth by lap four then to third on lap ten as Weel moved up
behind him. David Alford claimed a top five position when Cobden's Rhys Baxter struck trouble &
started to go backwards after clipping The infield marker tyres in turn three & four and broke the
front end of his car ensuring he pulled out of the race.
Wren was still way out in front, half a lap ahead of the field despite an earlier scare when a back
marker went to pull off the track in front of Wren requiring him to take evasive action through the
infield doing a turn three & four pass.
On lap twenty eight Wayne Logue moved to fourth & Alford dropped to sixth and the positions
remained that way for the final two laps, only for Logue to cop a penalty after the race and be put
back two places for a bump & run pass on Alford.
Wren's margin after late race cautions was only two seconds back to second, however the right
driver won as Wren, Moule, Weel, Langdon, Alford, Wayne Logue, Hibbert, Leigh Balcombe,
McGlade, Klemm & Robilliard finished the title.
After the race Wren was joyous in victory. "This division with so many cars is a tough title to win; to
win it back to back feels incredible. What a great crew I have, I thank them all for all they do with me
& for me. Thank you to Simpson & its volunteers & the Victorian Wingless who do what they do to
allow us this opportunity. Congrats to the place getters on their results."
Earlier twelve heat races were ran with seven of them going the distance from start to finish
including the very first of the night won by South Australian Brett Ireland by just over a second from
Darcy McGlade whilst Glenn Watts was fast despite being outside the top five.
A huge seven second win to Luke Storer in the second heat in another start to finish heat would be
the biggest victory through the heat races whilst Clint McLaren was sensational moving forward
from eighth on the starting line up. Gravestock won heat three whilst a pre event favourite Travis
Millar & Baxter got tangled up in a race incident with Millar left fixing steering & missing his second
heat, Tim Ludeman the fourth heat leading every lap & Moule took the chequer flag in the fifth heat.
Glenn Watts came up trumps in heat six whilst Jason Langdon won by the smallest margin of the
night at .173 of a second in heat seven over Daniel Storer. Baxter was another start to finish leader
come winner in heat eight and David Cook won the ninth heat.
The fastest heat of the night came in the tenth with Andy Hibbert clicking a 2 minute 30.687 second
result with his first win for the night in which he also set the fastest one lap time of the night at
14.883 before James Wren & Wayne Logue took out first place in the two final heats ensuring no
driver on the night won more than one heat.
Last chance qualifiers then lifted eight drivers from two races into the title race with twelve direct
qualifiers with Hibbert, Baxter, Leigh Balcombe & Mark Balcombe transferring from the first and Paul
Drew, Paul Robillard, McLaren &'Ray Klemm from the second with both races also running start to
finish without stoppages.
Wingless President Troy Small was pleased with a successful title. "I would just like to reiterate what
the drivers are saying & thank Simpson for a great event; we hope to be back for a title again not too
far in the future. I also want to thank our team of volunteers, without them it would be a tough
road, so thank you. Well done to James on his fantastic back to back result.
