TThe proceeds from the auction will benefit the Municipality Surf School of Punta Hermosa to buy new surfboard and teach the kids to surf and give the opportunity to learn new skills with a healthy activity and stay away from bad habits.
Throughout the year the surf school offers free surf classes to underprivileged kids ranging from four years old to teenagers. The school provides free surfboards and classes for students from Punta Hermosa that are not able buy a their own wetsuits or surfboards.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre commented: “Today we had very important guests, the children of Punta Hermosa. Thanks to the donation of the event art by painter Flavio Caporali, these and other children, will get to surf on boards that will be bought with the proceedings of the auction of the painting. Flavio is not just an amazing artist, he’s a top big wave rider and the nicest human being”.

Flavio Caporali, the artist of the painting.
“I have lived in Peru for many years, and I have riden so many waves and had great friendships from all the local people I have met. Now I want to give something back to the community through my art, as a way of thanking them for the great experiences I have enjoyed here. I hope that through this initiative we can continue giving the children of Punta Hermosa a better future through surfing. I want to personally thank the continued support from the ISA and its President Fernando Aguerre, the Municipality of Punta Hermosa and its Mayor, Guillermo Fernandez, and our sponsors Sunset Surfboard, AIWIS (All I Want Is Surf) Clothing, Olas Peru – Escuela de Tabla, and Trattoria Don Angelo.”
The money raised from the auction will benefit the surf school with the goal of purchasing 10 new surfboards for the Municipal Surf School of Punta Hermosa and equipment like wetsuits and wax.

In the first heat of the day, it was a history making moment for the ISA, with the first time a surfer from the United Arab Emirates, to compete at an ISA World Championship. The Dubai native, Mohammad Rahma, learned to surf just a few years ago at the Wadi Adventures Wave Pool in Abu Dhabi. Rahma got injured playing for the Rugby National Team and during his rehabilitation process, would run on the beach where he first encountered surfers. He decided to give it a try and fell in love with the sport.
South Africa´s Michael February achieved the highest total heat score of the day in a very close heat against Argentina’s Leandro “Lele” Usuna. February sealed the victory in his first two waves with a 7.00 and 9.13, for a total of 16.13, followed by Usuna’s 7.83 and 6.50, for a total of 14.33. “I’m really happy, I had a very good heat. Yesterday was a bit slow, but I could put a good heat together today,” said a relieved Michael February. “The waves are really fun, I just want to surf as best as I can and aim to get some good scores. My highest wave was a very good and long wall. There are not many like that, so I’m happy to get that one and get a good score. Tomorrow I want to be on the beach supporting everyone on my team and I hope that everyone goes well.”
Another notable performer was Argentina’s Santiago Muniz, who dominated his heat earing a 15.50 score, and is looking to reclaim the Gold Medal he won at the 2011 ISA World Surfing Games.

As predicted by Surfline, the official forecaster of the event, the surf ranged from 6-8ft faces with occasional larger sets throughout the day. The winds remained calm and conditions were clean. All the athletes and local fans had their eyes fixed on the line-up awaiting the next set.
With the size and power of the waves, the surfers were able to execute a variety of maneuvers and demonstrate strong power surfing with critical turns.

“Finally the first day of competition has arrived! Yesterday we had an incredible Opening Ceremony in downtown Lima, and it was amazing. Day 1 of the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games featured 18 heats of Open Men’s Main Event Round 1.
Peruvian surfing star, Cristobal De Col, 2011 ISA World Junior Champion, felt right at home in the big waves at Punta Rocas, and was the top performer of the day. De Col earned a 15.90 total heat, the highest of the day. The Peruvian defeated New Zealand’s Tane Wallis (11.00) and Uruguay’s Segundo Vargas (7.60).
“I had a bad start of my heat because in the first wave my board broke so I had to paddle in to change it. Amazingly, the wave that I surfed to get out, I got a 9. After, with a new board I got a 6.90. The wave is incredible; you just have to know the right place to position yourself. You can surf a lot of good waves and do a lot of maneuvers, but a mistake can take a lot of time.”

“I’m very happy to be part of the team this year, we are very united and I think that this is going to be the key for this event. I like to compete in ISA events, especially this one that is being held at my home and celebrating the ISA’s 50 years.”
