NYORA RACEWAY IS READY TO GET DOWN & DIRTY THIS SATURDAY NIGHT.
By Brett Swanson (Pirate Media)
After a huge effort from members of the Nyora Speedway Club, the track will kick off its new season this Saturday night (29th November) with added illumination from the new additional infield lights.
The extra lighting is exactly what is needed to shine the light on the sideways speedway action that is sure to emanate from the tight Gippsland bullring.
Wingless Sprints will be the headlining class ahead of their Victorian Championship to be held here later in the season and appropriately Kelvin Toogood will get to be the first car to circulate the track under the new lights after being the project manager for the upgrade and spending a huge amount of time recently to ensure the job was completed on time and correctly.
Nyora’s favourite daughter Ebony Hobson will be in action in Peter Temby’s V89, and will take on the likes of Kevin Reeves, Brett Neylan, Wayne Hurford, Wayne Milburn Jnr and a host of others.
The Geoff Moule Memorial for Mini Sprints will also be hotly contested with Kevin “Bomber” Bomford, leading the charge from Dave May, Owen Bulman, and Matt Parson who is desperate to win the event. A swathe of rookies will add to the excitement including Luke Hickson, Kyle Stathopoulos, Chris Sheaf and Will Van Der Ark.
In sedan action the Open Sedans will be headed by track favourite Simon Bent and his daughter Shona. Veterans Ray Gould and Eric Miles will continue to cut more laps at their home track while Rob Bushell, Steven Attewell, Andrew Suckling, Daniel Angus, Marcus Reddecliffe and co will add to the attraction.
Limited Sportsman and the skid kids will also be in action in both VSC and 1200cc SSA Sedans and always put on great racing.
Nyora Raceway would like to publicly thank everyone who helped with the lighting and track improvements over the off season and in particular wish to thank the afore mentioned Kelvin Toogood, as well as Nick Hance, Ash Rowlands, Daniel Wanders, Lloyd Hobson, Eric Miles, Peter Temby and all the others too numerous to mention. Thanks everyone for a job well done.
Dale Mead will also have his Lightning McMead’s Joy Rides For Kids In Need Commodore on display ahead of the first lucky passenger getting the thrill ride on December 27th.
With all that on offer, I can’t think of any reason why you shouldn’t make your way to Grundy Avenue, Nyora, this Saturday night for some sensational speedway action.
*To Be Confirmed - Nyora Raceway is currently in negotiations with the Sprintcar Racing Association to have a select group of 410 Sprintcar drivers contest an invitation only event after the conclusion of the regular season.

Lightning McMead’s Joy Rides For Kids In Need.
Media Release 23 November 2014
By Brett Swanson (Pirate Media)
Since painting his Commodore Speedway Sedan in the colours of Disney Pixar’s Lightning McQueen from the movie “Cars”, Rosebud Businessman Dale Mead has experienced firsthand how strong the character was in attracting the attention of young fans.
Painted by his crash repair business, RADAR –Rosebud And District Accident Repairs, the car has always looked first class whenever it hit the speedway tracks primarily at Gippsland’s Nyora Raceway.
But then one night last season a chance meeting with a young fan has changed the course of Dale’s racing career.
“It was after a race meeting and a woman and her grandson came down to look at the car and I asked would he like to sit in the car, which of course he did,” explained Dale. “I went to lift him up into the car and I said, gee he’s very light, and his Grandmother said he had terminal cancer, and that was why he was so light. I felt really bad for what I’d said and for the child but it got me thinking that there would be many others out there similar to him and that there was something that I could do to bring a little bit of happiness to these kids in need.”
As a result Dale has created Lightning McMead’s Joy Rides For Kids In Need.
Dale has decided that on any given race night, during interval, he will give a child in need the opportunity to strap into the passenger seat of his 600 horsepower speedway sedan and go as fast or slow as they want and hopefully give them a joyful escape from their day to day concerns.
“I don’t care if they want to go fast or slow or just get their picture taken in the car,” stated Dale. “So long as they enjoy it and leave with a smile on their faces, I’ll be happy too.”
Already some great people have had an input with Warrick Taylor from Taylor’d Fabrications building and installing the seat and the safety aspects of the car for the cars precious cargo.
K1 Race Gear have come forward with a range of fully embroidered race suits so the kids will look the part and Darren’s Mufflers has also chipped in with some exhaust work.
Tim Law is currently constructing a website and will also be part of the hands on team.
Initially the plans are to conduct the rides at Nyora but the car will also be seen at Redline Raceway in Ballarat and possibly other venues.
Lightning McMead will be on display next weekend, November 29th, at the opening show of Nyora Raceway, with the first ride scheduled for the same venue on December 27th.
Parents, friends or carers who think their special need or disadvantaged child would like to experience some laps in Lightning McMead can contact Dale via the facebook page “Lightning McMead’s Joy Rides for Kids In Need”
Dale is so excited by this prospect that he is already planning on an expansion to a two car team with a blue “Sally” version to be run alongside Lightning.
The car has already been a big hit at a number of area schools and Dale looks forward to continuing that aspect also.

THE “NEW” LIGHT SHINES ON NYORA RACEWAY THIS SEASON.
Variety is the spice of life they say and that same philosophy applies to our speedway life as Nyora Raceway gears up for a cracker-jack new season featuring a couple of staples and a host of varied classes including Sprintcars, V8 Dirt Modifieds, Wingless Sprints, Open Sedans, Standard Saloons and a bunch of opportunities for the young kids to have a skid under the newly augmented track lights.
The new season will kick-off on November 29 with Wingless Sprints the headline act where a large field is expected as an opportunity to test out the track ahead of the all-important Victorian Championship scheduled for later in the season. Mini Sprints will also be in action as a warm up to their state title coming up soon. Open Sedans, Standard Saloons and VSC and 1200cc Juniors will keep the tin top fans happy as well and then to top it off will be the return of Limited Sportsmans, a division that has not run at this venue for many years.
The second meeting on December 27 is the season’s horsepower highlight with the raucous All Star Sprintcars and the big banger V8 Dirt Modifieds contesting the now annual “grand in the hand”. This double feature event will also have support events from VSC Sedans and the 1200cc Juniors.
After a break for the January national events, the gates swing open again on February 7th where the Mini Sprints will contest their Victorian Championship. The mighty Midgets or Speedcars will be back in bigger numbers for the Aussie Jay’s Campers Southern Speedcar Tour, and the Wingless guys and girls will get one more hit out in the now traditional 3rd round of the Victory Lane Racegear Gippsland Challenge. The Miles Cup for Standard Saloons will also add some great sedan excitement.
Three weeks later on February 21st the action continues with the V8 Dirt Modifieds and the demolition derby antics of the Crash ‘N’ Bash brigade. VSC Sedans will provide some additional top level sedan speedway.
March 14th will be the return of the Division II Hot Rods for the prestigious Dave Maslen Memorial. Compact Speedcars will also make their one and only Nyora appearance. Mini Sprints are again in action and the VSC Sedan Super Series will hit town as will the Vintage Speedway machines.
The final night show will be March 28th with the Total Auto Pakenham Victorian Wingless Sprint Championship. Over 50 Wingless Sprints are expected and on the tight confines of Nyora the racing is sure to be frenetic and spectacular. With that many competitors there will not be much room in the house for much else except the Standard Saloons.
The first of a triumvirate of Sunday meetings will be April 19 with the Nyora Sprintcar Invitational*, Mini Sprints for the prestigious Geoff Moule Memorial, VSC Sedans, both VSC and 1200cc Juniors and the Vintage machinery.
May 24th will be a great day of racing with the Wingless Sprints doing double duty. The ladies will have their own event as they contest the final round of the Intercity Signs Ladies of the Dirt Challenge series. The blokes will also get a run as will the Open Sedans, Standard Saloons, VSC & 1200cc Juniors and the nostalgic Vintage selection.
The final meeting is the annual Bob Hickson Memorial - Southern 2000 for Open Independent Sedans on June 28th. Anything from V8 powered Late Models and Super Sedans to 4 cylinder 1200cc junior spec cars will compete side by side with Standard Saloons, Street Stocks, VSC Sedans and anything else in between in one huge season ending sedan spectacular. The ladies will also get their own sedan races as will the VSC and 1200cc juniors in a big season finale.
VSC Sprintcars are also likely to appear at some time during the season but are yet to be confirmed.
With lots of home track hero’s and a sensational spread of speedway classes, this season promises to be one of the best ever in the long and illustrious history of the Nyora Raceway. Don’t miss any of it!

Bad weather sinks Nyora’s Sunday season send-off.
By Brett Swanson (Pirate Media)
The season ending Southern 2000 Super Star Sedan show-down scheduled for tomorrow Sunday 29th June has been cancelled due to constant rain and predictions of more on race day.
“We were really looking forward to a big season finale, and despite the ordinary weather we were still going to give it a big crack if the rain eased,” stated race director Dave Rowlands. Unfortunately by early evening Rowlands was forced to concede that the event just wouldn’t happen. “The call has just come in from the track that it has continued raining for the past couple of hours and there is more on the way so we have reluctantly had to call the meeting off.
While there will be no more racing at the venue this season there is still one event on the schedule that will occur regardless of the weather and that of course is the annual presentation dinner.
The gala event is slated for Saturday night 9th August at the Tooradin Sports Club, in Tooradin from 7:00pm. Adult tickets are $45 per head and can be obtained from Debbie Hickson on 0429 847 888.
Nyora raceway would like to take the opportunity to thank all the competitors, sponsors, officials, club members, volunteers and especially the fans who contributed to the 2013/14 season and look forward to another great season kicking off just a few short months away.

Big $$$ Southern 2000 Sedans to end Nyora Season on Sunday.
A field of nearly 3 dozen sedan speedsters will hit Nyora Raceway this Sunday, June 29, for the season ending Southern 2000 (Bob Hickson Memorial) for Open Sedans.
Already feature winners this season in the Open Sedan division, Nyora racers Simon Bent and Dale Mead and other local combatants Darren O’Brien, Ash England and Andrew Suckling will take on the likes of brothers Shane & Chris Stewart, Stephen Laidlaw, Wayne Ramsdale, Brad Warren and the Nelson duo of Matt and Uncle Darren.
With a field that includes Street Stocks, Standard Saloons and other Open Sedans and hardly a V8 beast in sight, the race is shaping up as one of the most open season ending all-in events for some time.
As additional “Family” entertainment both the women and the kids will get their own events with a handy field of fast females including Sonia Nelson, Sammi Mowat, Sharon Morrison and company battling it out for the always stylish sash.
The skid kids will compete in two categories being the 1200cc sedans, and the Standard Saloon Juniors.
The 1200cc Juniors will see the return of the speedy Seth Bent and Brock Atkins and fierce competition from Shona Bent, Jack Van Bremen, Todd Atkins, Josh Stewart , Thomas Burton, Ayden Bellman, Jamie Burton and Ricky Cornwall.
AJ Lawrence who won the last feature here for the Standard Saloon Juniors will be looking for back to back wins but again will need to contend with nemesis Tyson Cull and Michael Suckling. Also adding to the flavour will be Bailey Perkins, Ally Morrison, Ty Hutton, Donald “Dominator” Young and Jason Mowat.
All up, weather permitting, this promises to be a great final day of speedway racing for the Nyora club to close out the 2013/14 season. Make sure you don’t miss any of the action.

Sunday was speedway fun day @ Nyora.
By Brett Swanson (Pirate Media)
Russell Hill (Standard Saloons Zone Championship) and an emotional Andrew Galley (Division II Hot Rods - Dave Maslen Memorial) were the big winners at the end of a great days racing at Nyora Raceway today (18 May). Also in the winners’ circle were Dale Hallett (Open Sedans) Shona Bent (1200cc juniors), Kevin Bomford (Mini Sprints) and AJ Lawrence (VSC Juniors).
A big field of Standard Saloons were on hand for the Gippsland Zone Championship and the class provided sensational, close racing throughout the day. Even in the final the result was still unknown as they headed into the final turn where a slight error by the challenging Shane Stewart allowed Russell Hill (Ramsdale Wreckers/Casey Accident Repair #DS76) to maintain his race long lead with his nephew Bradley Hill completing the podium back in third place. Behind them came a huge multi car battle for the remaining positions that saw Aaron Price just get the nod ahead of Scott Roberts, Andrew Miles, Rob Bushell, and Colin Cull.
A competitive 6 heats had earlier been won by Russell Hill x 3, Stewart, Dale Morrison and Craig Templeton.
The Dave Maslen Memorial means a lot to both the Division II Hot Rod drivers and also the Nyora Speedway Club and it was obvious from the tremor in his voice on the presentation dais that it meant everything to Andrew Galley (Casey Automotive #N15 – pictured above) to win the event after leading from go to whoa. Rick Mills and Scott Laidlaw however were relentless in their pursuit and the pressure applied to Galley and were worthy podium finishers after some very hard and at times bruising and controversial heat races. Behind the top trio came Broderick Stray, Daniel Angus and Paul D’Arcy.
Heat race wins had been shared around between Mills and Galley x2 with Laidlaw narrowly missing out on a couple of occasions.
The other big boy sedan class was the Open Sedans where Dale Hallett (Ripper Sticker #RD15) proved too strong downing the normally unbeatable Simon Bent with Justin Paull third. Russell Hill had jumped into his Monaro for this category and came home 4th ahead of Mick Evans, Andrew Suckling and Darren O’Brien.
Hallett had served notice by winning the open heat before Bent exacted revenge in heat 2. Paull was the final heat victor.
Kevin Bomford (Elite Metals/Maroondah Auto Elec #32) was fortunate that he had established a big lead in the Mini Sprint final as the car overheated in the closing laps and the computer kicked in to slow the thing down meaning he took the chequered flag at less than full speed. Dave “I’ll race anything” May was second driving Peter Schnoors machine while Darren Schnoor completed the podium ahead of rookie Jim Evans with Jack Day next.
Bomford was the dominator winning all three of the preliminary heats.
The younger boys and girls had two divisions to battle within those being the Standard Saloons and the 1200cc Juniors.
In the Standard Saloon category it was AJ Lawrence (Bob Jane T-Marts #RD55) who took the spoils from Tyson Cull, Michael Suckling and Bailey Perkins.
In the earlier heats Lawrence x 2 and Ally Morrison had taken the wins.
In the 1200cc division it was Shona Bent (Ramsdale Wreckers #N0) who dominated taking the final and all of the heat wins. Jack Ramsdale pulled a last turn pass to grab second from Josh Stewart.
Also on the program were some vintage Sprintcars including the superb Sammy Swindell TMS Challenger replica of Larry Fitzpatrick and the cars of Bob and Rob Noonan.
The next and final event of the Nyora season is the now traditional Southern 2000 Bob Hickson Memorial for Open Sedans with Ladies and Juniors also programmed for Sunday June 29.

Media Release 12 May 2014
Sunday’s speedway day @ Nyora.
By Brett Swanson (Pirate Media)
As the current speedway season speeds towards its fast paced conclusion, Nyora raceway comes back to life this Sunday (18 May) with the clubs’ penultimate meeting which incorporates a number of high profile events including Gippsland Zone Championships for Standard Saloons and Limited Sportsman’s and the prestigious Dave Maslen Memorial for Division 2 Hot Rods.
Also in action will be the Victorian Mini Sprints, VSC Open Sedans and Junior racers in both Standard Saloons and 1200cc sedan variants.
The Stewart boys Shane and Chris will be headliners in a big field of quality Standard Saloons that include former State Champions Colin Cull and Dale Morrison along with tuff performers Leigh Gooding, John Watson, Mark and Andrew Miles, Russell Hill, and local members Andrew Suckling and Ash England.
In the Division II Hot Rods fierce competition is anticipated from the likes of Andrew Galley, Scott Laidlaw (pictured below), Toby Callanan, Rob Tatterson, Broderick Stray and Rick Mills to name a few.
In the Open Sedans it will be “Super” Simon Bent that will have to repel the efforts of fellow club members “Mighty’ Mick Evans, “Racing” Ray Gould and Dale “Lightning” Mead. Interlopers “Dashing” Dale Hallett and Justin Paull will also be very stout with Paull landing in Nyora’s victory lane earlier this season. Bruce Bullard and Andrew Suckling will also be pushing their Standard Saloons to do double duty as open sedans maximising their quota of speedway thrills.
In addition the young guns will impress and amaze with their speed and ability in two junior categories those being Standard Saloons and 1200cc Sedans.
Sons of guns Michael Suckling, Tyson Cull, Donald Young, A J Lawrence and Bailey Perkins will tackle Ally Morrison in the Standards while Jack Van Bremen, Jack Ramsdale and Josh Stewart will be up against the girl power of speed queen Shona Bent and pocket rocket Zoe Young in the 1200cc junior sedans.
Coming off the back of their Victorian championship last weekend the numbers are down a bit in the Mini Sprint nominations but Kevin Bomford, Dean Parsons, Darren Schnoor, Jack Day and Chris Milton will be in the thick of things as will rookies Jim Evans and Dean Beanson.
Throw in another Gippsland Zone Title for the Limited Sportsman’s and you’ve got a great days racing commencing at 11:00am on Sunday 18th May.

Big Field of Wingless Sprintcars @ Nyora this Saturday.
Brett Swanson-Pirate Media
Possibly the largest and strongest field of Wingless Sprintcars ever to grace Nyora Raceway will be the headline attraction at the Gippsland venue this Saturday night, March 15th.
Over 2 dozen cars will be on hand to contest the opening round of the Victory Lane Racegear Gippsland Challenge and the exciting part is the names amongst the entrants which include the likes of former 410 Sprintcar racer Brad Warren and former Allstar Sprintcars Series Champion Brad Foster. Throw in regular hard chargers and veterans such as Brett Neylan, Troy Small, Nyora winner Dayn Bentvelzen, Luke Cole, local aces Wayne Hurford (pictured below leading) and Ebony Hobson and the legendary Peter Logue to mention a few and you have a stellar field with no clear favourite in sight.
Also on the bill will be the Open Sedans which counts among its list of competitors track heroes Simon Bent and Dale Mead, as well as early season feature winner Jamie Paull. Nyora gassers Ash England, Andrew Suckling and Darren O’Brien will be part of the mix while Goulbourn Valleys Josh Brown will be back after clocking up plenty of miles recently at various tracks.
The SDAV Hot Rods will provide plenty of noise and action with their bellowing V8’s where the season long battle between veteran Allan Luckett and Dean West will continue. Shannon Meakins will have something to say about that having scored a win already this season and taking this event out last season.
The mighty little skid kids in their 1200cc Junior Sedans will also be part of the action headed by Jack Van Bremen, Shona Bent, Caleb Lincoln and Wayne Furmston. These 10 to 16 year olds drive well beyond their tender years and often put their grown-up counterparts to shame with their clean, exciting racing.

Media Release February 2014
Bent’s back & Ferguson takes memorial double @ Nyora.
Simon Bent was back like he’d never been away, pushing his Falcon to victory lane over a stellar field of Open Sedans while Stuart Ferguson took a unique back to back win in the prestigious Geoff Moule Memorial for Mini-Sprints last night at Nyora Raceway (Feb 22nd). Also on the winners list was Brendan Miller (Crash ‘n’ Bash) and Donald Young (Junior Sedans).
On a cool night a large and appreciative crowd witnessed some brilliant racing and occasional crash action from a jam packed pit of racers.
Sharing equal top billing on the night was the Total Autos Pakenham Open Sedan Challenge and the Victory Lane Racegear Geoff Moule Memorial.
The biggest field of Open sedans seen for some time from near and far assembled for a series of heats that were won by Damien Miller, Jay Nicolaisen (2 wins), and Simon Bent.
In the feature race, Bent, who’d parked his racecar for the past couple of seasons so he could concentrate on his children’s efforts, launched off the outside of the front row and was never headed despite huge pressure from Miller behind him who was relentless in his pursuit. Both these drivers have a very spectacular driving style and kept the crowd entertained throughout the race.
Bent had a narrow escape when he became entangled with a back marker and spun to the infield. Luckily officials deemed the slower car had caused the prang and so Bent was restarted still at the head of the field and made the most of his reprieve.
Following the lead pair of Bent and Miller across the line was Josh Brown after a tense multi car battle with Nicolaisen (4th), Dale Hallett and Wayne Gilsenan who both failed to finish elevating Jaedn Alberni to a top five finish.
The mighty Mini-Sprints also had their biggest field for some time and while Stuart Ferguson was forced to will an ailing car to the win last year, this year there was no such issues as he dominated from the drop of the green to take back to back wins in this most sought after event. Matt Parsons was again on the podium after throwing out a mid race challenge in lapped traffic while Luke Ferguson driving last year’s winning car completed the podium. Kevin Bomford and Wayne Hurford completed the top five after a race long battle while pre-race equal favourite Owen Milton was the race’s first retirement.
“Two in a row is fantastic. This really means a lot.” Stated Ferguson fresh from the win.
Heat wins were scored by Stuart Ferguson and Milton who took three wins.
The Crash ‘n’ Bash boys and girls were out to entertain and did exactly that as Brendan Miller took the main event win from Lenny “Two Wheels” Bonnici and Allen Treble.
Earlier in the night Miller had been deliberately driven up into the wall by a back marker within sight of the chequered flag and David Parker had turned turtle in his Falcon.
Heat wins had fallen the way of Miller, Treble (x 2), Gavan Dorian, Goose Young and Bonnici.
The Junior sedans completed the speedway action where Donald Young took back to back features this time ahead of Shona Bent and Nyora newcomer Wayne Furmston.
Young and Bent shared the heat wins.
Next event at Nyora will be March 15th with more Open Sedan action, a big field of Wingless Sprints, the thundering SDAV Hot Rods and of course the Junior Sedans.

Moule Memorial & Crash ‘n’ Bash @ Nyora.
By Brett Swanson (Pirate Media)
This Saturday night (22nd) will go down as one of the best meetings of the speedway season with action aplenty assured from the assembled classes with the main event being the prestigious Geoff Moule Memorial for Mini-Sprints.
As if that’s not enough the sedan action will be out of this world as the no holds barred Crash ‘n’ Bash brigade do as their name implies supported by a huge field of VSC Open Sedans courtesy of Mornington Motors.
Additionally the junior sedans will be back again including both Zoe Young and Seth Bent who endured the seasons most incredible smash unscathed.
Defending Geoff Moule memorial winner Stuart Ferguson will be leading the pack of high-strung Mini-Sprints (pictured below) with Owen Milton looking for some redemption after being denied by the smallest of margins last year. Milton is never one to leave anything on the table and absolutely wrings the neck of his tortured machinery and is clearly race fit having spent time in the formula 500 ranks as well this season. Kevin Bomford, Danny Milton, Matt Parsons and Darren & Peter Schnoor amongst others will also add lustre to the event with Dave May stepping into a Mini-Sprint for the first time. May has driven AMCA Nationals, V8 Dirt Modifieds and Speedcars of recent seasons and will quickly adapt.
Over recent weeks Marcus Reddecliffe has been working feverishly to entice a big quality field of VSC Open Sedans to do battle and has succeeded. The mixed bag of open sedans will be sensational around the tight quarter mile oval. Local favourite Simon Bent will be back behind the wheel after a break and will have to contend with the equally spectacular Damian Miller. Dale Meade will have to work hard to score back to back features while Brad Warren steps back from his stalled Sprintcar career to take on the likes of Jamie Paull who won here earlier this season.
The Crash ‘n’ bash boys will make their annual visit to the premier Gippsland venue and will bring with them their own unique style of speedway slam-dunkery. Goose Young, Brendan Miller, Allan Treble, will be in the thick of the action while Damien Miller will be looking to go back to back having taken the win last time the division raced here.
Standard saloons and 1200cc juniors will complete the picture that paints an exciting night of speedway action.
