Club owner dreams of bringing €20m Aston Villa star back to home country

Philippe Coutinho looks set to return to Brazil this summer as the midfielder has no future at Aston Villa under Unai Emery.

The Birmingham club brought the former Liverpool star to Villa Park in 2022 as part of a €20m deal with Barcelona but following the arrival of Emery, the 31-year-old has not been a key figure at the Premier League club.

Coutinho spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan with Qatari outfit Al Duhail, where he played 21 games, scoring six goals alongside three assists. That deal is unlikely to be turned into a permanent move as clubs in Brazil seek to bring the Villa star back to his home country.

Vasco da Gama’s president, Pedrinho, admitted that talks were underway last week to try and sign Coutinho. While the Brazilian club’s new head coach Alvaro Pacheco could not hide his excitement when talking about the arrival of the former Liverpool man.

“We’ve been talking about a lot of things, but all of this is changing quickly. Philippe Coutinho’s trajectory and CV speak for themselves,” Pacheco told O Dia.

“He’s a super experienced player, with a fantastic career. If he comes, he’ll be very welcome by everyone.”

Vasco da Gama will not have a free run at Coutinho as Cruzeiro owner Pedro Lourenco has also confirmed his interest in the  Aston Villa star.

“A big dream is Coutinho, for example,” Lourenco has told Globo Esporte. “We have a big dream to bring that kind of player.

“Coutinho is truly a dream. And, if we have to bring him, we will spare no effort.”

Villa would have been worried about trying to move Coutinho on but it seems that his name still holds some weight in his home country. This would be a good move for the 31-year-old having not played in Brazil since leaving Vasco in 2010.

Man City vs Man United confirmed team news: Casemiro dropped for FA Cup final

25/05/2024, England, Multi Sports, English Sports Publications, Article # 31784199

Man City and Man United go head-to-head in a repeat of last year’s FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday afternoon with both heading into the match with different objectives.

Pep Guardiola’s men became the first team in English football history to win four league titles in a row last weekend and at Wembley on Saturday, this legendary City squad will be hoping to become the first team ever to win back-to-back doubles.

The Premier League champions arrive into the clash as heavy favourites and won the 2023 FA Cup final against Man United with a 2-1 scoreline.

This season, the pressure is less on Guardiola’s men as the Manchester club are not seeking to win a treble and the cup final result will not have an impact on a Champions League final like it could have last term.

Man City were 3-1 winners over West Ham last time out and Guardiola has made three changes from that team for the FA Cup final with Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias and Jeremy Doku being replaced by John Stones, Nathan Ake and Mateo Kovacic.

Man City confirmed starting 11

As for Man United, Erik ten Hag’s side arrive at Wembley hoping to save their season by winning the FA Cup as the rest of their campaign has been a disaster. The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League and should they fail to beat Man City at Wembley, the Red Devils will not play European football next season.

United are big underdogs for the FA Cup final and their preparations may also have been affected after it was reported on Friday that Ten Hag will be relieved of his duties after Saturday’s game.

Man United were 2-0 winners over Brighton last weekend and the Dutch coach has made two changes to what potentially is his last-ever team.

Casemiro and Amad Diallo have been left out with Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford coming in for the Wembley showpiece.

Wayne Rooney appointed as Plymouth Argyle manager

Wayne Rooney appointed as Plymouth Argyle manager

25/05/2024, England, Multi Sports, English Sports Publications, Article # 31784200

Wayne Rooney has been officially appointed as manager of Championship club Plymouth Argyle as he returns after a short spell away from football.

The Manchester United legend is back in management just five months after he was sacked by Birmingham City at the start of the year.

Rooney was unable to turn things around at the Blues, winning just two out of his 15 games at the club with his former side being relegated from the Championship after finishing in 22nd place.

The 38-year-old has now been appointed as Plymouth Argyle manager who were able to narrowly avoid relegation at the end of the season, with just one point separating them from Birmingham City.

Speaking after his appointment, Rooney stated that this was the ‘perfect next step’ and praised the club.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.” He said via the BBC.

“The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place.”
