MODIFIED SEDAN OUTLAWS IN TOWN TO TAKE NED KELLY CUP
Wangaratta City Speedway is in action for the last time this Saturday night when they host the
Modified Sedans who come into town from Bendigo, Ballarat, Melbourne and the North East &
Riverina to try to lay claim to the second annual 'Ned Kelly Cup' along with other feature events
including the Wangaratta Cup for Grand Prix Midgets & the big Smash Em' Crash Em' and Stack Em'
Demolition Derby!
Corowa driver Trevor Mills will be a big favourite with the bookies going into the event however Zac
Swanson following up a great result at Mildura in March, Graham West in a LJ Torana plus other
locals Alex Cheney from Wagga & Jacob Mills of Corowa will look to keep Trevor Mills busy on
Saturday night in the main race.
The Wangaratta Cup for Grand Prix Midgets has attracted the top three from the recent Australian
title Paul Perry, Trevor Perry & Lisa Chalcraft however going into the event as favourites given their
battles at Wangaratta this season so far must be Victorian champion Jason Crawford and Travis
Florimell. The fast little pocket rockets are popular at Wangaratta especially with a number of cars as
potential winners.
Fans love crashing and if there isn’t enough during the racing program, they will get a fix of
destruction at the end of the show when the Demolition Derby takes centre stage. Competitors from
Wagga, Wangaratta, Kyabram and Melbourne are amongst the field, the action will continue until
just one car remains moving & they will take the money for winning the Demolition Derby.
Supporting the main events are Sports Sedans, Standard Saloons, Ladies Sedans & Junior Sedans
with all our local heroes.
Gates to enter will swing open at 1pm for fans with racing from 4pm & enquiries can be made to
0427 308 976. The venue operates with a licensed bar & as such BYO is strictly forbidden.
Entry for the event will cost fans the following: Adults $20, accept for club members and
aged/disabled who pay $15 & $10 for teenagers and young adults between 12 & 18 whilst under the
age of 12 will be free entry.

ANOTHER VICTORIAN TITLE TO BE DECIDED AT WANGARATTA SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAY
Wangaratta Speedway serves up the third of its Victorian title showdowns this
Saturday night when the Goulburn Ovens Sedan Association has its annual
premium event bringing its drivers mostly from New South Wales across the
border and down the road to determine on track who will become Victorian
champion, another major event on the same program is the final round for the
prestigious Sports Sedan Darren Levy Memorial with both Craig Cottier &
Aaron Bunton at the top of the points table vying for the win.
Drivers competing in the Victorian title for the Goulburn Ovens Sedan
Association include Clint Henderson who won both the last two race meetings,
Ross Maclean who won early this season, Trevor Mills who picked up a couple
wins after Christmas & Thomas Bowers who won at Wangaratta on the only
visit to the track so far this season.
Chelsea Cornelius flying in from Brisbane, Ross Richardson with a long drive
from Cobar, Nathan Shortis & Dave Walton are other drivers who could feature
in the top three whilst anything can happen and we might just see a ‘Bradbury’
moment on title night.
Albury racer Craig Cottier would dearly love to win the Darren Levy Memorial
given the event honours a family member, however his 350ci Commodore has
had difficulty keeping up with Aaron Bunton from Nagambie and his Modified
250 Crossflow powered Falcon.
Both drivers will be going hammer and tong to come out on top of this series
with heat race finishes as vital as the final race itself with points up for grabs
on every race. The Powell brothers & Rhys Collins last season’s dominant
Sports Sedan driver will all make things interesting as they look for their own
win on the night to take a round win.
Supporting divisions include the Ladies Open Sedans, Junior Sedans, Vintage
Humpy Holden’s & Standard Saloons.
Gates to enter will swing open at 1pm for fans with racing from 4pm &
enquiries can be made to 0427 308 976. The venue operates with a licensed

Entry for the event will cost fans the following: Adults $20, accept for club

MILLER & RANDALL WIN BIG AT WANGARATTA
Wangaratta City Speedway played host to a very strong field of Sports Sedans & a talented field of
Standard Saloons for this season's running of the Sports Sedan Victorian title & 2016 SuperAxe 1000
respectively with Damien Miller & Ben Randall picking up the big wins in front of a spirited crowd on
March the 19th.
With the Sports Sedans attracting thirty race cars the qualifying was tough as drivers worked hard to
qualify as close to a front row start in the thirty lap final as possible with twenty three starters
ensuring traffic was likely to play a factor & Andrew Jordan from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs
proved to be the top driver through three heat races each from Brendan Miller & eventual winner
his brother Damien with Matthew Ridd all from the Alexandra Speedway club making up the top
four starters.
Amongst drivers who did not finish the gruelling race were Wangaratta members Jimmy Powell &
Rhys Collins with state ranked top drivers Luke Fallon, Daniel Unternahrer & Brendan Miller all failing
to finish also.
Jordan looked very looked like a winner when he headed Damien Miller and it became a story of
what might have been when a caution light came on and set the field off for a green, white chequer
finish with Miller getting by Jordan, Jordan returning fire before running wide & allowing Miller to
take the lead back & win the race becoming Victorian champion with Nagambie's Aaron Bunton
finishing third ahead of Trevor Mills & Matt Ridd.
Heat wins in the Sports Sedans went to Bunton, Jordan, Ridd, Fallon, Martin Heiner, Damien Miller,
Brendan Miller, Mills & Dale Smith giving an extraordinary nine winners from nine heats showing
just how close the field actually was for the evening.
Miller was understandably pumped with his championship victory. "That was an awesome race by &
with Jordan, bad luck & well done to him & the other podium placers. This is going to be an event we
will talk about for weeks, thank you to everybody who helps out our teams racing from family to
crew. It's time now to party long into the night."
The Standard Saloon SuperAxe 1000 blue ribbon feature began with Randall & last year’s winner
Nick Chrystie at the front of the field with Daryl Joosten & Cameron Dike behind them. Randall from
Churchill in Gippsland had earlier made the decision to go home after technical issues played havoc
with his mindset however was talked into staying & racing & that decision paid off big time when the
talented driver went on to win the feature event from his good friend Dike, Russell Hill, Aaron Price
& Chrystie.
For the Standard Saloons Andrew Robl from Killawarra won a heat however due to breakdown took
no further part in the event whilst Joosten, Dike, Randall, Chrystie & Randall once more were the
other winners.
Jason Crawford went on to win the Grand Prix Midget final from Mooroopna's Lisa Chalcraft, Chris
Fowler, Sean Denning & David Bacon & visiting Division 2 Hot Rods were win by Scott Laidlaw from
Broderick Stray & Gary Uprichard & in Junior Sedans Daniel Powell from Beechworth was too strong
for Jake Cottier & Janie Patton.
In April Wangaratta Speedway returns with their third Victorian title of the season this time for the
Goulburn Ovens Sedan Association doing battle for the number one plate.

BIG BAD V8 ENGINES DELIGHT THE CROWD AT WANGARATTA SPEEDWAY
Wangaratta City Speedway had a great crowd on Saturday night & they sat down to enjoy what
arguably many believe are the two most important divisions in Speedway, Sprintcars & Late Models
with Shane Steenholdt & Ben Nicastri coming out on top on February the 20th.
Sprintcars & Late Models were supported by all the club local divisions and drivers along with the
visiting Grand Prix Midgets competing in a state series round with winners being Chris Fitzgerald in
Standard Saloons, Belinda Chalcraft in Ladies, Daniel Powell in Junior Sedans, Liam Powell in Sports
Sedans & Travis Florimell in Grand Prix Midgets.
A twenty five lap Late Model Sedan final known as the ‘Ryan’s Refrigerated Transport’ Battle of the
Border night one was won start to finish by Nicastri who travelled down from Goulburn to compete.
He was chased hard by Chevy Edwards and Cameron Pearson who at times had a close battle going
on between themselves followed by Brock Edwards in fourth the brother of Chevy & Justin Pearson
the father of Cameron in fifth.
Heat racing proved to be intense with Graham Forte winning in the first round along with Nicastri,
then Nicastri & Chevy Edwards in the second round won the races with Mick Hetherington deemed
the cause of a crash that took himself and Forte out of action in this round. Scott McPherson &
Chevy Edwards once more won the last round heats.
Sprintcars ran a twenty lap feature race with all the competitors from Gippsland for this meeting.
Shane Steenholdt came out trumps with Bobby Daly the next best ahead of Adam Greenwood, Dave
Dennison & Mark Laity.
Greenwood began the night well in heat racing with a win before a miss started to plague his cars
performance with the crew busily trying to work out what the issue was. Daly picked up a win in the
second heat with Dave Dennison proving how close the division is being the third winner from three
heats in the last heat race.
Results in the other racing were Liam Powell of Beechworth in Sports Sedans defeating his brother
Jimmy with Daryl Joosten third then Fleur Heiner & Georgette Meunier, Chris Fitzgerald too strong
for Liam Powell, Trevor Goldsworthy, Daniel Joosten & Luke Dinsdale in Standard Saloons and
Florimell ahead of Lisa Chalcraft, Chris Fowler, Sean Denning & David Bacon in the Grand Prix
Midgets.
Wangaratta City Speedway will fire up again on March the 19th with two huge events leading the
program, the Victorian Sports Sedan title & the Super Axe for Standard Saloons expecting to draw
ninety cars between those two divisions alone.

SPRINTCARS & LATE MODEL SEDANS SUPER SHOW AT WANGARATTA SPEEDWAY
The annual Sprintcar & Late Model Sedan Wangaratta Speedway Super Show is back again after last
year’s success & with some extra cash up for grabs the Late Model Sedans have sixteen of their
beasts set to do battle whilst Sprintcars have almost a dozen cars set to fly around Wangaratta City
Speedway.
The Late Model Sedans will be a Victoria v New South Wales v Canberra super fight with Cameron
Pearson already a winner twice this season leading the Victorians the likes of Scott Macpherson from
Canberra, Ben Nicastri from Goulburn way & Bruce Mackenzie from Sydney in the “Ryan’s
Refrigerated Transport Battle of the Border’.
Locally the division is yet to establish our own competitor however there is plenty to cheer for from
either side of the Murray River with the Mexicans v the Cockroaches always starting plenty of
banter.
In Sprintcars Wangaratta was set to have a local racer Jesse Nicholas compete, however he melted
some engine pistons in a shake down at the track two weeks ago and isn’t yet repaired, Shane
Steenholdt, Bobby Daly & Andrew Hughes are three drivers to keep an eye on this Saturday night.
Grand Prix Midgets have another series event and freshly crowned Australian Champion Paul Perry
will try to keep himself ahead of the great Dennis Myers from Shepparton, Jason Crawford, Lisa
Chalcraft Australia # 3 from Mooroopna & Louis Rodriguez.
The local heroes in Sedans will also shine with the Sports Sedan’s last chance for laps before the
Victorian title in March at Wangaratta. Wodonga’s Georgette Meunier is coming off a win last
Saturday night at Wahgunyah & Wangaratta’s Shane Box steps back behind the wheel to have a
steer whilst the Ladies division, Junior Sedans & Standard Saloons round out the program.
Gates to enter will swing open at 1pm for fans with racing from 4pm & enquiries can be made to

EVERY THAT COULD HAPPEN DID AT WANGARATTA SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT
The big Rural City of Wangaratta supported Junior Standard Saloon state title on Saturday night the
6th of February has been run & won whilst positions remain un-official until some investigation in
regards to final positions & technical matters are addressed, as it stands Bairnsdale driver Matt
Bowers is the new Victorian champ with Michael Hardy & Jack Wharton both from Gippsland also
finishing on the podium.
Twenty one Juniors arrived to compete and twenty started the final with local Wangaratta driver
Rick McAuliffe the only unfortunate competitor to miss the start of the final due to clutch failure.
Heat racing was dominated by 13 year old lass Ally Morrison winning two of her three heats to
qualify as the top driver for the Victorian title race. Bowers, Bailey Perkins, Hardy & Rutherglen’s
Jack Milthorpe all won heats before Morrison led the start in the title race from Hardy, Bowers,
Milthorpe, Charli Parsons & Perkins.
In the heats Coby Elliott ripped his car apart on the back straight wall as did Holly Strickland & AJ
Lawrence, the concrete wall causing plenty of headaches for crew members who were put to work
to fix cars.
The title race started with false starts, Gemma Laidlaw being crashed out of the race before an
official lap had been counted and Morrison leading Hardy, Bowers & Millthorpe on a chase in and
out, over and under slower drivers before Morrisons car came unstuck up against the concrete & out
of the race with the cause possibly one of the incidents under conjecture being investigated post-
race after conversations between parents and officials.
Milthorpe was penalised at this point of the race and at the re-start lined up from the back however
on the lead lap.
Further into the race as Bowers and Hardy motored on at the front way ahead of others, another
crash this time involving Elliott & Daniel Powell brought the race to a halt and once again penalty
went to Milthorpe who was again sent to the rear of the field & once again post-race there could be
some conjecture as to what happened here as the drivers had a different story than officials.
At the restart it looked like a couple cars were out of position & at the end of the race this maybe
another situation being looked at whilst Milthorpe stormed his way through the field again as a
result of his second penalty.
Bowers maintained authority out front & he went on to cross the line and pass on track inspection in
relation to his differential being legal with Hardy second, Wharton declared third, Milthorpe &
Courtney Meakins the first five to finish with post-race engine inspections pending & the
investigations pending.
The Sports Sedans were competing in the second of three round in the Darren Levy Memorial Series
with Nagambie driver Aaron Bunton a very strong winner ahead of Andrew Jordan, Liam Powell who
won two heat races earlier to qualify, Craig Cottier & Daniel Unternahrer whilst Wangaratta based
driver Martin Heiner took a big heavy dump upside in his Commodore.
In other racing the Goulburn Ovens Sedan final was won by Wodonga driver Thomas Bowers ahead
of Ross Maclean & Brendan Tracey from Albury returning to form from a few seasons ago with Mark
Gordon & David Walton rounding out the top five. Clint Henderson tore his beautiful VT Commodore
to shreds along the back wall when he found the concrete during heat racing.
In Standard Saloon racing Trevor Evans from Yarrawonga competing in his brother’s car took the win
ahead of Wangaratta locals Chris Fitzgerald & Andrew Robl with Trevor Goldsworthy & Daniel
Joosten completing the top five positions whilst earlier visiting driver Leigh Gooding had a big crash
into the turn three wall.
Compact Speedcar racing was won by Dave May in his first ever meeting with the division. May is an
experienced campaigner in many forms of Speedway & took to this form of the sport instantly
winning two of the three heats then going on to win the feature race from two Shepparton
speedsters Geoff Meyers & Mark Cecil then Rodney Howie & Brad Lowe.
Karen Macaskill won two of the three Ladies races to be the best performed on the night ahead of
Fleur Heiner and Tegan Bullard before her car engine exploded!
The Wangaratta Speedway Club would like to thank the spectators for their patience during what
was a long title race due to situations out of the Club’s control.
Crashes and incidents can happen, the Junior title is a state governing body controlled event & race
incidents that occurred that set the night back in time, the delay in restarting & whilst the decisions
themselves were made, this was were out of our control.
The late finish to the night is no longer a regular occurrence at Wangaratta & the club hope you
return February 20th for the Late Model Sedans & the Sprintcars.

IN SCORCHING WEATHER HESELTINE, COTTIER, MILTHORPE, MEYERS ON FIRE AT SPEEDWAY
Wangaratta Speedway got under way for the post Christmas season in scorching 34 degree heat on
Saturday the 9th of January with a big program of feature events to entertain the dirt track faithful &
local drivers feature amongst the big wins with Lavington NSW based driver Craig Cottier taking an
important ‘Darren Levy Memorial’ Sports Sedan victory & Corowa youngster Jack Milthorpe the
same in ‘North East Rising Star Challenge’ Junior Sedans.
Visiting divisions were the main act with the V8 powered AMCA class being won by Dean Heseltine &
Shepparton’s Geoff Meyers winning the Compact Speedcar ‘Cardwell Cup’ whilst Standard Saloons
victory went to Liam Powell, Gary Kakoschke in Marsh Modified Sedans & Ladies Sedans to Kayla
Knox.
Amca Nationals are popular right across Australia & twenty of Victoria’s hard chargers lined up for
the latest Country Cup round where Dean Heseltine would take victory ahead of ahead of a great
challenge by Bill Lodwick & Northern Territory champion Jamie Collins.
A number of race incidents including unavoidable contact between the race winner and the leader at
the time Zeke Edwards who both had nowhere to deviate too coming out of turn two with a spun
backmarker sitting on track in front of them & a roll over to Sharon Tindal stopped & started the
feature event before the race reached an end with Grant Cullinger finishing fourth & Darren
McCarthy in fifth.
Six heat race victories went to Heseltine, Matt Mills, Allan Cullinger, Zeke Edwards, Heseltine again &
Collins with plenty of heat race spins, enquiry flags & tantrums to keep the steward busy.
Round one of the Darren Levy Memorial series began very well for Craig Cottier a cousin of the late
Darren Levy taking a satisfying win over Nagambie’s Aaron Bunton, Jimmy Powell, Daniel
Unternahrer & Georgette Meunier in the Sports Sedans. Cottier was the red hot favourite going into
the event & secured a front row race start after a win & two seconds in heat racing before heading
off ahead of Corey Knox and the field early in the race never to be headed.
The feature was punctuated by a huge crash with Troy Frost spinning & the car back into traffic
wiping out Tom Barnard & Adam Lovell whilst Russell Smith was able to continue. Cory Knox,
Bunton, Thomas Bowers, Cottier, Bunton & Daniel Unternahrer won heat races heading into the
feature event.
Junior drivers from the North East of Victoria and as far away as Portland & Young in NSW arrived to
do battle at Wangaratta in the first round of a two round mini-series to crown a North East Rising
Star winner.
Milthorpe from border town Corowa was too good in two of the three heats for all challengers
before he blitzed in the feature to defeat Daniel Powell, Coby Elliott, Rick McAuliffe & Jake Cottier in
the round supported by Patton Automotive Wangaratta, Chris Kelly Signs Wodonga & Highline
Racewear & Apparel.
Meyers in the Compact Speedcars wanted to make up for bad luck that ended his run at the recent
Victorian title held at Rushworth Speedway to take a win in the Cardwell Cup & he did so with a
great commanding win over Will Van Der Ark, Keith Astrella, Butch Hutchinson & Gavin Gay.
The most exciting race of the night was the Standard Saloon final where Gary Evans led before
Beechworth racer Liam Powell picked off with one lap to go & head of to victory with Evans, Josh
Delarue, Daniel Joosten & Jack Bear rounding out the top five & Kakoschke was too strong for
challengers in his Marsh Modified Sedan division when he beat Stewart Knight, Timothy Knight,
Justin Bradley & Greg Knight who suffered mechanical gremlins whilst challenging for a win &
limping to the line in fifth.
