The Amazing Ride - a fun day for all the family!

Families across Melbourne are set for an ‘amazing’ day on their bikes, with Cycling Victoria’s ‘Amazing Ride’ event on Sunday March 18, 2018.

A magic day of family cycling fun will offer riders of all ages and abilities the opportunity to explore Melbourne by bike with three different courses, featuring iconic Melbourne locations, hidden gems and playgrounds.

There’s the 1km Baby Chino ride, perfect for the little ones in the family on their balance bikes or with training wheels. The 14km Milkshake ride, a great route for the bigger kids in the family with a stop at the Collingwood Children’s Farm along the way for a milkshake and a chance to pat the farm animals. Then there’s the 32km Latte Lap for the little kid in every big kid, following the Main Yarra Trail along a route perfect for intermediate riders.

With each ride starting and finishing at the historic Hawthorn Velodrome, riders will have the opportunity to complete as many or as few of the routes as they wish over a three hour period.

The Hawthorn Velodrome infield will be buzzing with fun activities to keep riders of all ages entertained, including an array of skill courses, Kiddimoto on the balance bikes, face painting and much more. The friendly crew from Bicycle Centre South Morang will also be on hand to provide free bike safety checks and advice, and Donald & Tuck will be dispensing quality coffee and everyone who enters to ride will be in the running to win a bike and helmet package.

The Amazing Ride is proud to have Very Special Kids as the Charity Partner for the event that will take place Sunday 18th March 2018, 10am-1pm from Hawthorn Velodrome.

Aussie sprinters set to sizzle at the Austral

Australia's best track sprinters are set to light up the boards of Hisense Arena on Saturday December 16.

The 120th Austral Wheelrace Carnival will feature UCI Category 1 Sprint and Keirin events, and Australia's top sprinters are all confirmed starters - namely Matt Glaetzer, Jacob Schmid, Pat Constable, Nathan Hart, Steph Morton, Kaarle McCulloch and Holly Takos.

And they are certainly in fantastic form judging by the outstanding times recorded in Sprint Qualifying at the Oceania Track Championships over the past 24 hours.

Matt Glaetzer recorded a flying 200 metre time of 9.68 seconds, which represents an average speed of 74.4km/hr.

Meanwhile in the women's sprint qualification, Stephanie Morton recorded 10.65 seconds (67.6 km/hr), one of the fastest times ever recorded.

All times and average speeds are listed below:

Rider  200m Qualifying Time       Average Speed
Matt Glaetzer              9.681 secs 74.4 km/hr
Jacob Schmid  9.736 secs 73.9 km/hr
Pat Constable  9.776 secs  73.6 km/hr
Nathan Hart  9.954 secs  72.3 km/hr
Steph Morton  10.654 secs  67.6 km/hr
Kaarle McCulloch  10.908 secs  66.0 km/hr
Holly Takos  11.125 secs  64.7 km/hr

While the Australians are in fine form, they certainly won't have it all their own way.

Keirin World Champion Azizul Awang (Malaysia) is "keen to put on a show in his rainbow jersey", and former Austral winner Zac Williams (New Zealand) is also in fabulous form having just won a third Oceania 'kilo' title in a row.

Rio Olympians Fatehah Mustapa (Malaysia) and Shannon McCurley (Ireland) will also test out the speed and tactical skills of our best female sprinters.

An outstanding program of track cycling will also feature the 120th Austral Wheelrace finals, Australian Madison Championships, and the Austral Legend's Race.

Austral Legend's Race set to light up Hisense Arena

We're delighted to announce that a Legend's Race will take place on the Austral Program at Hisense Arena on Saturday December 16, 2017.

Track cycling royalty will take to the boards - Danny Clark, Brad McGee, Shane Kelly, Scott McGrory, Laurie Venn and Troy Clarke.

The group has won Olympic, World, Commonwealth, Australian and Austral titles aplenty - and they are set to put on a show for the Hisense crowd and to bring back more than a few memories.

There's also sure to be more than a little friendly rivalry between riders, as evidenced by some of the 'secret training' sessions which have been taking place across Australia in recent months.

Shane Kelly is excited to be returning to the track, and catching up with the other riders taking part.

"I've got great memories of racing on the Hisense track, and with the likes of Brad and Danny. Danny was a childhood idol of mine. And I was a mentor for Brad in his younger days. It should be great fun. I'm looking forward to it. And yes, I've certainly done a bit more training recently to get ready for it!"
