The Cycling Victoria State Championships will be played out this weekend in Ballarat. We spoke with Ballarat local and J19 Australian Criterium National Champion, Jesse Norton, about his first year in the J19 category.
The year started on a high, only to be hindered by a collarbone break at the Tour of Gippslands. Hear from Jesse and his coach, Pat Shaw about their goals, and how the Victorian Road Series plays a role in the development of our young cyclists.

VRS Recap! It was your typical Warny weather this past weekend at the Tour of the South West. Flipping back and forth between sunshine and bucketing rain with gusts up to 50km/h, the stage was set.
The elite men's classification was as predicted, with the team vs team battle of @inform_tminsight_make stealing the show. Carter Turnbull eventually proved the victor taking out the GC and stepping onto the podium in every stage.
Sarah Gigante (@roxsoltattaquer)the reigning national champion was in attendance. Holding off both Jenny Pettnon (@gusto_stepfwd_kom) & Nicola McDonald (@sa_sports_institute) in a fierce battle for GC. Sarah showed why she rides in the green and gold bands as she took out the overall standing by 54 seconds.

"By the end of the VJRS season after squashing more and more people into cars I can say that we’ve all gotten a fair bit closer and not just because the cars are getting smaller." -Daniel O'Malley
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when coming into my first tour, but soon realised the great atmosphere, exciting racing and time spent with my friends had me hooked. My best tour placing was second and my worst was last but my consistency got me across the line for the series win. Thank you to everyone who put the series on.” – Logan Taplin

The Geelong Advertiser spoke with 10-year-old Ethan Forwood, who was involved in the Pedal Power pilot program.
"I think it gave him confidence, he doesn't ride a bike at home so it gave him that confidence to try it and he loved it," said Ethan's mother.
The Pedal Power initiative is a project by Leisure Networks, Cycling Victoria and Geelong Cycling Club that offers kids with autism spectrum disorder the opportunity to learn to ride with their families.

Next month, Coburg Cycling Club's Tamaryn Stevens will represent Cycling Australia at her 6th World Transplant Games. Tamaryn spoke with us about life after receiving a kidney transplant and why she loves riding her bike.
“It's a hard reality that we have to live with sometimes, while incredibly effective, transplants are a treatment, not a cure. I've had a few setbacks recently that I don't think I would have been able to bounce back from nearly as well if it hadn't been for my keeping fit prior. The bike is great for my health, both physically and mentally.”

The Sam Miranda Gran Fondo presented by Bike Exchange is back in 2019. Bigger, better and dirtier!
Located in the heart of the King Valley, this event will combine picturesque routes, challenging climbs and quiet roads, creating a truly memorable cycling experience for all levels of cyclists.
Reminiscent of European races like Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix, the Strade Nero is a challenging 5km section of gravel road that rises into the King Valley. At the top of the climb you will descend into the sleepy town of Whitfield before heading back to the beautiful vineyards that is the Sam Miranda Winery. Once the ride is complete, feel free to relax and enjoy your included Mediterranean lunch, followed by a cheeky glass of vino.
In conjunction with the Sam Miranda Tour of King Valley, riders of the Gran Fondo will cycle the exact same route as the NRS professionals and get to see the exciting finish of the races.
Riders of the Gran Fondo will receive:
• Champion Systems event jersey
• Mediterranean lunch
• Event insurance
• Discount wine offers
• Timed event results
• Entry into bike expo
Suitable for road or gravel bikes, the Grand Fondo will test and reward all riders that participate.

Zwifting to you during the Tour de France!
Cycling Victoria invites you to join us for a unique first-of-its-kind virtual cycling challenge – Le Velo Virtuel
Set in two velodromes across Australia on 27 July 2019, this first-of-its-kind experience uses cycling and virtual technology to link participants as they compete against each other from anywhere in the world whilst soaking up the action of a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
In its first year, Le Velo Virtuel will have two Australian locations in velodromes located in Sydney and at our home at DISC. Your team can join from anywhere in the world simply by joining the Zwift event in their gym, home or office. Simply head to our website link below and choose the organisation that you work for to join their team OR create your own team by choosing the location you would like to participate in - Sydney or Melbourne or virtually from anywhere in the world!
Simply click on REGISTER to join or contact us on velo@jdrf.org.au and we will answer any questions you have. https://lnkd.in/exHrBDS
