3x World Champion Mick Fanning Announces His Retirement From The WSL World Tour

Thursday, March 1, 2018 (Sydney, NSW, Australia) –

Late last night, 3x World Champion Mick Fanning announced his retirement from the WSL World Championship Tour. He will surf the first two events of the 2018 season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, and will retire from competitive surfing on the CT after his final heat in the famous Bells Bowl.

“I feel like I’ve just lost the drive to compete day-in day-out now,” says Mick. “It’s been something I’ve been doing for 17 years, and even before that through QS and Juniors, and I feel that I just can’t give it 100 per cent anymore. I’m just not enjoying it as much as I was in the past. I still love surfing, and I’m still super excited by it, but I feel that’s there’s other paths for me to take at this stage in my life.

“As for choosing to retire at Bells, I’ve always had in mind that my last event on Tour was going to be Bells. That’s basically where I started my career, it was my first ever CT win, and I feel really connected down there.”

Over the course of his career Mick has been through more than most of us could imagine. He’s seen both personal triumph and personal tragedy under the scrutiny of the public eye, worked through injuries that would have ended others’ careers, and punched a shark on live television, coming out completely physically unscathed.

Throughout all of that, he has won 3x World Championship Titles, 22x World Tour events, and completed 16 career tours – cementing himself as one of the greatest surfers and sportsmen in history.

“My time on Tour has been a rollercoaster for sure,” says Mick. “You have your peaks and valleys – but you know, when I look back on my time on tour it’s amazing memories - from building myself up to compete, to heat wins and event wins, celebrating with friends and just seeing places I never thought I’d even get to.”

Mick has been a part of Rip Curl for as long as we can remember, and long before he joined the elite World Tour. We’ve been with him through all of the up and all of the downs.

“It’s been a wild and emotional ride on Mick’s pro career for all of us at Rip Curl,” says Neil Ridgway, Rip Curl Chief Brand and Marketing Officer. “He’s been our #1 surfer on Tour for so long that it will be a bit weird when we watch him step off at Bells. We have learned a lot about being partners in the surfing game from being together for so long and I thank him for all that he has done in his three World Titles.

“I have a mountain of respect for him personally, such are the moments that mattered in his career and quite often the very challenging circumstances behind the scenes that he achieved them in. I can dine out on Mick tales for the rest of my life because of that, so ‘Cheers, Mick!’ And we will see you on The Search.”

Congratulations Mick, we couldn’t be more proud of you and everything that you’ve achieved – and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

#CheersMick

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Thursday, October 5, 2017) - Ezekiel Lau(HAW) has claimed the QS10,000 EDP Billabong Pro Cascais title today over Italo Ferreira(BRA) in clean three-to-four foot surf at praia do Guincho, the back-up venue in Cascais.

In the final, both surfers got off to a slow start with medium scores, Ferreira leading the first exchange with a couple of forehand gauges on a clean little left. Lau opted for the forehand as well on a right but couldn’t complete his final maneuver.

Facing tricky conditions, surfers decided to go to the air, and while the Brazilian fell on a few attempts, Lau managed to land a good tail whip for a 5.17 to momentarily take back the lead. He then quickly went back to his signature power carves and lay backs for a 6.67 and a stronger hold on the pole position.

Things heated up on the ten-minute mark with an exciting exchange, Lau with a great full rotation and Ferreira on another clean left and a combination of turns, both scores coming in the 6 point range. Lau kept the advantage with the slimmest of margins heading into the final five minutes of the heat.

As time ran out, Ferreira failed to find the required score and Lau claimed his first QS win since 2013 at the VANS World Cup. With the win in Cascais, the Hawaiian will rise up to the 12th spot on the QS, a great position for him coming into the final qualifying stretch on home turf.

“It’s the first year I even make a heat here so to be in the final is a huge win,” Lau said. “I’m super stoked with everyone supporting me here and everyone back home! It’s been a learning year for me, learning about myself and how I like to compete. I just approached every day like it was a normal surf, just with a jersey on, and I love to compete so I just learned to love every bit of it.”

Ferreira, who sat three Championship Tour events out on injury earlier this season, came back to winning form in Portugal and reached the final for the first time in two years. The talented goofy foot will carry momentum and confidence heading into the next two CT stops in Europe.

“It was a hard three months to sit out due to my injury, so I’m super happy to be back,” Ferreira said. “Congrats to Zeke, he surfed really well and thanks to everyone who came here to support us, the vibe here in Portugal is always awesome. I have a lot of great memories in Portugal with the World Juniors, Peniche and now here so I’m super stoked to come back every time.”

The opening semifinal was a one-way battle that went Ferreira’s direction. While the Brazilian found two great rights to lay down his backhand carves early on, Kanoa Igarashi (USA) struggled to pick the right waves and his scoring potential stayed limited to the average range. In the last five minutes, Igarashi made things interesting with a good wave on his forehand to post the heat’s highest single score and come back in the battle. Unfortunately his last two efforts came up just short of the requirement to turn the heat.

The Californian, adding a massive 6,500 ranking points to his 2017 effort with the equal third place today, put the final nail in his re-qualifying effort to reach nearly 22,000 points.

“I woke up a little bit late and I didn’t feel like I was completely on in my heat,” Igarashi explained. “I was a bit cold and felt like I could have surfed better which I’m a little bummed about but either way I’m stoked with the semifinal result. Re-qualification was the goal coming into this event and I think I’ve achieved that, so I’m going to be able to enjoy the next two events in France and Peniche more, which are two of my favorites in awesome beachbreaks.”

In the second semifinal, local superstar Frederico Morais (PRT) suffered a similar fate and spent the better half of his bout contemplating how Lau found himself of the best waves again and again. Despite Morais’ repeated efforts on smaller waves, he couldn’t overtake the Hawaiian and had to settle for the equal third place.

While double qualification is not on the priority list for World No. 11 Morais, his result in Cascais bumped him up within the Top 15 on the QS with a possible big finish in Hawaii in case he ever needed the Qualifying Series to keep his seat amongst the World’s best in 2018.

“It’s amazing to have everyone here supporting me it feels incredible,” Morais stated. “It was a really tough heat and Zeke surfed really well. It’s clean but not easy to find the right ones, he definitely was on the best waves so congrats Zeke. It’s been an amazing week and now off to France!”

The final two QS10,000 events on the 2017 WSL Men’s Qualifying Series will be the Hawaiian Pro and VANS World Cup in Hawaii from November 12 - December 5.

Nikki Van Dijk Wins The 2017 Cascais Women’s Pro; Claims Her First Ct Win

Praia de Guincho, Portugal (October 4, 2017)  –

In her first WSL CT final ever, Nikki van Dijk has won the 2017 Cascais Women’s Pro, held in chunky three-to-five foot beachies at Praia de Guincho, Portugal.

After a solid performance throughout the marathon event, it came down to a head-to-head 35-minute battle against 3x World Champion Carissa Moore. Nikki came out firing – posting a 6.0 and backing it up with a 4.67 within minutes.

From the get-go Carissa was in a position of chasing scores, and as the clock ticked down, it became apparent that Nikki van Dijk was going to leave Portugal this year with her maiden CT win.

“Oh my gosh, I am jelly legs,” Nikki exclaimed as she ran out of the water, completely out of breath and jittering with excitement. “I don’t know what’s going on, but I am so happy and am so ready to enjoy this moment! It’s crazy… and it’s literally what I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”

Nikki maintained a solid lead throughout the majority of the heat, but when she lost priority with just a few minutes left, Carissa only needing a high two, things got dicey.

“For the most part I was doing my own thing throughout the heat, but when it got really close at the end and Carissa only needed a two, I started paying attention to the situation. It was so hard to hear what was going on out there with the wind – it was a wild and wooly ocean!”

Nikki hails from Phillip Island, a part of the Victorian coastline known for windswept beachbreaks like Woolamai, which Nikki calls her local. You could tell in her surfing throughout the event that she was calling on that knowledge, comfort and skill in similar surf – something that she’s learnt throughout her entire surfing life. As of today, she has become the first surfer from Phillip Island to ever claim a win in a World Tour event.

This momentous win also skyrockets Nikki into fifth place on the WSL Jeep Leaderboard – and looking farther ahead, even into the World Title conversation.

“Yup, I like the feeling of this,” she said, once she caught her breath. “Let’s keep it going!”

Congratulations on your first CT win Nikki. It’s well deserved and the first of many!

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Wednesday, October 4, 2017) - Nikki Van Dijk(AUS) has won the Cascais Women’s Pro, Stop No. 8 on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), to claim her first ever CT event win. Van Dijk battled three-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) in an exciting 35-minute final at the back-up venue of Guincho.

Today’s victory sees Van Dijk become the first surfer from Victoria, Australia to win a CT event since Tony Ray won the the Lacanau Pro in 1992. The twenty two year old will now jump up two places from 7th to 5th on the Jeep Leaderboard, just 350 points behind Sage Erickson (USA) in 4th place.

“I have jelly legs, everything is jelly but I’m just so happy,” Van Dijk said. “It was so close at the end but I think I’ve won! It’s wild and woolly out there. I was scrambling around at the end because I knew Carissa [Moore] only needed a small score so I was wanting to better my score too. Carissa can get 8’s and 9’s in her sleep but it was really hard at the end. I like the feeling of this so let’s keep it going. I’m just going to enjoy this moment. This is literally what I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”

Van defeated big names to reach the final today, including Lakey Peterson (USA) in the Quarterfinals and Jeep Ratings Leader Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) in the Semifinals. Van Dijk has two previous CT Semifinal finishes under her belt (Rio in 2017 and Trestles in 2016) but today mark’s her first appearance in a CT Final.

"It feels amazing, this is insane," said Van Dijk. "I'm living my eight-year-old dream right now and I'm over the moon. I couldn't imagine what this would feel like but it feels so good. Now that I've done it I'm so hungry to win even more."

The Final saw Van Dijk charge to an early lead by building a 10.17 combined heat total in the opening ten minutes. Moore came back with a bang and posted a 7.83 on her backhand to close the gap on her opponent but the young Australian responded and increased her lead, leaving Moore in need of a 2.84. The three-time WSL Champion spent the remainder of the 35 minute bout chasing down a score. Moore took a wave in the final minutes but the score fell short, with a 2.27, and Van Dijk took the win.

Moore broke past the Quarterfinals today for the first time this season with her runner-up finish and dispatched Sage Erickson (USA) and Malia Manuel (HAW) before taking on Van Dijk. After a disappointing season so far Moore came into the event in 9th place on the Jeep Leaderboard but leaves with her best result of 2017 and moves up to 7th place.

“It’s been an up and down year so I’m so stoked just to make it past the Quarterfinals,” said Moore. “The Final was just the cherry on top of a great day. Things are really changing out there. I know I only needed a two-something but sometimes those scores are the hardest to get. I’m really looking forward to France and having a lot of fun there.”

Jeep ratings leader Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) was defeated by eventual winner Van Dijk in Semifinal 1. The shock upset sees Fitzgibbons take home a third place finish but she will retain the Jeep Leader Jersey and increase her lead over her closest rival Courtney Conlogue (USA)heading into the next event on the CT, the Roxy Pro France. Fitzgibbons and Van Dijk were neck and neck through the closing minutes of the heat but Van Dijk edged the win by just 0.16 to eliminate her more experienced competitor.

“It’s a bit tough at the moment,” Fitzgibbons said. “I really thought I’d done enough coming in from that heat. It was one of those heats that I thought I surfed really well so to hear those scores and not come in with the win is a challenge, but something I’ll learn from. It felt good that my surfing stepped up from the Quarterfinals but it just wasn’t to be today. It was a great opportunity today to go further in the lead and I’m glad we’ve got an event next week. The challenge is keeping me inspired and fired up to get out there and keep making heats. Everyone is hungry and surfing so well so it all comes down to these close heats.”

Malia Manuel (HAW) was defeated by Moore in an all-Hawaiian Semifinal match-up and secured her best CT Result since the Vans US Open of Surfing last season. Following a four-event absence due to injury Manuel looks to be regaining her form and today’s result sees her climb up one place on the Jeep Leaderboard to 14th.

“It was fun, I was a little frustrated to fall on that one wave and that changed my outlook on the heat,” Manuel said. “There are so many emotions, I can’t not be grateful for a third place finish but I am disappointed. I’m still feeling a little less than perfect but I’m happy to be back, get in the groove and I’m also so happy for Carissa [Moore]. I love Hossegor so I’m looking forward to that event, it’s one of my favorite stops on tour.”

The EDP Billabong Pro Cascais ran in between women’s heats and completed the fifth round of competition as well as the man-on-man Quarterfinals to set up for an exciting finish on Thursdaymorning at Guincho.

Championship Tour athletes Joan Duru (FRA) and Kanoa Igarashi (USA) battled in the opening Quarterfinal of the event, taking their fight to the powerful walls of Guincho in an exciting display of high-performance surfing. Both surfers posted an excellent ride on the rights and the heat came down to their back-ups, with Igarashi taking a slight advantage, and the first ticket for Semifinal No. 1.

“I’m just really used to surfing these windy and hard conditions because I spend a lot of time here in Portugal and this is the most accessible beach around here,” Igarashi stated. “So it’s a sense of comfort with good boards and all my friends here to support, it definitely helps a lot. I thought Jesse (Mendes) was unreachable, and he’s worked so hard to be there, it’s tough now for him to better his worst result, so I’m still catching up and making a late charge.”

Italo Ferreira (BRA) opened his account with a similar approach on the dredging lefts to take a quick lead over compatriot and two-time winner in Cascais Jadson Andre (BRA). He soon clicked into the next gear and posted two big scores including an incredible 9.27 for a massive forehand rotation to take the win.

“I’m so glad to make another heat, it was a fun one against Jadson (Andre),” Ferreira said. “I had some really fun waves and landed that big air so I’m stoked. I changed boards for one with slightly more volume, there’s a lot of water moving out there so I needed that.”

Cascais’ best ambassador Frederico Morais (PRT) continued to entertain the hopes of the local crowds with a great performance to make his way into the Semifinals as well. Morais started stronger than his opponent Willian Cardoso (BRA) and kept building momentum throughout the thirty minutes of their match-up to walk away with the win and his best-ever result in a major event on home soil.

“I’ve been surfing Guincho my whole life so I know this place and I feel like we have a connexion,” Morais reflected. “It’s been a really fun event and that Semifinal is going to be tough! I’m not sure what conditions will be like tomorrow but I’ll just try to enjoy myself and put on a good show.”

The day’s final heat disappointed slightly as both Griffin Colapinto (USA) and Ezekiel Lau (HAW) struggled to find the big open sections and dangerous closeouts and posted minimal scores up until the ten-minute mark. The Hawaiian worked the hardest to get out of that low-scoring zone and eventually claimed the final ticket for the semis in Cascais.

“That was a fight!” Lau said. “My fin popped out midway through the heat on what I thought was going to be my best wave but I kept fighting. I was still in it, the scores were pretty low so I just told myself I needed two more waves and at the end there I was happy I was able to clutch up.”

Competitors and event officials will reconvene at 9 a.m Thursday in Guincho for the final call of the EDP Billabong Pro Cascais.

Highlights from the the Cascais Women’s Pro are available from WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL app and on the WSL’s Facebook page.

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Wednesday, October 4, 2017) - The Cascais Women's Pro, stop no. 8 on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), and the EDP Billabong Pro Cascais have been called on today. Competition will start with the first 4 heats of Men's Round 5 at 7:30 a.m. followed by the Women's Quarterfinals and Semifinals at the back-up site of Guincho with a possible finish to both events today.

“It's the second last day of the waiting period and tomorrow is looking significantly smaller than today,” Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL Deputy Commissioner said. "Even today conditions have dropped more than we thought so we are planning to finish the women today and try and finish the men's event today as well if we can."

First to compete will be CT surfers Stuart Kennedy (AUS) and Kanoa Igarashi (USA) in Round 5 Heat 1. The women's event will recommence with Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) against Lakey Peterson (USA) in Quarterfinal 1.

Surfline, official forecaster for the EDP Billabong Cascais 2017 and the Cascais Women’s Pro, are calling for:

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Tuesday, October 3, 2017) - The EDP Billabong Pro Cascais resumed after three consecutive lay days, at the back-up venue of Guincho. Solid surf in the six-to-eight foot range was on offer to resume the men’s Round Four remaining four heats.

Local favorite Frederico Morais (PRT), 25, took out the day’s opening bout with great surfing on his backhand, finding clean faces to lay down his signature power carves. The Portuguese superstar, whose heat has been postponed multiple times since the event last ran on Friday, managed to get his rhythm back as soon as the heat started and took an important win to advance into the man-on-man Round Five.

“We were really unlucky with the calls at Carcavelos cause the swell looked good for there but it kind of missed it in the end,” Morais explained. “So we came back to Guincho, which is a very beautiful beach, I love it! It was difficult today with all the whitewash coming through and the big sets you take on the head but I’m very used to surf it like this so it just felt like home.”

Willian Cardoso (BRA), 31, took a similar approach to riding the big walls of Guincho and let his power do the talking. World No. 30 Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) stayed in the heat with some nice hooks on his backhand, and Frenchman Maxime Huscenot despite nailing the biggest single move of the heat, unfortunately placed third.

Cardoso’s performance in Portugal could score him a seat amongst the world’s best surfers next season as with a lowest result of 650 points in his season tally, he’s guaranteed a minimum of 16,000 after Cascais.

“It was a hard heat to win against Leo and Maxime, both great surfers,” Cardoso said. “Both live in France and have a lot of experience in similar conditions, so I tried to do my own thing, catch a wave with some space for a good turn. I’ve been on tour for twelve years and somehow this season everything is working well for me, so I hope to make the finals here.”

Jesse Mendes (BRA), 24, can’t seem to do anything wrong this season and continued to demonstrate his total domination over the rest of the QS field, with another heat win and the day’s highest heat total at Guincho. While points are at this point of the season unimportant for the Brazilian who’s already secured a spot on the Championship Tour, every bit of experience will play in his favor in his rookie season in 2018.

“I’ve been trying to take my time and breathe in between everything, before a heat, during a heat, in between turns,” Mendes reflected. “It calms your nerves and avoids getting ahead or yourself. That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned this year, knowing how to be calm and patient.”

Former CT athlete Alejo Muniz (BRA), 27, took out the day’s last heat as conditions became unruly and gale-force winds began to tear apart the lineup. Muniz spent the first half of his heat completely lost at sea, not able to put a decent score on the board, but managed to come from behind and take out one of the last qualifying spots into Round Five.

“It’s an amazing feeling, I thought I had lost my heat,” Muniz admitted. “I couldn’t hear anything out there and no one was cheering from my crew so I didn’t know the result. I tried to get that last wave from Nat (Young) but he started as well so I really had no idea what would happen. I’ve lost in this round of the past QS10,000 events so I’m stoked to make it through.”

Conditions deteriorated to the point where contest officials had to call competition off for the rest of the day, cutting short hopes of running half of the fifth round today.

Competitors and event officials will reconvene tomorrow at the back-up site of Guincho and start either the women or men’s event at 7:30 a.m for a potential finals day.

Surfline, official forecaster for the EDP Billabong Cascais 2017 and the Cascais Women’s Pro, are calling for:

New WNW swell builds Tuesday into Wednesday with head-overhead surf for Guincho. Carcavelos picks up with waist-shoulder high surf showing for Wednesday morning. Fading swell/surf for both Guincho and Carcavelos on Thursday. Good conditions prevail each day for Carcavelos, while best conditions for Guincho will be in the first half of mornings.

The EDP Billabong Pro Cascais 2017 runs in conjunction with the Cascais Women’s Pro, stop No. 8 on the WSL Women’s Championship Tour and both events are broadcast LIVE via WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL app and on Facebook LIVE via the WSL’s Facebook page.  Also check the local listings for coverage on CBS Sports Network in the U.S., Fox Sports in Australia, ESPN in Brazil, Sky NZ in New Zealand, SFR Sports in France and Portugal, Sport TV in Portugal and the EDGEsport Network.

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Friday, September 29, 2017) - The Cascais Women’s Pro, Stop No. 8 on the World Surf League Championship Tour (CT), completed Round 4 today at the back-up venue of Guincho, deciding the Quarterfinal match-ups. The EDP Billabong Pro Cascais also ran through heats 9 - 12 of Round 3 as well as heats 1 - 4 of Round 4.

Lakey Peterson (USA), the 2015 event runner-up, defeated Silvana Lima (BRA) in Round 4 Heat 1 to make the final series for the fourth time this season. Peterson, who currently sits in 8th place on the Jeep Leaderboard, will advance on in the competition where she will meet Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) for their second ever head-to-head CT match-up in Quarterfinal No. 1.

“I was ready to surf this morning so I’m glad we ran,” Peterson said. “I’m happy to get this round done and keep the momentum going. That heat win felt really good. Silvana [Lima] is deadly in those conditions so I knew it would be tough. I just had to trust in my surfing and focus on a steady heat and looking powerful. Congrats to Silvana on the win the other week but it’s nice to get one back on her.”

Keely Andrew (AUS) battled wildcard Teresa Bonvalot (PRT) in Heat 2 of Round 4. Andrew kept busy throughout the 30-minute bout, posting nine scores to Bonvalot’s three, to earn her Quarterfinal berth. Andrew, who is fresh from a runner-up finish at the recent Swatch Pro Trestles, will take on World No. 1 Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) when competition continues. Bonvalot takes home her best result on the CT, Equal 9th place.

“It’s always nice to make heats,” said Andrew. “I obviously didn’t get the scores that I was hoping for but making it through is what matters. For the rest of the year I just want to put my head down, make sure I can requalify through the top 10 on the CT and feel confident.”

Malia Manuel (HAW) secured her second Quarterfinal berth this season with a Round 4 win today over injury replacement Bianca Buitendag (ZAF). The result is her best since returning to competition after a four-event absence due to injury and she’ll look to better her 2013 Semifinal finish in Cascais. Buitendag, meanwhile, is sent home from her fifth CT wildcard of the year in Equal 9th place.

“It’s always going to be tough against Bianca [Buitendag] because she’s so powerful,” Manuel said. “I just have to play my game and let her do her thing. I’m still not surfing how I want to be surfing and I’m not where I want to be yet but I got lucky and got a couple of opportunities so I’m happy to move on.”

A strong start from Sage Erickson (USA) in the final heat of Round 4 put pressure on current No. 2 on the Jeep Leaderboard, Courtney Conlogue (USA). Erickson continued to hunt the lineup and found a back-up score to cement her lead and eventually eliminate the defending event winner, Conlogue. With only Erickson and Fitzgibbons remaining in the Top 6, the victory puts Erickson firmly in the World Title race.

“It’s pretty crazy to be in this position as a contender,” said Erickson. “For the longest time I’ve always been the spoiler or the underdog. I love Courtney [Conlogue] so much and I want her to win a title one day but I’m actually in a position where I could win one. The more that I take down those Top 4 the better I feel. She’s a huge hurdle so it feels amazing to get over it and keep that momentum going. I want to go all the way and I think I surf better when I surf against the best so I’m excited.”

“I just felt really out of rhythm today,” Conlogue said. “No one wants a result like that but I’m still in the game and I still have a shot at the title. When you’re in a world title race you’re always going to have scars but it’s how you recover from that and make sure it doesn’t define you.”

Competition had previously resumed with the remaining four heats of the men’s Round Three early this morning.

Perennial QS threat Maxime Huscenot (FRA), 25, took out the opening heat of the day, slightly ahead of Australian Championship Tour rookie Ethan Ewing. Huscenot took it to the Guincho lefts and applied his precise backhand vertical attack to find two good scores and unfortunately eliminate fellow Frenchman Marc Lacomare in the process.

“I really want to win an event, I feel like my surfing is there and that’s what’s driving me,” Huscenot said. “My dad and I have been training together since I’m 12, he’s been filming me every day in Reunion before his work and before I went to school, he knows me perfectly and knows when I’m fired up or when I'm feeling down. It’s awesome to have someone like this by your side, my mom and my sister are really involved as well, it’s very nice.”

The following two heats featured a collection of past and present CT talents as well as hopeful new qualifiers. Jesse Mendes (BRA), 24, continued his winning streak to move into Round Four alongside Nat Young (USA).

“Things are going my way a lot of the time and I’ll take it!” Mendes said. “It’s hard to get momentum, I was struggling for a few years getting big wins and unable to back them up. This year my focus has been on being consistent and I want to keep the ball rolling and enjoy it.”

Ryan Callinan (AUS), 25, advanced as well, taking the top spot ahead of Alejo Muniz (BRA), Miguel Pupo (BRA) and Michael February (ZAF).

“I didn’t feel like I had much pressure out there, there’s still three big events left in the year,” Callinan commented. “I’m not doing too well on the rankings but I just want to perform and surf my best in heats. Watching Fred (Morais) and how well he’s doing this year gives me a bit of fire and Dog (Richard Marsh, his coach) is just telling me to attack and show everyone what I can do, not hold anything back.”

Griffin Colapinto (USA), 19, and Ezekiel Lau (HAW) took the debate above the lip in the final heat, with the Californian bringing his a-game to take a big win over the Hawaiian. Colapinto sits right on the bubble of qualification coming into Cascais ranked No. 10 on the QS and will be looking to secure a strong finish in Portugal to solidify his position before the Hawaiian showdown.

Following the completion of Round Three, the first four heats of Round Four were completed in degrading conditions, eventually forcing event officials to call the rest of the Round off for the day. The event’s top seeds took the top two qualifying spots in each heats  with highlight performances from Stuart Kennedy (AUS) and Joan Duru (FRA) in heats 1 & 2 when conditions were easier to work with.

Competitors and event officials will reconvene at 7:45 a.m Saturday at the main event site of Carcavelos for a potential start of the remaining heats of the men’s Round Four.

Surfline, official forecaster for the EDP Billabong Cascais 2017 and the Cascais Women’s Pro, are calling for:

A solid overhead NW swell builds into Guincho late Friday into Saturday, but expect the rise of strong northerly winds to accompany it (Carcavelos will remain small). A final WNW swell is due for October 3rd-4th with head-overhead sets for Guincho and improved conditions (a little more size showing for Carcavelos as well on this pulse).

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais/Portugal (Thursday, September 28, 2017) - The Cascais Women’s Pro, Stop No. 8 on the World Surf League Championship Tour (CT), resumed today at the back-up venue of Guincho in clean four-to-six foot surf. Competition ran through Rounds 2 and 3, with the first four Quarterfinalists decided. Following the conclusion of the women’s event the EDP Billabong Pro Cascais ran through heats 1 - 8 of Round 3.

Reigning WSL Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) was eliminated in Round 2 at the hands of local wildcard Teresa Bonvalot (PRT). Today was the first CT win for Bonvalot, who is competing as a wildcard in Cascais for the fifth year. Wright suffered an injury during a freesurf earlier this week, tearing her MCL, and today’s 13th place finish is her worst result of the season with possible world title implications.

“I was just so nervous,” Bonvalot said. “I’m pretty stoked, it’s my first heat win as a wildcard on the CT. The waves are pretty good and you just have to be patient and wait for the right ones. Until the end things were pretty close. It’s just crazy how nervous and scared I was - so much more than on the QS or the Juniors. I knew that she could get a big score at any time. I have nothing to lose but now I want more and to make heats and beat the best surfers in the world.”

“My leg is still sore, I did it three days ago,” said Wright. “I could have sat this event out but I’d rather win or lose on my feet so I decided to compete. Teresa had a really smart heat and played a smart game so I’m stoked for her. For a wildcard I thought she did really well. My MCL is 70% off the bone so between now and France I’ll focus on healing and getting myself in the best physical health to compete there. Even though I lost it’s hard for me to figure out how I lost. I don’t feel like I’m injured, I still feel like I can go out there and win. I’ve got a really good team and I’m feeling good.”

Bonvalot went on to face Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) and Lakey Peterson (USA) in Round 3. Van Dijk claimed the win and her place in the Quarterfinals with a 7.33. Peterson and Bonvalot will surf again in Round 4.

Another upset played out in Round 2 Heat 4 when injury replacement Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) defeated six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), despite finding a solid score on her opening wave. Buitendag was able to close the heat with a 6.77 to secure her advancement in the competition and send Gilmore home in 13th place.

“Sometimes things just go your way and today is one of those days,” Gilmore said. “It’s tough out there and things are moving a lot. The goal is to take things one day at a time and not to plan too much. I’ve been overthinking things a lot so I’m trying to keep things simple.”

“It’s super tough out there,” Gilmore said. “There are plenty of opportunities but it’s tough to find them. I relied too much on my forehand. Bianca [Buitendag] is so strong. It was tough and it’s a terrible result. The year’s not over and anything could happen. I’m sure Courtney, Sally and Carissa are pretty excited that Tyler and myself are out but it will certainly put the pressure on them. That’s the excitement of sport! I’m looking forward to France, I love that event, and I’ll make the most of my time here in Portugal.”

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), current No. 1 on the Jeep Leaderboard, earned her place in the Quarterfinals with a Round 3 victory over Keely Andrew (AUS) and Silvana Lima (BRA). Andrew and Lima will have another chance to advance in Round 3 when competition continues.

“There’s always a big advantage to skipping rounds and I’m really happy to be through to the Quarterfinals,” Fitzgibbons said. “This year I really have that calm and confidence that I do have what it takes to make it through to Finals and win events. I think last year I was lacking in a couple of areas and I’ve been chasing those and building it back up. I’m really ready and I want to keep going all the way. I’ve been in title races before so I’m just trying to bring out my best performances and enjoying my time in the ocean.”

Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) also secured a Quarterfinal berth with the top score of the heat, a 7.77,  on her final wave. Manuel’s final wave fell just short of what was required and she will join current World No. 2 Courtney Conlogue (USA) in elimination Round 4.

“There’s so many scoring opportunities out there, it’s just a matter of being in line for one,” said Weston-Webb. “Grit and determination the whole time. I don’t know what’s happening at the moment but I’m surfing pressure free and not letting results define me. I really like the waves here and I’ve been having so much surfing here. I’m really focused on consistency at the moment.”

The final women’s heat of the day saw Carissa Moore (HAW) claim victory and a place in the Quarterfinals. Erickson had the highest single-wave score of the day, a 7.90, but wasn’t able to find a back-up and will have to surf again in Round 4 along with Buitendag.

French surfers Pauline Ado (FRA) and Johanne Defay (FRA) both suffered early elimination in Round 2 at the hands of Van Dijk and Manuel respectively. The result is Defay’s worst of the year and Ado’s sixth 13th place finish.

Following the conclusion of the women’s event competition ran through the first 8 heats of Round 3 of the EDP Billabong Pro Cascais.

Kanoa Igarashi (USA), 19, came out victorious of a stacked Round Three matchup against fellow Championship Tour athlete Stuart Kennedy (AUS) as well as Joshua Moniz (HAW) and Patrick Gudauskas (USA). Igarashi dominated on the clean and long lefts to post an excellent 8 point ride and a strong backup. The Californian’s flow, linking maneuvers with speed and control all the way into the shore break earned him one of the day’s highest heat totals for his spot into Round Four.

“It’s funny conditions are so much different in the water from what you’re looking at on the beach,” Igarashi explained. “But I’m just glad I was able to go out there and use my instincts and guide myself to the waves I wanted to catch and it worked out. The QS is a year long series of events of trying to be consistent in all those different places. I got a couple good years and it’d be sick to get that QS trophy at some point.”

Joan Duru (FRA), 28, brought his CT polished act to the party in the very next heat and nailed four great waves to build an impressive 15.73 total in the Guincho lefts and rights. The Frenchman who found his groove midway through the season on the elite tour, currently sits in 18th position and is looking to build momentum in Cascais towards performing on home turf next week at the Quiksilver Pro France.

“I was so lucky in that heat, I started with a good left and got a right on my way back out, then another left and another right,” Duru stated. “I hope that luck stays with me for the rest of the week. The transition to the QS is never easy, you have four guys out there absolutely ripping. I have some new boards that I wanted to try in the beach breaks and they’re working really good so I’m stoked, they should be sick at home in France.”

Wade Carmichael (AUS), 24, is in his best qualifying effort in 2017 and currently right outside the door of the coveted QS Top 10. The Australian has been finding his form in the last two qualifying events of Galicia and Azores and put on the day’s biggest performance to move into Round Four ahead of World No. 23 Italo Ferreira (BRA).

“I didn’t know what was going on the whole time and just kept catching waves,” Carmichael said. “I had the world’s worst free surf this morning and a long day of waiting so I was really nervous but I just wanted to catch waves! These 10,000s and the last two 6,000s were so hard but you have to bring your A-game and just try to put some good waves together.”

Mikey Wright (AUS) and Jadson Andre (BRA) came out on top of arguably the round’s biggest heat against Connor O'Leary (AUS) and Jorgann Couzinet (FRA). At the term of a really tense battle, Wright’s forehand power carves were the winning ingredient.

Local hero Frederico Morais (PRT), 25, had a close call in Round Three and had trouble getting his heat underway with a couple of below average scores. The Portuguese superstar came back in a big way with three good waves in the last five minutes to jump from third into the lead and walk away with the win.

Competitors and event officials will reconvene at 7:45 a.m Friday for a potential start of either the QS or CT competitions.

Surfline, official forecaster for the EDP Billabong Cascais 2017 and the Cascais Women’s Pro, are calling for:

Mid period NW swell continues Thursday with the most size at Guincho, which will be in the head high/overhead range on sets (Carcavelos small).  Morning wind looks favorable. Another NW swell will build in Friday afternoon/evening and peak Saturday and looks a couple notches larger than the current swell. Strong N/NNW wind also looks likely for Friday afternoon through the weekend. A final WNW/NW swell is possible toward the end of the waiting period, around October 3rd.
