Surfers continue to surf hard representing their nations while the field of medal contenders narrowed.   Twenty-four international athletes were eliminated from competition in the constantly changing conditions that ranged from perfect offshore wind in the morning, to heavy rainsqualls in the afternoon.   Costa Rica's Leilani McGonagle took advantage of the morning offshore wind and posted the highest heat score of the day for the women's division. McGonagle scored 16.27 in her heat victory, and moved one step closer to the Women's Final.   "I am super stoked to have made that heat! Original ISA World Surfing Games presented by Lafise and Claro got off to an impressive start on the event's Opening Day.    The Men opened the event and gave the crowd a dose of what is to come, by performing critical maneuvers throughout all 24 heats of the Main Event. As predicted by Surfline, the official forecaster of the event, the ocean offered consistent chest to head high sets throughout the day allowing the competitors to display their world-class talent. The conditions were clean as Nicaragua's infamous offshore winds blew lightly from dawn until dusk. "The first round was absolutely amazing! Peru Crowned World Team Champion, Argentina’s Leandro Usuna Wins The Gold Medal In Men’s, Peru’s Anali Gomez Wins the Gold Medal In Women’s and Peru Wins The ISA Aloha Cup With Incredible Waves At Punta Rocas, Peru

Following an incredible Final Day of great waves and tremendous surfing, the Champions of the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games were crowned.

Peru is the new World Team Champion after narrowly defeating Australia, who placed second, Argentina in third and Costa Rica in fourth. The host country is also the winner of the Fernando Aguerre World Team Champion Trophy and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President’s Trophy.

The Final Day came to a nail-biting finish. The stars lined up perfect for Team Peru by winning the Women’s Final and with the Australian Men finishing third and fourth in the Final to upset the Aussies. Peru defeated Australia by a small margin of only 62 points in the overall Team Standings, one of the closes margins of victory in ISA history.

Argentina’s Leandro Usuna is the new Men’s Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games Gold Medalist. With powerful turns and carves in overhead surf at Punta Rocas; Usuna showed solid performances during the whole event, ultimately awarded him the Gold.

The local favorite Anali Gomez is the new Women’s Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games Gold Medalist. Gomez earned the Gold Medal with a solid score in the last minutes of her heat.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre commented: “We have come back to the place where the 1965 World Surfing Championship was held, Punta Rocas, that gave us eight days of amazing waves. The best ones were the first and the last and it has been a great show.”

Aguerre continued, “Fifty years ago the ISA was founded in Australia. We had five members. We have ninety now. It has been a great ride. Today, I would like to give thanks to Peru, for receiving us; we love to come to Peru. Also I would like to thank all the athletes and teams. To the public sector sponsors: the Peruvian Institute of Sports, the Peruvian Olympic Athletes Association, Peru’s National Surfing Federation and its President Carlos Neuhaus and Karin Sierralta the organizer. The swell predicted by Surfline, the official forecasters of the event, arrived just in time for the Finals with surf in the 6-8ft range with occasional double overhead waves.

The world-class point break of Punta Rocas, Peru allowed the world’s best surfers to compete at their highest potential and fight for the Team Championship and individual Gold Medals.

To start of the day, the Final of the ISA Aloha Cup took place. Peru won the Gold Medal, defeating Argentina, who earned the Silver Medal, South Africa the Bronze Medal, and Australia the Copper Medal.

In the Women’s Repechage, the two Aussie Girls, Jessica Grimwood (14.50) and Philippa Anderson (12.03), advanced to the Grand Final, defeating Japan’s Nao Omura (9.10), and Costa Rica’s Leilani McGonagle (8.93).

Grimwood and Anderson then joined Peru’s Anali Gomez and Ecuador’s Dominic Barona in the dramatic Women’s Grand Final. It was the Peruvian that came from behind in the last minute of the heat to take the win. Gomez earned a 12.86 to win the Gold Medal. In second place, earning the Silver Medal was Ecuador’s Dominic Barona (12.53), followed by Australian’s Philippa Anderson (12.50) earning the Bronze Medal and Jessica Grimwood (11.63) with the Copper Medal.

“I’m super happy, I thank all the people of Peru and Punta Hermosa, my family and everybody who sent me good vibes,” said the Gold Medalist. “I’ve been working 20 years for this and thank God it happened here at my home. With 30 seconds remaining I paddled with all my strength and the only thing on my mind was that this was my moment”.

On the Men’s side, the Repechage Final had a nerve-wracking fight for the final two spots in the Grand Final. Australia’s Nicholas Squires won with 13.57 and in second place with a 12.66, Costa Rica’s Anthony Filligim earned a spot in the Grand Final. Peru’s Joaquin Del Castillo came in third with a 12.20 and Argentina’s Santiago Muniz in fourth with a 8.09 were eliminated from the competition.

To finish the event, the Men’s Final featured Leandro Usuna (ARG), Shane Holmes (AUS), Nicholas Squires (AUS) and Anthony Fillingim (CRI). There was no way to stop the Argentinian as he dominated the heat earning an impressive 8.90 and 9.63, the two highest scores of the heat for a total heat score of 18.53 to earn the Gold Medal. In second place, earning the Silver Medal was Costa Rica’s Anthony Fillingim (13.57), followed by Australia’s Shane Holmes (12.84) earning the Bronze Medal and Nicholas Squires (12.70) with the Copper Medal.

“I’m so happy to win and represent my country of Argentina this way! This means everything,” said the Gold Medalist. “I remember my first ISA World Championship in 2004 in Tahiti, exactly ten years ago, so I’m super happy to have won this, I can’t wait for the next one. I want to thank Peru, and all of the people from Latin-America.”

To give the athletes a break between the Repechage and the Grand Finals, a unique “ISA 50th Anniversary Presidents Board Meeting” took place in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the ISA. ISA President Fernando Aguerre was joined by all the Presidents of the National Surfing Federations in attendance to share a free surf and discuss the future of the sport in the water.

When the surfing competition concluded, the Closing Ceremony took place to officially close the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games and award the team trophies and individual medals.

Photo: ISA/Michael Tweddle The Men's, Women's, ISA Aloha Cup and Team Champions Will Be Crowned On Saturday    Punta Rocas, Peru, October 31, 2014 - The stage is set for the Finals after an intense Day 7 of competition during the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games at the world-class pointbreak of Punta Rocas, Peru. On Saturday, the Open Men's, Open Women's, ISA Aloha Cup and Team Champions will be crowned.   Big shifts took place in the overall Team Points. Australia overtook the lead and Peru is now sitting in second. Argentina moved up to third followed by Costa Rica, Ecuador and South Africa. Full team standings here.   ISA President Fernando Aguerre commented: "They say that all good things must come to an end. Sadly, tomorrow is the Final Day. The waves were very nice and clean, and for tomorrow we are expecting bigger waves, for an incredible last day. Watch the finals followed by the medal ceremony. Competition Heats Up As Surfers Face Do-Or-Die Elimination Rounds

Peru’s great waves provide an action packed Day 4 at the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games. The surf remained overhead, with clean and sunny conditions.

Competition heats up as it reaches its mid-point, and the surfers faced the do-or-die elimination rounds. As each day passes, the overall team points begin to shift and currently, Peru is leading the ratings followed by Argentina and Chile, who are tied for second. “We are in beautiful Punta Rocas for the fourth day of the championship,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “The waves today, which are average for Peru, are like the best waves in most countries of the world. We are in paradise, it’s called Peru.”

The nail-biting day featured Repechage Rounds 2 and 3 for the Men’s and Round 2 for Women’s.

Argentina’s Nahuel Rull, was the best surfer in the Men’s Repechage. The Argentinean earned a 15.34, and defeated Chile’s Cristian Merello (10.77), advancing in second place, and Colombia’s Anderson Tascon (7.23), and Yoji Osedo (5.3) from Japan, were sent home. Even though Rull advanced to Round 3, he was eliminated from the competition after placing third in his following heat.

In the Women’s Repechage, Peruvian Melanie Giunta had all the support on her side, and achieved the highest score of the Round, a 12.6.

“Yesterday was a hard day for me,” said Giunta after winning her heat, “but thanks to the whole team that supported me and gave me good advice I was more confident today. I was nervous at first, but then I got a good wave and I could show my surfing and to get the score I needed. The whole team gave me the right words to keep me moving forward. I’m happy to continue in the competition step by step towards the final.”

Giunta defeated, Celia Barboza from Uruguay, who advanced in second with a 9.4, Colombia’s Margarita Conde (4.77), and Mexico’s Pamela Verboonen (1.33) placed third and fourth, respectively, and were eliminated from the competition.

The original painting featuring the world-class point break and location of the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games will be auctioned to raise funds for the Municipality Surf School of Punta Hermosa, Peru.

TThe proceeds from the auction will benefit the Municipality Surf School of Punta Hermosa to buy new surfboard and teach the kids to surf and give the opportunity to learn new skills with a healthy activity and stay away from bad habits.

Throughout the year the surf school offers free surf classes to underprivileged kids ranging from four years old to teenagers. The school provides free surfboards and classes for students from Punta Hermosa that are not able buy a their own wetsuits or surfboards.

The primary goal of the school is to show the kids how to surf, but more importantly to develop the youth of Punta Hermosa. The school gives an opportunity for the kids to learn new skills with a healthy activity and stay away from bad habits. Surfing has proven to be an option leading to a professional surfing career, as it has already been the case for many Peruvian surfers.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre commented: “Today we had very important guests, the children of Punta Hermosa. Thanks to the donation of the event art by painter Flavio Caporali, these and other children, will get to surf on boards that will be bought with the proceedings of the auction of the painting. Flavio is not just an amazing artist, he’s a top big wave rider and the nicest human being”.

Flavio Caporali, is the artist who created the painting of the iconic Punta Rocas line-up. The Brazilian painter has received so much from the Peruvian waves and the people of Punta Hermosa, that he wanted to give back to the community.

“I have lived in Peru for many years, and I have riden so many waves and had great friendships from all the local people I have met. Now I want to give something back to the community through my art, as a way of thanking them for the great experiences I have enjoyed here. I hope that through this initiative we can continue giving the children of Punta Hermosa a better future through surfing. I want to personally thank the continued support from the ISA and its President Fernando Aguerre, the Municipality of Punta Hermosa and its Mayor, Guillermo Fernandez, and our sponsors Sunset Surfboard, AIWIS (All I Want Is Surf) Clothing, Olas Peru – Escuela de Tabla, and Trattoria Don Angelo.”

The money raised from the auction will benefit the surf school with the goal of purchasing 10 new surfboards for the Municipal Surf School of Punta Hermosa and equipment like wetsuits and wax.

The World’s Best Women And Men Surfers Representing 22 Countries Dominate Amazing Punta Rocas, Peru, On Day 3 Of Competition

The world’s best Women surfers hit to the water for the first time on Day 3 of the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games. The surf was perfect during the day, which allowed the women to showcase their technical skills that demonstrated how far the development of the sport has come in women’s surfing.

Punta Rocas, delivered once again with incredible waves that lined up perfect all the way from the outside to the inside, allowing the representatives from the 22 National Teams to compete at the highest level for the coveted Individual Gold Medals and the Fernando Aguerre World Team Trophy.

It was Ecuador Team Member, Dominic “Mimi” Barona that took full advantage of the conditions, dominating her heat and earning the event’s highest total heat score of 18.23.

Barona commented about her heat: “I saw this wave, and I knew that it had a lot of potential, I just surfed and the judges liked it. I know that I have the level and I have trained hard for this, so I want to show it off and now the results are here.”

“I feel like at home, I love this wave,” continued the ecstatic Ecuadorean. “You just need to know which waves to surf, so I think that I have a good connection here with the sea. The Peruvian people treat me great and I also have my team that is like my family. It’s great to know that you have these people supporting you and also to show that women are raising the level of performance.”

Barona defeated 2013 Girls U-16 ISA World Junior Silver Medalist, Karelle Popke (8.56) from Tahiti, Tanika Hoffman (8.40) from South Africa, and Denisse Martinez (2.37) from Mexico.

After the Women’s Round 1, the Men’s Main Event Round 3 took place, where Anthony Fillingim from Costa Rica had the highest total heat score of the round, with a total of 16.36, defeating Mexico’s Diego Cadena (10.47), New Zealand’s Tane Wallis (9.56) and Chile’s Tristan Aicardi (7.03).

To close the day, the roster of competitors narrowed for the first time, after the first athletes were sent home during Men’s Repechage Round 1. The standout of this elimination round was Australia´s Otis Carey, who posted a total heat score of 12.5, defeating Costa Rica’s Maykol Torres (9.84) and Scotland’s Iain Masson (3.73), who was eliminated from the event. Unfortunately for the Aussie, he suffered an injury towards the end of the heat, dislocating his shoulder on a wipeout, and will be sidelined for the remainder of the event.

Another great story of the day was Russia’s Sergey Rasshivaev, who won his heat with of 6.56, defeating Colombia’s Alejandro Covo Meisel (4.23), and Turkey’s Onat Ersoy (.66).
