8 April 2016 – The Victory Team lived up to their name and reputation by taking the first title of the 2016 UIM XCAT World Powerboating Series with a win at the Fujairah GP on Friday.

The defending Series champions, Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi, stormed to the front in typical fashion and led from start to finish to top the podium and the Series after round 1.

It was not a race without drama, however, as Team Australia (Brett Luhrmann and Paul Virik Nilsen) and Abu Dhabi Team 5 (Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori) collided at the first turn and the Australians flipped their boat.

With both drivers safely back on land, the race was restarted with Victory Team once again storming to the front on the first lap.

“It was dream race, yes, but the challenge was very tough,” said Bin Hendi. Speaking about having to start the race a second time, he added: “We were leading already so mentally it upsets you – a bit up and down because you have to do the start again. You don’t know what’s going to happen and you predict a lot of things but luckily it went in our favour and as you saw, Victory boats are always very good at the start.”

That they certainly were and once at the front the duo executed their race plan to perfection.

Meanwhile, further back Gold Coast.Australia were steadily making their way up the field. After a dismal start in eighth position, Tom Barry-Cotter and Ross Willaton made the decision to take their long laps early and the strategy paid off.

The pair had worked their way up to fourth spot when the Fujairah Team (Serafino Barlesi and Alessandro Barone) experienced problems and lost speed, meaning the Australians moved up into the podium places. Swecat Racing (Mikael Bentsson and Erik Stark) who were then in second still had one more long lap to complete however – and when they tackled that, the Gold Coast boast made their move up into second, where they stayed until the finish.

“We had a really bad qualifying session so we were starting from eighth on the grid,” explained Gold Coast’s Barry-Cotter. “We had a lot of technical issues but we knew all weekend that the boat had a lot of pace. It was just the technical issues holding us back.

“We got a really bad start so from there we were literally one of the last boats to come around the second corner so we made the call to take both the long laps straight away and we managed to have clear water. We honestly didn’t know until right at the end that we were still on for a podium, just because so many of the boats waited so long to take their long laps. So it was a lot of suspense for us. We were really aggressive. It’s a really great result for the team. They worked so hard to get the boat ready and I can’t thank them enough.”

Speaking about the new Mercury XCAT ROS 400 engines that have been introduced to the Series for the first time in this race, Barry-Cotter added: “Early in the weekend they had some gremlins but Mercury have been really good and the WPPA have been fantastic in tuning the engines to all the teams’ needs and they performed flawlessly this race and the boat is performing really well.”

Swecat eventually finished third with the Dubai combination of Salem Al Adidi and Eisa Al Ali grateful they weren’t the ones flipping their boat again – and finishing in fourth place.

“We didn’t know if we had the gap we needed to take the long lap but it was so close. I really enjoyed it. This is what racing should be like,” enthused Swecat’s Stark afterwards.

“These are really strong new engines so when you’re jumping they’re really pushing you. I really enjoyed it. For sure this is the future of XCAT,” he added.

Attention now moves to Dubai where the second round of the XCAT World Series will be contested from April 15-16.

Abu Dhabi Team 5 come out top in new Pole Position format

7 April, 2016 – Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori mastered the new Emaar Pole Position format to ensure Abu Dhabi Team 5 will start Friday’s Fujairah GP – the opening round of the 2016 UIM XCAT World Series – in top spot.

The duo left it to their last lap in the first qualifying session to avoid finishing as one of the bottom five teams, who were knocked out of contention, with the top nine progressing to session two.

They also just made it through the 10-minute second session of qualifying with the fourth fastest time – and only four boats progressing to the final round.

But a penalty imposed on the quickest two boats for jumping the green flag in the final session (which consisted of just one timed lap) worked in the Abu Dhabi Team’s favour.

The defending Fujairah GP champions will start in first with the Team Australia boat of Brett Luhrmann and Pal Virik Nilsen (who were quickest in both first and second sessions) starting in second spot with Victory Team (Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi) third and T-Bone Station (Giovanni Carpitella and Marco Pennesi) in fourth.

“We had good conditions for the race today,” said Al Tayer afterwards. “We started with good speed and we pushed hard. Our strategy was to keep the surprise for the last lap in the first session because good players don’t show all their cards from the start.

Al Mansoori added: “It was a very successful strategy. Now we are on the top and what is better than that?”

Speaking about the new Emaar Pole Position format, Al Mansoori added: “The new format is very good because it moves away the weak teams from the start and keeps the field open only for the strongest and best.

As for tomorrow’s GP, Al Tayer reckoned: “Fujairah always has different conditions and usually the afternoon has rough water so we must expect anything but our plan is always to drive fast and furious.”

Later in the day, Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi made a return to the top of the podium with victory in the Dubai Duty Free Speed Cat Run at the opening round of the 2016 UIM XCAT World Series in Fujairah on Thursday.

The Victory Team duo cruised through round one, beating Swecat (Mikael Bengtsson and Erik Stark) before getting the better of Abu Dhabi Team 4 (Majed Al Mansoori and Rashed Al Qamzi) in round two.

Then came a showdown with the high-flying T-Bone Station team (Giovanni Carpitella and Marco Pennesi) which they edged before coming up against Six (Matteo Nicolini and Tomaso Polli) in the final.

Six, who looked far better than they have all week, had reached the final after victories over the super-speedy Team Australia (Brett Luhrmann and Pal Virik Nilsen) and Emaar Pole Position winners Abu Dhabi Team 5 (Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori, who had reached an incredible 180km/hr) in the first and second rounds.

They then out-paced Lady Spain (Jay Price and Sean Torrente) in the penultimate round to set up the final with Victory Team.

T-Bone Station completed the podium with a third-place race-off win over Lady Spain. Looking at the podium it was interesting to note that two of the three places were occupied by boats with two-stroke engines.

Attention now turns to the main race of the weekend – the Fujairah GP which gets underway at 4pmtomorrow with Team Abu Dhabi 5 in first spot, Team Australia in second, Victory Team third and T-Bone Station fourth.

About the UIM XCAT World Powerboat Series:

XCAT, short for extreme catamaran, is one of the most challenging and extreme forms of powerboat racing in the world with the largest international contingent and greatest number of teams competing at spectacular locations across the globe.

The XCAT World Series has experienced phenomenal growth in the last three years and 2015 saw even further expansion with races taking place on three different continents – including the exciting new venues of Australia and Portugal.

The XCAT World Series stands well apart from other offshore powerboat racing events thanks to its unrelenting desire to reinvent and enhance the sport, delivering a unique, all-encompassing experience for host cities, spectators and the teams involved.

UIM XCAT World Series Facts and Figures

  • The boats can reach top speeds of around 200km/hour at their fastest
  • They are constructed using advanced carbon fibre technology and have two engines
  • Boats are inspected by an official from the UIM (the world governing body for powerboating) before the races to ensure they comply with stringent safety standards
  • There are two drivers in the cockpit during the races – one driver behind the wheel and the other is the throttleman
  • Communication between the two is vital – otherwise it could result in flipping the boat
  • There is an escape hatch at the bottom of the boat so that if it does flip, the drivers are able to escape
  • There are usually between 10 and 14 boats competing in each race which makes it very tricky for the boats travelling behind the front-runners as they have to deal with the spray and waves
  • Each lap of an XCAT race course is 3.2 nautical miles with boats completing a minimum of 10 laps and a maximum of 16 in any given race
  • The WPPA (promoters of the Series) have created and developed a unique containerised system in order to be able to transport the competing boats and other equipment in the most efficient manner. XDubai power to Abu Dhabi GP win for fourth XCAT title

27 November 2015 – The XDubai team of Nadir bin Hendi and Arif Al Zaffain wrapped up the 2015 UIM XCAT World Series with a masterclass in powerboat racing, leading the Abu Dhabi GP from start to finish to take the overall title for the fourth consecutive season.

Heading into the sixth and final race of the year, and starting in third position after a number of problems in Pole Position, Bin Hendi had admitted to a few butterflies, with the Abu Dhabi team of Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori just five points behind them in the overall standings.

But the massively experienced defending Series champions mastered the rough conditions on the start lap to reach the first buoy, and the safety of the flat water, in first position.

The T-Bone Station team of Giovanni Carpitella and Darren Nicholson, who started in second spot, had come close to challenging them when taking a tight line into the first turn, but could just not edge ahead and stayed in second spot for the remainder of the race.

Al Zaffain explained there were a few nervous moments in the boat when he thought they were experiencing gear problems at the start.

“At the start we saw the Abu Dhabi Team doing a big jump and we didn’t want to do the same so I put my finger on the right engine trim,” he said.

“I used too much trim and thought I had a problem with the gear box and then Nadir reminded me: ‘Your finger, your finger on the trim!’ So we went down, but it was for this reason that we lost maybe two seconds and for this reason that T-Bone Station came so close to us.

“But then we pushed again and it was good to finish the race without any problems,” he added.
Bin Hendi said there was much elation in the boat once they crossed the finish and the successful defence of their title was secured.

“It was a feeling we can’t express. We screamed in the cockpit very loudly. We were so hungry for it. Thank God we got it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Carpitella explained that he knew beforehand the start would be vital. “We had to do everything we could at the start because the rest of the race was flat and we knew we couldn’t win it in those conditions,” he said. “Once we reached the flat water the race was over and then it wasn’t worth it to take any risks so we just aimed to keep our position in second.”

As for just missing out on an overall Series podium spot (they would have claimed third had they won Saturday’s race but eventually finished in fourth place) the Italian was not particularly concerned.

“I was just racing to win this race and wasn’t really thinking about third place in the Championship,” he said.

XDubai’s closest challenger in the Series, Abu Dhabi Team, whose only race win of the season came in the opening round in Fujairah, eventually finished in third place in Saturday’s race and settled for second spot overall in the Series.

The Italian duo of Tomaso Polli and Matteo Nicolini in Six held on to third spot overall in the Series despite a disappointing 12th place finish on Saturday after losing power in one of the engines. Mathematically the pair could still have claimed top spot in the championship but it was not their day.

“One of the engines started to not give 100 per cent performance. The boat was going slowly and the last three laps we were just going down so our goal then was just to finish to get the points for third place overall and we managed to finish,” he explained.

The Dubai team of Salem Al Adidi and Eisa Al Ali, who started in Pole Position in Saturday’s race, had a horrible start and were well back by the first turn but managed to recover to finish in third spot. XCAT racing will take a short break now as the 2016 season kicks off in March with some exciting new venues on the cards. The official 2016 calendar will be announced in the coming weeks.

26 November 2015, Abu Dhabi – The Dubai team of Salem Al Adidi and Eisa Al Ali claimed Pole Position for Friday’s Abu Dhabi GP with just minutes to spare by recording the fastest lap of 2:27.771 in qualifying at the final round of the UIM XCAT World Series on Thursday.

Locked in a fascinating three-way battle, it looked like T-Bone Station (Giovanni Carpitella and Darren Nicholson) had Pole Position all sewn up after powering ahead of XDubai (Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi), who were then leading, with around 12 minutes to go with a lap of 2:27.804.

But in a strategic move, the Dubai boat waited until the final five minutes of the session to make their attack and they raced ahead to bag their first ever XCAT Pole Position. With the top three boats all within three tenths of one another, Friday’s race should be an enthralling affair.

Throttleman Al Ali gave plenty of credit to his driver Al Adidi. “I am so happy – I have a lion in my boat,” he said with a smile. “Salem did such a good job on the turns. I didn’t slow down for him. I came full throttle and he made the turns. He’s a lion.”

Al Adidi added: “We are very happy to be in first place. We are so excited about this very flat water – we love these conditions. It’s fantastic so we knew we had to push and to get this pole to show everybody we are good.

“We knew it was very close. The top three were very close but we knew we could improve more and more every time so we waited until five minutes before the chequered flag and I said: ‘Ok Eisa, let’s go! We will beat everybody’.”

This result is a far cry from the Dubai boat’s disastrous fourth round of the XCAT World Series just a few months ago in Australia where the duo managed to flip their boat twice during the race weekend. The conditions there were vastly different, however, compared to the silky smooth water in the UAE capital this week.

Talking about the start for Friday’s race, which is free of charge to the general public, Al Adidi explained: “We will plan our strategy now – depending on the conditions for tomorrow if it’s flat or rough. If it’s flat we are ok. We will fight to reach the first buoy in first position. We know we are good.”

With Dubai first, T-Bone Station second and XDubai third, the battle to that first buoy will likely be a battle of note.

Starting in fourth position will be the Abu Dhabi team of Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori who are currently one point off the overall Series lead. And occupying the all-important final spot in the top gate will be the Lady Spain team of Jay Price and Shaun Torrente.

Meanwhile, later in the afternoon on Thursday, T-Bone Station claimed Dubai Duty Free Speed Cat Run honours for the second time this season at the sixth and final round of the UIM XCAT Powerboat World Series in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

The Italian team, who also bagged top spot in the head-to-head drag race-style contest in Australia in August, defeated current Series leaders XDubai (Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir Bin Hendi) in the final to take the title.

Despite settling for second place on Thursday, the XDubai duo have still managed to extend their lead at the top of the overall Series standings and are now five points ahead of second-placed Team Abu Dhabi (Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori) heading into Friday’s decider – the Abu Dhabi GP. Team Abu Dhabi could only reach the second round on Thursday.

T-Bone Station made their way to the final by defeating Team Saracen Australia (Brett Luhrmann and Pal Virik Nilsen) in the first round before getting the better of Marine Investimenti Sud (Serafino Barlesi and Alessandro Barone) in the second. They then went on to beat the boat that will start Friday’s Abu Dhabi GP in Pole Position, Dubai (Salem Al Adidi and Eisa Al Ali), in the semifinal to book their final showdown with XDubai.

The action continues on Friday with a tense finale on the cards as the teams take to the water for the final time this season. Should XDubai finish first or second, the Championship will be theirs but last weekend’s race in Dubai, where the UAE pair had to retire from the race with a gear case problem, has shown that anything is possible.

The Abu Dhabi GP takes place at 3.30pm on Friday. For more information on the XCAT World Series, log on to www.xcatracing.com

20 November, Dubai – There will be a familiar look to the start of Saturday’s Dubai GP with the overall UIM XCAT World Powerboating Series leaders, XDubai, back in top spot.

That’s after the pair of Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi powered to the fastest time in the race for Pole Position on Friday.

The UAE locals got the better of the early conditions as they were first in the water and their first of just two laps proved to be the fastest of the day: 2:33.93.

Their teammates, Dubai, were second quickest, over two seconds back, with Salem Al Adidi and Eisa Al Ali securing a time of 2:36.34.

The team currently placed second in the overall standings, Team Abu Dhabi (Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori), will start Saturday’s race in third after a fastest lap of 2:36.51. And completing the all-important top gate for the race will be the Italian T-Bone Station (Giovanni Carpitella and Luca Fendi) and France’s Yachts (Francois Pinelli and Saul Bubacco).

Saturday’s Dubai GP will take place at 2pm and entry is free of charge to the general public with plenty of exciting activities on offer both on and off the water.

Speaking about Friday morning’s racing, Bin Hendi explained: “We knew the sea conditions were going to change so that was our plan to get it done early. We said we were going to go out and do one lap and make the best of it and we managed to get the best time.

“We are very happy. The sea conditions were on our side. The set-up and everything was good and that showed – going out first, getting pole and we’re looking forward to the race tomorrow.”

Discussing the expected conditions for Saturday’s race, Bin Hendi added: “As you could see with pole position, the conditions were changing every five minutes. The waves are coming in from the deep sea. It’s coming in now and I think it’s going to get rougher tomorrow.”

Victory Team manager Ragesh Elayadeth, who looks after both Dubai boats, said: “I’m very happy for XDubai and I’m equally happy for the Dubai boat. They are learning day by day and they did a good job. I can’t ask for anything more.

“Looking at the weather forecast it seems it’s going to be a little rough but they are racers – they have to race in any situation and any conditions and they will do that.”

Speaking about the likely threat from neighbours Team Abu Dhabi, Elayadeth added:

“These boats are good boats, teams and drivers so yes, we have to do our homework and go for the race and get the result – that’s it.

“We just have to concentrate on our job. We can’t worry about what others do.”

Meanwhile, later in the afternoon there was more glory for the XDubai team as they took top honours in the Dubai Duty Free Speed Cat Run. That’s after defeating T-Bone Station in the final head-to-head showdown of the day.

Al Zaffain and Bin Hendi had reached the final by defeating Swecat (Mikael Bengtsson and Erik Stark) in the opening round before getting the better of Six (Tomaso Polli and Matteo Nicolini) in the second. They then went on to beat Team Abu Dhabi in the semifinal.

About the UIM XCAT World Powerboat Series:

XCAT, short for extreme catamaran, is one of the most challenging and extreme forms of powerboat racing in the world with the largest international contingent and greatest number of teams competing at spectacular locations across the globe.

The XCAT World Series has experienced phenomenal growth in the last two years and 2015 has seen ever further expansion with seven races set to take place in four different countries – including the exciting new venues of Australia and Portugal.

  • There are two people in the cockpit during the races – one is the driver and one the throttleman

  • Communication between the two is vital – otherwise it could result in flipping the boat

  • There is an escape hatch at the bottom of the boat so that if it does flip, the pilots are able to escape

  • There are usually between 12 and 15 boats competing in each race which makes it very tricky for the boats travelling behind the front-runners as they have to deal with the spray and waves

  • Each lap of an XCAT race course is 3.2 nautical miles with boats completing a minimum of 10 laps and a maximum of 16 in any given race

  • The WPPA (organisers and promoters of the Series) have created and developed a unique containerised system in order to be able to transport the competing boats and other equipment in the most efficient manner. This new system, referred to as ‘Cat in a box’ enables the entire Series race set-up including hospitality facilities and a race village, as well as all the boats, to be transported globally within the confines of standard shipping containers

  • Safety is a top priority for the WPPA and the XCAT safety crew are always on hand at each race providing top-notch safety and rescue services

  • If an accident should occur during the races, they are on the scene as soon as possible to conduct the rescue and ensure all pilots are safe

  • In order to do that, their full staff contingent consists of 24 helicopter rescue swimmers, 15 doctors, five helicopter pilots, and 10 boat drivers. The Company was born 18 years ago, and since then their competence has been proved many times across 4 continents and in 20 countries
