In under a month’s time, 19 teams from around the world will row the 3,000 nautical miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the world’s toughest rowing race, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Fergus Scholes and Jamie Glasson of Atlantic Polo, James Kayll from Row2Recovery and Dan Howie and Will North of Atlantic Row 2013 were among the nine dedicated sportsmen rowing from Battersea to Vauxhall in London to mark the three week count down. The gruelling Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge begins on 2nd December 2013 and takes approximately six weeks to complete. Participants typically row two hours on, two hours off, 24 hours a day. The race is renowned for its tough conditions and extreme physical trials, its strenuousness proven by the mere handful of participants – indeed more people have been into space than have rowed across the Atlantic. Competitors burn around 8,000 calories per day and lose around 20% of their body weight over the duration of the race. They will endure 40ft waves, tropical storms, sleep deprivation, sweltering heat and the psychological stresses of living and working in a dangerous and unpredictable environment. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is an international race and 20 teams are signed up to participate, including two injured servicemen and two able-bodied members of the armed forces, Row2Recovery; Atlantic Forces, an RAF team of two women and two men; a 52-year-old American female soloist, Team Reilly; Australian soloist, Andrew Abrahams, Adventure 4 a Cure; three professional English polo players, Atlantic Polo; two Spanish firemen, Vamos Campi; four teams from Sweden; one French rower and one soloist from Denmark, Mads Fabricius.
