Emily Gielnik has been ruled out of the Westfield Matildas’ 2018 Algarve Cup squad due to injury.
Prior to last night’s departure to Portugal, Gielnik was replaced in the squad by Western Sydney Wanderers FC forward Rachel Lowe.
Lowe could make her Westfield Matildas debut at the 2018 Algarve Cup, where Australia will meet Norway, China PR, and hosts Portugal in the group stage.
It is hoped that Gielnik will return to full fitness ahead of the Westfield Matildas’ participation in the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Jordan.
The Westfield Matildas will play their 2018 Algarve Cup pool matches in the cities of Albufeira (two matches) and Algarve, before playing a fourth and final ranking match at the 12-team invitational tournament in a yet to be determined destination.
Following the 2018 Algarve Cup the Westfield Matildas will return to Australia where they will continue their preparations for the important 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
Australia will play Japan, Korea Republic and Vietnam in Group B of the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The top five teams at the tournament will qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in France.

A 22-player Westfield Matildas squad will depart for the 2018 Algarve Cup in Portugal this evening without star attacker Kyah Simon who has unfortunately been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
Simon suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s Westfield W-Legaue 2018 Grand Final won by Melbourne City FC at Allianz Stadium, and has been replaced in Alen Stajcic’s squad by 19-year-old Adelaide United midfielder Alex Chidiac.
It is hoped that Simon will be fit to re-join the Westfield Matildas upon their return to Australia next month as the squad continues its preparations for the highly anticipated 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a camp and friendly international against Thailand in Perth.
Stajcic said that while it is disappointing that Simon – as well as another injured attacker Caitlin Foord – will not be able to travel to Portugal for the Algarve Cup, their absence will provide opportunities for other players to impress.
“We would love to have Kyah and Caitlin with us in Portugal however it is in their best interests to remain in Australia and continue their respective recoveries,” said Stajcic.
“We’ll have four games over just eight days in Portugal, so the tournament will provide a chance for all the players involved in the squad to impress as we move towards the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
“It is also fantastic that it has now been confirmed that, like last year, all our games at the 2018 Algarve Cup will be broadcast live in Australia on FOX SPORTS.
“Hopefully our performances in Portugal will continue to drive momentum leading into our next match on Australian soil in Perth, as well as the [AFC Women’s] Asian Cup,” concluded Stajcic.
The Westfield Matildas have been grouped with Norway, China PR, and hosts Portugal at the 2018 Algarve Cup. Stajcic’s squad will play their pool matches in the cities of Albufeira (two matches) and Algarve, before playing a fourth and final ranking match at the 12-team invitational tournament in a yet to be determined location.
Following the 2018 Algarve Cup the Westfield Matildas will return to Australia where they will continue their preparations for the important 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which will be held in Jordan.

Sunday 4 February 2018
Brisbane Roar FC have claimed their third Westfield W-League Premiership following a thrilling final match day of the Westfield W-League 2017/18 season.
With Sydney FC kicking off their derby match against the Western Sydney Wanderers FC thirty minutes beforehand, Brisbane Roar FC knew going into their fixture against Canberra United that a win or a draw would guarantee them top spot on the ladder and the Premiers Plate. A Sydney FC win and Brisbane Roar FC loss would have handed the Premiers Plate to the Sky Blues.
Sydney FC applied the pressure early scoring three goals in the first half of courtesy of Chloe Logarzo, Caitlin Foord and Caitlin Cooper. Remy Siemson added Sydney FC’s fourth shortly after the start of the second half, but Brisbane Roar FC were up to the challenge scoring twice in their first stanza through Hayley Raso and Emily Gielnik. Sydney FC conceded a late goal, but got the three valuable points to keep them in contention. All they could do at full-time was pray for a late Canberra United fightback.
Unfortunately for Sydney FC, their prayers went unanswered. Abbey Lloyd scored Brisbane Roar’s third in the72nd minute goal, but Elise Thorsnes replied two minutes later with a goal to give Canberra United a slight glimmer of hope. Lloyd then doubled her tally in the 90th minute to seal a memorable 4-1 victory. Shortly after the full time whistle Brisbane Roar FC were presented with the Westfield W-League Premiers Plate by Greg O’Rourke, Head of Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League.
Sydney FC will now take their white hot form into next weekend’s Westfield W-League 2018 Semi Finals when they face the Newcastle Jets at Leichhardt Oval (Saturday, 10 February 2018) with Brisbane Roar FC hosting last season’s Champions Melbourne City FC at Perry Park the following day (Sunday 11 February 2018).
The winners of the two Semi Finals will meet in the Westfield W-League 2018 Grand Final on Sunday 18 February to determine this season’s champions.
Both Westfield W-League Semi-Finals will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 501 with SBS VICELAND broadcasting the Brisbane Roar FC v Melbourne City FC match live and the Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets match streamed via SBS – The World Game website (theworldgame.sbs.com.au) and App.

Australian football star Sam Kerr has been named as the best female player in Asia at the annual Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Awards held in Bangkok, Thailand overnight.
Kerr was chosen as AFC’s Women’s Player of the Year ahead of DPR Korea forward Sung Hyang Sim, and Japanese defender Saki Kumagai.
Speaking after receiving the award, Kerr was typically modest about her achievements: "This is the third time Australia have won the award and I think we are going in the right direction with women's football in Australia,” she said. “I am very proud to fly the flag for Australia. Individual awards are not important.
"It's been a good year for the clubs and the Matildas and my top memory on a personal level is breaking the record, and the award in the US which I will probably remember forever.
"My team mates are everything, like I said, without them it wouldn't be possible. My two clubs are my everything and hopefully in the future I will have success also with the national team."
The West Australian has set a new record in 2017 by scoring in her last six matches for the Westfield Matildas. Sam plays her club football in Australia for Perth Glory in the Westfield W-League and in the United States where she was the top goal scorer for Sky Blue FC in the National Women’s Soccer League this season.

The accolades keep coming for football superstar Sam Kerr, with the Westfield Matildas ace last night named as Western Australia’s 2018 Young Australian of the Year moments after she scored two stunning goals in Australia’s 3-0 international friendly win over China PR in Melbourne.
Kerr, who resides in Fremantle and plays for Perth Glory in the Westfield W-League, will now represent Western Australia at the 2018 Australian of the Year awards ceremony in Canberra on January 25, 2018.
Recognition as WA’s Young Australian of the Year adds yet another honour to Kerr’s list of recent accomplishments, with the 24-year-old having enjoyed a record-breaking year at both club and international level.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman, Steven Lowy AM, today congratulated Kerr on her latest award, and explained that the Glory gun could add more silverware to her growing collection next week in Bangkok.
“On behalf of Australia’s football family, I would like to congratulate Sam Kerr for being named Western Australia’s 2018 Young Australian of the Year,” said Lowy.
“Sam’s brilliant performances on the pitch in 2017, combined with her humble approach off it, means that she is truly deserving of every honour that comes her way.
“Sam could become the third Australian player in the last four years to win the AFC Women’s Footballer of the Year Award when the annual AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Awards are held in Thailand next week,” concluded Lowy.
FFA’s Head of Women’s, Football Development, and Community Football, Emma Highwood, said Kerr and the Westfield Matildas are currently inspiring young girls and boys around the country to be involved with football.
“The Westfield Matildas claimed their sixth straight win in international competition in front of nearly 11,000 fans at AAMI Park on Wednesday night,” said Highwood.
“While Sam Kerr was central to the action, the efforts of the whole team on the field during the match and following the game to acknowledge the crowd ensured that supporters went home happy.
“The Westfield Matildas will play China PR again this Sunday, and we’re sure that another healthy crowd will venture to GMHBA Stadium in Geelong to support one of Australia’s most exciting and engaging national teams,” concluded Highwood.
Tickets for Sunday’s international friendly between the Westfield Matildas and China PR at GMBHA Stadium in Geelong can be purchased at www.matildas.footballaustralia.com.au/tickets.
Kick-off on Sunday is at 4.30pm (AEDT) and the match will be broadcast LIVE on both FOX SPORTS and SBS VICELAND.

The Westfield W-League’s 10th season has been launched in Sydney today – and it’s shaping up to be the best yet.
Australia’s trailblazing elite women’s football league features some of the world’s best players, more double-headers with the Hyundai A-League and extended broadcast coverage amid unprecedented interest in women’s football.
The Westfield W-League begins this Friday at 5.20pm at Allianz Stadium where Sydney FC take on Brisbane Roar FC; a clash that will include 10 current Westfield Matildas.
Football Federation Australia Chief Executive Officer David Gallop believes that the Westfield W-League gives fans the chance to see some of the world’s best women players in their own backyard.
“Sam Kerr has created headlines around the world with her goal scoring this year,” Gallop said. “She was player of the year in the Westfield W-League last season and has followed that up with a bag full of goals for the Matildas and the Golden Boot in the United States where she has also just been named Most Valuable Player in the National Women’s Soccer League.
“With Sam turning out for Perth Glory and plenty of her Matildas teammates at other Westfield W-League clubs, fans will be seeing world class action week in and week out.”
The Head of the Westfield W-League and Hyundai A-League, Greg O’Rourke, said the clubs and the players, through Professional Footballers Australia, had worked hard during the off season to finalise a new agreement which provides significantly better pay and employment conditions for Westfield W-League players.
“Football is the world’s biggest sport and women’s football is the fastest growing area of the sport here in Australia,” O’Rourke said. “We want to create a professional pathway in our game that will attract the best female athletes.”
O’Rourke said the number of Westfield W-League games on FOX SPORTS would increase from 17 last season to 27 this season. He also confirmed that two games a week would be simulcast on SBS Viceland, meaning the Westfield W-League could be seen on free-to-air television around Australia.
“Westfield W-League fans are getting more on television and they are getting more when they come to the ground with more double headers with the Hyundai A-League. With 25 double headers, one ticket gets you the best women’s football and the best men’s football.”

The tenth season of the Westfield W-League will kick-off with a bang with three of the four opening round matches broadcast on FOX SPORTS including a Grand Final rematch between Perth Glory and Melbourne City FC at nib Stadium.
Brimming with Westfield Matildas and international playing talent, bolstered by the announcement of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement and buoyed by an enhanced TV Broadcast deal, the tenth edition of the Westfield W-League is shaping up as one the most exciting and competitive to date.
Round 1 of the Westfield W-League 2017/18 Season will see Sydney FC host Brisbane Roar FC in the opening match on Friday 27 October at Allianz Stadium with Perth Glory meeting Melbourne City FC later that evening in a must-see Grand Final rematch. Melbourne Victory take on Canberra United on Saturday afternoon at Epping Stadium and the Newcastle Jets will be up against the Western Sydney Wanderers FC at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Westfield W-League 2018 Finals Series will be played on Sunday 11 February with the Westfield W-League 2018 Grand Final scheduled for Sunday 18 February.
A clear highlight of the Westfield W-League 2017/18 Season draw is the first ever Sydney Derby Double-Header on Saturday 9 December at ANZ Stadium with the Westfield W-League match kicking off at 5:00pm before the same Hyundai A-League match kicks-off at 7:50pm.
In total, twenty-seven (27) Westfield W-League matches will be seen live this season on FOX SPORTS which is ten more than the seventeen (17) matches broadcast last season.
FFA Head of Hyundai A-League & Westfield W-League, Greg O’Rourke, was proud to release the 10th edition of the Westfield W-League Season draw.
“The competition has come a long way since the inaugural season which began in 2008.
“During the off-season, we have worked very closely with the clubs, venues and FOX SPORTS to produce what I believe is the best Westfield W-League draw to date.
“There are twenty-five (25) Westfield W-League/Hyundai A-League double headers through-out the season which gives fans the opportunity to see more football.
“In addition, the kick-off times during the Summer months have been fixed at later times for player and spectator comfort.
“The biggest enhancement is the twenty-seven (27) Westfield W-League matches which will be seen on FOX SPORTS. I would to take this opportunity to thank Patrick Delany as his team at FOX SPORTS for increasing their commitment to broadcasting Women’s Football and we look forward to watching more hours of the Westfield W-League season than ever before,” concluded O’Rourke.

All available tickets for the clash between the Westfield Matildas and Brazil at Pepper Stadium, Penrith on 16 September have sold out almost two weeks in advance of the game.
Tickets are still available for the second match between the two high-ranking women’s teams in Newcastle on Tuesday 19 September. Tickets and information are available herehttp://matildas.footballaustralia.com.au/tickets.
“World-class performances by the Westfield Matildas to beat the USA, Japan and Brazil at the recent Tournament of Nations in the US have captured the attention of football fans around the world,” said Football Federation Australia CEO David Gallop. “We’re delighted to be able to partner with the New South Wales government to bring the Westfield Matildas and Brazil to Penrith and Newcastle so that local fans – and especially families with young players – can see some of the world’s best women playing locally.
“With the Westfield Matildas now ranked 6th in the FIFA world rankings, our intention to bid for the right to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, and our Westfield W-League starting its 10th season later this year, women’s football in Australia has never been in better shape. When you combine that with the fact that women’s football is the fastest growing area of the sport at grassroots level you can understand why there is such intense interest in seeing our star players perform in less than two weeks from now.”

The Westfield Matildas’ first match on home soil since winning the Tournament of Nations is nearing a sell-out with fans intending to go urged to get their tickets quickly.
Fewer than two thousand tickets remain for the Westfield Matildas’ v Brazil clash in Penrith’s Pepper Stadium on Saturday, September 16. Tickets and match information can be accessed at http://matildas.footballaustralia.com.au/tickets.
The Penrith match will be followed by a second game against Brazil in Newcastle on Tuesday, September 19 for which tickets are also available. Currently ranked 7th in the world, the Westfield Matildas’ first ever victory against the USA, followed by an emphatic victory over Japan and a 6-1 demolition of Brazil to take the Tournament of Nations title undefeated, has created world-wide interest.
Westfield Matildas’ Head Coach Alen Stajcic said the players were looking forward to continuing their run of form in front of their home crowd.
“I’m delighted that so many people are taking the chance to see the Westfield Matildas play Brazil but I’m not surprised. We have been playing outstanding football in recent matches and we hope to continue that in Penrith and Newcastle,” Stajcic said.
“We are excited and privileged to continue our rivalry with Brazil after two years of fantastic matches.
“I really urge anyone wanting to attend the Penrith game to get their tickets fast because the way it is going there will not be any seats available on the day. The atmosphere is going to be amazing. We are really looking forward to playing in front of a big crowd of our own fans.”

SYDNEY
21 November 2016
Newcastle Jets boast a slim lead at the top of the Westfield W-League on goal difference thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Perth Glory.

Sydney FC joined the Jets at the top thanks to a 2-1 win at Melbourne Victory.
Champions Melbourne City were relegated to third on goal difference, though they now have a game in hand on the pair after not playing over the weekend.
Canberra United edged a 1-0 win over old rivals Brisbane Roar on the back of Ashleigh Sykes’ lone effort.
Meanwhile, Western Sydney Wanderers collected their first win of the season with a 2-1 home triumph over Adelaide United.
