FFA to host ASEAN-Australia Football Exchange in March

Sydney, New South Wales

Football Federation Australia (FFA) is pleased to announce that it will host an ASEAN-Australia Football Exchange in the week of the Australian Government’s ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.

Partnering with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the ASEAN-Australia Council (AAC), FFA has designed a program of events as part of the ASEAN-Australia Football Exchange.

Each of the events and initiatives designed and hosted by FFA will showcase the strong relationship between Australia and South-East Asia through football and provide new opportunities for further collaboration.

FFA’s schedule of events will include:

Training Camp & International Friendly – Westfield Young Matildas & Thailand U-19 Women’s National Team:

  • A week-long training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (Canberra) and Valentine Sports Park (Sydney).
  • An international friendly match between the two teams at Leichhardt Oval (Sydney), kicking off at 12:30pm on Friday, 16 March 2018, with free admission for all interested spectators.

ASEAN Women’s Administrator Development Workshop:

  • Female football administrators working in ASEAN Member Associations will spend a week in Sydney discussing women’s football in ASEAN, and learning from Australian and international sports administrators.
  • FFA has previously had representatives from Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam attend the workshops.
  • This is the third successive year of the program, delivered with the support of the AAC.

A session of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Council:

  • The AFF Council sits quarterly in different ASEAN Member Associations, and is attended by Presidents and General Secretaries of each of the AFF Member Associations.
  • Australia previously hosted an AFF Council Session in December 2015.

FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop AM thanked the Australian Government for backing the ASEAN-Australia Football Exchange, and noted that the exchange would allow FFA to strengthen its ties with other ASEAN Member Associations.

“Football Federation Australia has been a member of the ASEAN Football Federation since 2012, and we are committed to working with our fellow ASEAN Member Associations to continue to grow the game in our region,” said Gallop.

“The growth in both the men’s and women’s game across the region continues to reach new heights, and we’ve seen that with Vietnam’s progression to the Final of the 2018 AFC U-23 Championships and three ASEAN Member Associations contesting the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Jordan this year.”

“With football commonly understood and a shared passion across the region, it demonstrates the world game’s unique capacity to bring the people of South-East Asia together – and we are appreciative of the Australian Government’s support in assisting us to do this.”

“We are looking forward to playing a central part in Australia’s activities around the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit,” concluded Gallop.

Football Federation Australia Chairman Steven Lowy AM and Chief Executive Officer David Gallop AM have congratulated Sam Kerr on behalf of the entire football community on being named Young Australian of the Year.

Steven Lowy said Kerr was a worthy recipient of the award because of the inspiration her behaviour on and off the pitch had given to tens of thousands of Australians, particularly young girls and boys.

“Sam epitomises all that is best about modern athletes,” Lowy said. “She possesses great skill and courage, she has developed her talents through years of hard work and dedication, she represents her country with pride and she is a great role model for others. On behalf of everyone in football, congratulations and well done.”

David Gallop said Kerr had battled injuries over the years to become one of the best female players on the planet. “Sam wins matches and entertains at the same time…she is a great entertainer.  And she will then sign autographs and take selfies with every single person who wants one.

“She and the other Matildas are playing a leading role in the promotion of women’s sport.  The team is now ranked 4th in the world and is a real chance to win the AFC Women’s Asia Cup in Asia.  This award will only help to inspire more girls and boys to follow their dreams.”

FFA appoint Van Marwijk as Caltex Socceroos Head Coach for 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia

FFA appoint Van Marwijk as Caltex Socceroos Head Coach for 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia

FIFA World Cup Final coach Bert Van Marwijk has been appointed Head Coach of the Caltex Socceroos for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman Steven Lowy said the Dutch coach’s experience was the perfect blend for the Caltex Socceroos’ Russian campaign.

“This is a great result for Australian football,” said Lowy. “Bert Van Marwijk is world class. He took the Netherlands to the World Cup Final in 2010, he led the Saudi Arabian team to qualify directly for this year’s Finals and most importantly, he knows a lot about our team and how they play because he studied them closely as an opposition manager in the same group. These experiences make him a compelling choice.”

Lowy paid tribute to Ange Postecoglou, the support staff and especially the players for achieving qualification.

“We now go to Russia with a battle-hardened group of players and support staff who made it to the Finals by the toughest road possible. In Bert Van Marwijk we have a manager who can achieve great things with this team. And we will ensure they have the resources necessary to give them the highest level of preparation.”

FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop agreed terms with the former Netherlands national team coach in Amsterdam.

Speaking from Amsterdam, Gallop said: “Bert was our preferred candidate to take the Caltex Socceroos to the World Cup so we are delighted to have secured his services.

“We went through a thorough and disciplined process and used internal and external experts to build up a profile of the person who would be the best fit for the task in Russia. We had a number of outstanding coaches very interested in the role but Bert was at the top of our shortlist.”

Van Marwijk said he was honoured to be given the responsibility of taking the Caltex Socceroos to their fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup Finals.

“I know a lot about the players and how the team has been playing after coaching against them for the two World Cup qualifiers, in 2016 and in June last year.

“I have also been impressed by the national team set-up that the FFA has developed over the past few years.

“I want to thank Steven Lowy, David Gallop and (FFA’s Head of National Performance) Luke Casserly for the confidence they have shown in me.

“My response to them has been that we are not going to Russia just to be competitive. I want to win our matches.”

Arrangements for the Head Coach role of the Caltex Socceroos after the 2018 FIFA World Cup will be announced in the near future.

Ange Postecoglou Resigns as Caltex Socceroos Head Coach

Ange Postecoglou Resigns as Caltex Socceroos Head Coach

Wednesday, 22 November 2017

Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has resigned from his role with the national team.

Postecoglou met with Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman Steven Lowy and Chief Executive Officer David Gallop yesterday just days after leading the Caltex Socceroos to a place at next year’s FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.

He said while he appreciated the total support he had been given by FFA and the offer to discuss a contract extension beyond the World Cup, the time had come to move on.

“This has been a very tough decision for me,” he said.  “It has been a privilege for me to coach my country’s national team, to lead them at the 2014 World Cup, to win the Asian Cup in 2015 and now to have qualified for the World Cup next year.  I said we would do it and we have done it.

"All this however, has taken a toll on me both personally and professionally. I have invested all I can knowing how important a period it was for Australian football. It is with a heavy heart that I must now end the journey.

"To coach your own country is the greatest privilege but it also has enormous responsibility. I feel now is the right time to pass on that responsibility to someone who will have the energy it requires. I owe this to the FFA, the players and the fans. I look forward to watching the team take on the World next year. I have no doubt that road ahead will have many special moments and no one will be happier than me watching and cheering from afar," concluded Postecoglou.

Steven Lowy said he and David Gallop were disappointed by the decision but respected Postecoglou’s reasons for leaving.

“Like all Socceroos fans, we hoped Ange would stay on to the World Cup and maybe beyond.  He has done an outstanding job and has always had our total support,” Lowy said. “We wish him well for the future.”

David Gallop said it was hard to think of the World Cup without Postecoglou leading the team. “It’s going to take some getting used to, especially for the players and the national team staff,” he said. “But we always knew this day would come eventually and we have been doing succession planning over the past year.

“We will not rush this process.  The Socceroos will not play again until March next year at the earliest so we have time to conduct a thorough process.  With a guaranteed place in the World Cup, I am sure we will attract a strong field of candidates.”

Football continues to be Australia’s largest club-based participation sport by a wide margin with almost half a million more participants than AFL and more than twice as many as cricket. Rugby League and Rugby Union do not make the list of the top 10 club-based sports in terms of participation.

An update of the Australian Sports Commission’s official AusPlay survey, the largest survey of its type ever undertaken in Australia, shows that 1,152,144 men, women, boys and girls are participating in football.

“Football has never been bigger or busier,” said Football Federation Australia CEO David Gallop. “It’s is the people’s game.  Wherever you are around this country, whatever your age, background or ability, there is a place for you in football.

“With the Caltex Socceroos qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ on Wednesday night and the Westfield Matildas in world’s best form, we expect to see even more people taking up football over the coming year.

“We will continue to work with our Member Federations and governments at every level around the country so that the necessary infrastructure is available.

“For parents of young children looking for a safe, accessible and inclusive sport, football is the answer – and these figures show just how many people are making that choice.  Our ALDI MiniRoos program is the most participated junior sports initiative of any code.”

Ange Postecoglou names preliminary 30-player squad for Honduras hurdle

Ange Postecoglou names preliminary 30-player squad for Honduras hurdle

25/10/2017, Australia, Soccer, Australian Football Federation, Article # 24585798

Sydney, Australia
Wednesday 25 October 2017

Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has today named a preliminary 30-player squad for next month’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Play-off (CONCACAF-Asian Zone) against Honduras.

22 of the 23 players originally selected for the Caltex Socceroos’ recent success over Syria have been picked in Postecoglou’s provisional squad for the forthcoming tie against the Central American nation.

During the Syria series England-based defender Bailey Wright and Belgium-based goalkeeper Danny Vukovic were forced to withdraw from the Caltex Socceroos’ squad due to minor injuries, however both have since returned to action for their clubs and could now be part of Australia’s final two fixtures on the road to Russia.

Mile Jedinak, Alex Gersbach, Ajdin Hrustic, James Jeggo, Awer Mabil, and Jamie Maclaren are also among Postecoglou’s extended list of options for the Caltex Socceroos crunch clashes with Honduras in San Pedro Sula (November 10) and Sydney (November 15).

While there is still a week of club football to be played before he finalises his 23-player squad for the play-off matches against Honduras, Postecoglou is confident that the group ultimately selected will be prepared to propel Australia to its fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance.

“There are a couple of weeks before the group gets together so we will be monitoring the health and fitness of every player to make sure that the final twenty-three are available for what is going to be a challenging couple of games,” said Postecoglou.

“We feel that we are right on schedule with regards to our arrangements, logistics and intelligence for Honduras, and are comfortable that the work completed and decisions made so far will help us in our quest to qualify for Russia.

“A large, vocal home crowd in Sydney for the second leg is something that everyone involved with the squad is looking forward to,” concluded Postecoglou.

To purchase tickets to the home leg at Stadium Australia in Sydney please visit www.socceroos.com.au/tickets.

Postecoglou will confirm his final 23-player squad for the Caltex Socceroos’ play-off matches against Honduras next week.

The Caltex Socceroos will begin to assemble in San Pedro Sula, Honduras from Sunday 5 November 2017.

Road to Russia – Caltex Socceroos Qualifying Path
Australia finished the Final Stage of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) FIFA World Cup Qualifying in third place in Group B behind Japan and Saudi Arabia. As the third-placed team in Group B, Australia had to play a two-legged (home and away) Play-off series against Group A’s third-placed side, Syria, for the opportunity to face the fourth-placed team from CONCACAF (Central and Northern America) in an Intercontinental Play-off (home and away) for a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Having successfully defeated Syria 3-2 on aggregate, Australia will now go head-to-head with Honduras over two legs – the final hurdle on the rigorous road to Russia.

Caltex Socceroos to take on Honduras in final round of qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup

The Caltex Socceroos will play Honduras in their final two qualification matches for the FIFA World Cup in Russia next year.

After last night’s victory over Syria, Australia’s opponent in the two-legged intercontinental play-off was decided in matches played today in Central and North America.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) awaits official confirmation of the fixture details from FIFA, however the matches will take place during the international window next month. The return leg will be played at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Ticketing details will be released in the coming days.

FFA Chief Executive David Gallop said he was expecting a big crowd in Sydney for the second leg of the must-win tie.

“The whole nation is going to be behind the team when they play in Honduras but our FIFA World Cup fate will be decided right here in Sydney. We have every confidence that Ange (Postecoglou) and the players can get the job done. It will be a massive night for football and the wonderful memories of the Uruguay game in 2005 will get the turnstiles spinning,” said Gallop.

Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Postecoglou said detailed preparations for the matches were already well advanced.

"I am aware of reports today suggesting that I will step down as Head Coach of the Socceroos next month. My sole focus is on preparing the team for our final two qualifying matches. I will not let anything compromise the team’s journey on getting to a fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup,” said Postecoglou.

Gallop said he had spoken to Postecoglou about the reports and agreed the focus should be on the November matches.

“Beyond that, should we qualify, there is a period of some months until the World Cup and we agreed that we will need to lock in our set up as soon as possible to maximise our preparation time,” concluded Gallop.

McDonald’s signs partnership deal with Football Federation Australia

McDonald’s signs partnership deal with Football Federation Australia

06/10/2017, Australia, Soccer, Australian Football Federation, Article # 24384409

Sydney

6 October 2017

McDonald’s has agreed a partnership deal with Football Federation Australia (FFA) that will see it become an Official Partner of the Hyundai A-League and Official Partner of the Video Assistant Referee system for the competition.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was successfully introduced late last season in the Hyundai A-League, the first top level domestic league in the world to use the technology. It will now be a regular part of the new season which begins tomorrow (Friday 6 October).

FFA CEO David Gallop said he was delighted to welcome McDonald’s to the FFA’s growing family of sponsors. “McDonald’s has a long history of involvement with sport around the world and we look forward to working with them to promote the Hyundai A-League.  Like our other commercial partners, they recognise the growing power of football in Australia’s commercial landscape.”

McDonald’s Chief Marketing Officer Jenni Dill said: “The Hyundai A-League has become a major competition in Australian sport and we believe it will continue to attract more fans and more viewers.  McDonald’s is excited to be getting involved and looks forward to a successful partnership with the FFA.”

FFA’s Head of the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League, Greg O’Rourke, said that the VAR would help to correct occasional human errors that were an unavoidable part of any sport.

“Referees have been the only individuals that have not been able to benefit from the use of video replay technology,” he said. “VAR changes that and adds to the spectacle of the game, both at the ground and on broadcast.”

O’Rourke said the VAR system will be used by the referees to provide assistance in four (4) categories of match-changing decisions/incidents:

• Goal / no goal decisions

• Penalty / no penalty decisions

• Direct red cards (not 2nd yellow cards)

• Mistaken identity

In addition, FFA Director of Referees Ben Wilson today officially announced the match official panels for the upcoming Hyundai A-League, Westfield W-League and Foxtel Y-League 2017/18 Seasons.

“We are very happy with the match official panels that we have selected for the upcoming seasons,” said Wilson.

“There are plenty of experienced panel members returning and also some new faces that we look forward to seeing perform at the elite level.

“During the off-season we have also been working with the Hyundai A-League match officials to enhance the use of the VAR system based on our experiences from the previous season,” concluded Wilson
