AUSSIE RIVALRIES SET TO INTENSIFY AS HOME AND AWAY DERBIES RETURN TO VODAFONE SUPER RUGBY IN 2018

SEPTEMBER 21, 2017

SANZAAR has today released the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby season draw which features the return of home and away ‘derbies’ for the first time in three years.

Under the new 15-team format for 2018, each Australian team will face off with each of their Australian Conference rivals at home and away, intensifying the battle for the all-important Australian Conference title which offers a guaranteed finals berth.

Four Australian teams – New South Wales Waratahs, Queensland Reds, Melbourne Rebels and the Brumbies, will be joined by the Sunwolves of Japan in the five-team Australian Conference.

The 2018 season will officially kick off on February 17 in South Africa, however all eyes will be on AAMI Park the following week when the Rebels host the Reds in the first Aussie showdown on Friday, February 23.

The following day, 2017 Australian Conference champions the Brumbies meet new Conference rivals the Sunwolves in Tokyo, before the Waratahs take on South Africa’s Stormers at Allianz Stadium.

The rest of the draw is littered with highlights, including a bumper Easter weekend featuring a Good Friday clash between the Rebels and Hurricanes at AAMI Park and an Easter Saturdayblockbuster between the Brumbies and Waratahs at GIO Stadium.

A fortnight later, in Week 9, Australian teams will feature in a “Super Saturday” triple-header which culminates in the traditional rivalry between the Waratahs and Reds on Saturday, April 14.

Week 11 falls on the weekend following ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand and the feature match of the round sees the Brumbies tackle the defending champion Crusaders at GIO Stadium on Saturday, April 28. Earlier that day, Queensland host 2017 Finalists the Lions in an afternoon clash at Suncorp Stadium.

In another great development for Australian Rugby fans, only four matches involving Australian teams will kick off between the hours of midnight and 3:30am Australian (eastern) time throughout the course of the season.

ARU CEO Bill Pulver said: “Super Rugby in 2018 will reignite the local rivalries here in Australia with home and away derbies returning and fans will be treated to more matches in better timeslots, so this new competition format is a big win for Rugby fans in Australia.

“The Brumbies are the defending Australian Conference champions but they will face a stern challenge from all other Australian teams after a busy off-season across the country.

“Once again it’s going to be an incredibly close race to the finish and we are all hoping to see one of our Australian teams on the podium holding aloft that trophy come the first weekend in August.”

Vodafone Super Rugby will once again feature an eight-team, seven-match Finals Series which kicks off on the weekend of July 21-22. The new champion will be crowned after the Vodafone Super Rugby Final on the weekend of August 4-5.

Vodafone Consumer Business Unit Director Ben McIntosh said: “With local derbies making a comeback, we’re more excited than ever to be involved with Vodafone Super Rugby for a second season. From the field to the small screen, we can’t wait for kick-off in 2018.”

FOX SPORTS will be home to the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby season with LIVE, ad-break free during play and HD coverage of every match spearheaded by a commentary team of former Wallabies and Rugby experts.

ARU STATEMENT REGARDING SENATE INQUIRY

SEPTEMBER 7, 2017

Whilst it understands Western Australia’s disappointment following the outcome of Tuesday’scourt decision, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) is surprised to learn that it will be subject to a senate inquiry in relation to the future of Australian Rugby.

ARU Chairman, Cameron Clyne said: “We have acknowledged that we have been limited in the level of information we could provide publicly on the Super Rugby process while we were subject to court action commenced by RugbyWA, and to confidentiality obligations in the relevant agreements between the ARU and RugbyWA.

“Following Tuesday’s result in the NSW Supreme Court, we were able to address this to a significant degree by providing a detailed record of the process via a statement and supporting documentation, which remains available for public consumption on the ARU website.

“I can also confirm that ARU has been in dialogue with the Federal Government, through the Minister for Sport, Greg Hunt MP, during this process and has discussed the reasons for moving from five Super Rugby teams to four.

"ARU has absolutely no concerns about the integrity of the process that has been run.

“While it is a highly unusual step for Government to single out a national sporting organisation for this type of process, particularly when there is no policy or legislation under review in relation to Australian Rugby, we welcome the opportunity to address the committee.

“To-date the ARU has enjoyed a productive working relationship with the Federal Government. Throughout, the Government has made it abundantly clear that it does not want to interfere with the way in which sports operate and make decisions, but it appears this stance has now changed - this is a concern for the entire industry.

“Certainly there will be questions asked as to whether an inquiry like this is a suitable use of public funds.”

ARU will make no further comment on the matter at this time.

The ARU statement and supporting documentation relating to the future of Super Rugby in Australia (including a chronology of events) can be viewed here.

    RUGBYWA MEDIA RELEASE

   Tuesday, 5 September 2017

RUGBYWA STATEMENT

Having now watched the ARU Chairman address the media today it is important that RugbyWA strongly contest the content of this interview.

Mr Clyne mentions that on August 2nd the ARU invited RugbyWA to make final offer to the ARU and said that RWA did not come back with anything substantive. This is not the fact.

On 4th August RWA sent a long letter to the ARU which along with much else made the following points:

  • Finance behind RWA is certain not uncertain.

  • Though we have no visibility on the balance sheets of other franchises we highly doubt that there is another Australian franchise that has $2million cash at hand ready to contribute to its rugby program over and above traditional sources of income.

  • Before Mr Andrew Forrest’s recent commitment, we have always been highly confident (primarily through the feedback of those registrants who have not converted) that once we are able to announce that the Western Force will remain in the Super Rugby Competition we will convert a further minimum of $3million through our "Community Ownership model to reach our minimum target of $5 million.

  • With Mr Forrest’s support, this is an entirely different prospect.  We move from “highly confident” to “absolutely certain”.

  • To put this into context Mr Forrest (AO) has advised us, you and the Rugby community in the most public way possible that he will “Do What it takes” to save the Western Force and ensure our long-term stability.

  • We consider this is a verbal contract. This is a man who recently donated $400million to a wide range of social and scientific causes. The largest philanthropic donation by a living Australian. Mr Forrest and his team have carefully considered how they can best support the Western Force and have endorsed the Own The Force campaign by designing a revision to our current plan that will basically double the outcome by uniquely assisting new members who may not have been able to afford “up-front payments” in financing their membership.  Mr Forrest is a man of his word, a very proud West Australian and someone who constantly remains in the National Spotlight.

  • With respect, you should not be doubting his word or his intent. Own The Force is only one avenue available to him.  “

Mr Clyne also indicates that the ARU was and continued to be in dialogue with RugbyWA. This misrepresents the position in that themajority of dialogue was initiated by the ARU's lawyers. If fact, we understand that Andrew Forrest sought to meet with the ARU on numerous occasions both before and after August 4th.

These meetings were declined by the ARU Chairman with the only meeting occurring in Adelaide 22nd August where, despite promisingtwo days earlier that the ARU were prepared to negotiate a reinstatement of the Western Force, the ARU Chairman again rebuffed Andrew Forrest's generous offer of both underwriting the Western Force and support Australian Rugby to the tune of $50 million.

Our view remains that since receiving legal advice in February the ARU Chairman had formed the view that the Western Force were the only team that could legally be removed from the competition. For the ARU to suggest that there was an objective and transparent process, evaluating the merits of both the Force and the Rebels, was misleading and disrespectful to the Western Australian and Victorian Rugby Unions.

It is now time for all the Australian member unions to hold the ARU Board accountable for the misinformation and lost opportunity to Australian rugby.

Should the Australian member unions not be prepared to hold the ARU Board accountable for the misleading process, the loss of an Australian Super Rugby side and $50million then we are confident the proposed Senate enquiry will.

ARU STATEMENT ON THE FUTURE OF SUPER RUGBY IN AUSTRALIA

SEPTEMBER 5, 2017

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) welcomes today’s decision in the NSW Supreme Court, which provides legal certainty to all stakeholders.

ARU will contact the individuals affected by this decision to continue to offer support, including players and staff of the Western Force.

Throughout its process to reduce one Super Rugby team ahead of the 2018 Super Rugby season, ARU has been restricted from providing certain information while it has been subject to court action.

Some of this information related to the basis on which the decision was made to discontinue the Western Force Super Rugby licence.

During the process RugbyWA was provided several opportunities to provide its business case, right up until ARU’s call for this information on August 2, but had failed to provide any evidence-based representations upon which the Board could rely in reaching a final view on the future viability of the Western Force.

The Board’s decision was heavily deliberated. At its core was the need to recalibrate the ARU’s investment in the game to meet the needs of a shifting sports landscape and to support its strategy to “make Rugby a game for all”.

Rugby is being challenged, as are all sports in Australia, by increased competition for spectators, viewers and participants, especially amongst young Australians.

The future health of Rugby will be dependent upon the game’s ability to attract more young boys and girls into the sport as players, spectators and fans.

To meet this challenge, tough decisions have had to be made to ensure that community and development programs are adequately funded to support the growth of the game including schoolboys, junior and women’s Rugby.

As communicated at the beginning of this process, ARU has invested almost $28 million of unbudgeted, additional “support funding” to Super Rugby teams over the past five years, which has severely limited its capacity to fund these important areas of the game.

Australian Rugby had pushed hard to retain five teams for several years, but it had simply become too great of a burden on its resources.

The reduction of one team from Super Rugby will also address an alarming decline in Super Rugby team performance since 2006, which has directly impacted the bottom line of the National and State Unions.

Reducing one team will provide a greater choice of talent for Super Rugby teams, create more competition for positions within each team, improve roster depth at each team, and will positively impact the player market with greater competition for contracted positions.

The following supporting documentation sets out to provide a more detailed view of the considerations that informed the final decision of the ARU Board.

Notwithstanding today’s court decision, ARU is committed to keeping Rugby strong in the West and to provide a clear pathway to the elite level of the game in men’s and women’s Rugby for junior players in Western Australia.

ARU is also in active discussions with its State and Territory Member Unions about opportunities to provide Rugby content in Western Australia from the 2018 season.

ARU STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO ANDREW FORREST MEDIA CONFERENCE

ARU STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO ANDREW FORREST MEDIA CONFERENCE

30/08/2017, International, Rugby, Superxv Rugby, Article # 23941719

ARU STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO ANDREW FORREST MEDIA CONFERENCE

AUGUST 30, 2017

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has rejected claims made by Perth businessman Andrew Forrest today that its process to reduce one Australian team from Super Rugby has been a “charade” and that a decision was made to exit the Western Force “in February”.

ARU Chairman, Cameron Clyne said: “The decision to discontinue the Super Rugby licence of the Western Force was made by the ARU Board on August 11, 2017 and this was communicated publicly immediately when that decision was made.

“For the record, RugbyWA has been provided several opportunities to put its best business case for the Western Force to the ARU Board, from April 10 right up until our final request for this information on August 2, 2017.

“Andrew, in his press conference this morning, referred to a document or documents which indicated that a decision had been made to remove the Western Force in February. This was not the case and there are no documents which contain this information.

“At various stages of this process, the ARU Board has requested recommendations and information from ARU management to assist with making its decision.

“I can only assume that Andrew has been provided with a document that contains some of the analysis that was undertaken by ARU management at the request of the Board, to assess the many implications and considerations for exiting each of the three teams we originally assessed, which included the Brumbies, Melbourne Rebels and Western Force.

“As we have previously announced, there was an extensive analysis conducted on each of these teams and one of the key issues we assessed was the legal risks associated with any decision to exit one of those teams.

“These legal risks were factored into our decision but the Board still had options outside of legal avenues to pursue its course to remove a team.

“At its April 9, 2017 meeting in Sydney, the ARU Board decided to further assess those options for the Force and the Melbourne Rebels.

“Around this date, ARU commenced discussions with the Melbourne Rebels owners with a view to assessing the option of acquiring the Melbourne Rebels licence. These discussions were confidential so we are not able to disclose the exact details. The Western Force Super Rugby licence was owned by ARU.

“Very late in the process, and at a time after the ARU Board requested a “best and final” position from the Western Force, the Melbourne Rebels licence was sold to the Victorian Rugby Union. Our discussion with the Melbourne Rebels owners had continued until this date, August 4, 2017.

“It was after this event, on August 4, 2017 that ARU did not have the option to acquire the Melbourne Rebels licence.

Clyne reaffirmed that Mr Forrest’s offer of support came too late in the process for it to be a factor in the Board’s decision.

“Andrew’s offer, which was incredibly generous, was not made until after the Board’s decision had been made.”

SUPER RUGBY DRAW ANNOUNCED FOR 2017

AUSTRALIAN RUGBY UNION MEDIA UNIT

SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

After a global audience of more than 50 million viewers tuned in to watch the 2016 Super Rugby season and over 2 million fans attended the matches, the 2017 Super Rugby competition will kick off on Thursday 23 February 2017 when the Melbourne Rebels host the Auckland-based Blues at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

During the 17-round season, the five Australian Super Rugby teams – the Brumbies, NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds, Melbourne Rebels and Western Force – will each play six matches in the Australian conference and nine matches against teams in other conferences.

In the four-conference tournament structure, which follows the same 2016 format, each team will play 15 matches and have two byes.

The season starts with home games for the Queensland Reds at Suncorp Stadium, Melbourne Rebels at AAMI Park and the NSW Waratahs who play the Western Force at Allianz Stadium. The 2016 Australian conference winners the ACT-based Brumbies will kickstart their year with their match against the Canterbury-based Crusaders in Christchurch.

During the season, seven Australian home games played at family-friendly afternoon time slots will give fans young and old the chance to cheer on their favourite Super Rugby teams. TwoThursday night matches, which will take place in Round 1 (Melbourne Rebels v Blues) and Round 2 when the Western Force host the Queensland Reds in Perth at nib Stadium, will also extend the ‘Super Rugby weekend’ for fans.

Fifteen Australian derbies will be played on home soil next year, with the contest between 2016 conference champions the Brumbies and NSW Waratahs set to light up Allianz Stadium when they do battle in Round 4. In Round 10, Australia’s most historic rivalry will write another chapter when the Queensland Reds take on the NSW Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium.

Trans-Tasman rivalries will again pervade the competition, with the New Zealand teams looming once again as mighty challengers. 2016’s big improvers the Melbourne Rebels will be the first Australian team to take on 2016 champions the Hurricanes in their Round 2 contest.

A rugby-filled Easter Saturday will see the Queensland Reds kick off at 3.05pm against the Kings at Suncorp Stadium, followed by the Melbourne Rebels v Brumbies derby at 7.45pm at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

ARU CEO Bill Pulver said: “Super Rugby is an unrivalled competition in the excitement and quality rugby it provides for fans. This year the average number of points scored per match increased from 45.3 in 2015 to 52.0 while tries were up from 5.1 to 6.4 per match.

“The 2017 season will be momentous for many of our Australian teams. The Queensland Reds will welcome home Quade Cooper, Stephen Moore and veteran George Smith, while the Western Force have a new Head Coach in Dave Wessels and some key players which have gained significant experience with the Wallabies through the 2016 international season.

“The Melbourne Rebels pushed the Brumbies and Waratahs all season in 2016, and the meteoric rise of players such as Sean McMahon and Reece Hodge shows their program is building quality players and a team that can push for finals in 2017.

“Last year’s conference champions, the Brumbies will have a new-look team in 2017 as they aim for a fifth consecutive finals appearance, while the Waratahs blooded some terrific young talent in 2016 and will be hungry to get back to the post-season after narrowly missing out this year.

“Nine new Wallabies have already been capped this winter following their standout performances in the Super Rugby season, and I’m sure plenty more stars will be unearthed next year too.”

Continuing Super Rugby’s foray into Asia, the competition will travel to Singapore for the first time in Round 2, when Japan’s Sunwolves take on the Southern Kings, and will return another two times in Round 5 and Round 13.

The 2017 Super Rugby finals series will start on 21 July with the final set for 5 August. A June Test window remains in the draw, to accommodate for international Tests, particularly the British & Irish Lions series in New Zealand.

Key notes
Super Rugby’s first Thursday night game will kick off the season at AAMI Park, with Melbourne Rebels playing Sonny Bill William’s team, the Blues, while the Western Force will host the Reds for the second Thursday-night clash in Round 2 at nib Stadium, Perth.

The opening round features three matches on Aussie soil with the NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds and Melbourne Rebels starting their seasons at home.

2016 Australian Conference winners, the Brumbies kickstart their 2017 campaign against the Crusaders in Christchurch.

Seven Australian home games played at family-friendly afternoon time slots will give fans young and old the chance to cheer on their favourite Super Rugby teams.

The competition travels to Singapore three times in 2017, continuing Super Rugby’s foray into Asia following the inclusion of Japan’s Sunwolves in 2016.
