New Zealand Rugby congratulates Emma Jensen on 100th milestone

Emma Jensen is set to become the first player to mark 100 matches in the women’s national provincial championship when she takes the field for the Auckland Storm at Eden Park on Saturday.

The former Black Ferns halfback has played 24 matches for Waikato and Saturday sees her 76th match for the Auckland Storm, against traditional rivals Canterbury (kick off 12.05pm).

Jensen played in the first season of women’s provincial championship rugby in 1999 and spent five seasons with Waikato before traveling up State Highway One for work commitments.

The three-time Women’s Rugby World Cup winner has also won 10 provincial titles with Auckland.

New Zealand Rugby Union Chief Executive Steve Tew said Jensen’s milestone is one to be celebrated.

“Emma has contributed much to the women’s game in an impressive first class career that has spanned almost two decades,” said Tew.

“She is known for her skills as a quick, strong and clever halfback and has always added real energy to her teams. Her passion and commitment to rugby is testament to the many fantastic highlights she has already achieved.

“To be the first woman to reach this milestone is significant and we congratulate her and wish her the best for Saturday and the rest of the season.”

Jensen has 49 Black Ferns Test caps to her name and earlier this year celebrated 150 matches for her club side College Rifles.

Auckland Rugby CEO Jarrod Bear said Auckland was proud to have Jensen in blue and white.

“This is a tremendous achievement to play 100 provincial matches. Auckland Rugby thanks Emma for her great contribution not only to the Auckland Storm but in positively promoting greater female participation in rugby,” said Bear.

Jensen said she was proud of the milestone and looking forward to Saturday’s match.

“To be playing at the top level for such a long time is pretty special; hopefully it can be something other players aspire to,” said Jensen.

Jensen is set to be joined in the 100-club later in the season by teammate Fiao’o Fa’amausili who currently has 97 provincial caps.

    Sevens legend DJ Forbes retires

DJ Forbes, the most capped player in world sevens history, has announced his retirement from the game today.

Forbes’ illustrious career with the All Blacks Sevens started 11 years ago in 2006 and since then he has amassed a record 89 World Series tournament appearances and played in a record 512 World Series games, scoring 153 tries. He was on the winning side in 26 tournaments and notched up six World Series victories. He has also captained New Zealand to gold at a Commonwealth Games and the Sevens World Cup.

Forbes was named International Sevens Player of the Year in 2008 and has been the recipient of the Richard Crawshaw Memorial Trophy for Sevens Player of the Year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards in 2007, 2008 and 2014, the most wins by any player.

DJ Forbes said after 11 years in the national squad it was time to move on to other challenges.

“The last 11 years with the All Blacks Sevens has been an awesome ride that I’ve loved every minute of. I’ve built life-long friendships with players, coaches and management and got to experience the high of success on the international stage. I want to thank all those who have helped and supported me on the way, from club level right through to the national side.

“Sevens means you’re on the road a lot. While I got to travel and represent my country, sacrifices were made at home. I want to thank my wife and kids and family and friends for their enormous support, and I am looking forward to being around a lot more.

“Today starts my new life after footy. I’m looking forward to finishing my Master’s degree, which examines what makes successful coaching from an athlete’s perspective, and my goal is to one day coach a national side.”

New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Tew said DJ Forbes’ retirement was the end of an era.

“DJ has been an integral part of an incredibly successful All Blacks Sevens outfit that defined the way the game is played. His natural leadership saw him take on the captaincy of the team during a period of triumph and his knowledge of sevens and calm wisdom will be sorely missed.

“His success in sevens is without peer. He’s been a consistent and dominant force on the world stage for so long, achieving nearly every title and accolade sevens has going during his playing career.

“DJ is one of the great guys of rugby. Dominant on the field and respected off it. He’s has been a great ambassador both nationally and internationally for sevens and has given a huge amount of his time help grow its profile. We are sad to see him go but wish him and his family all the best for the next stage in his career.”

All Blacks Sevens Head Coach Clark Laidlaw said DJ was an inspiration to the team.

“DJ’s contribution to sevens has been as big as any. His consistency of performance over a long-playing career is unheralded. What impresses me is DJ’s ability to always play at his very best and lead by example, regardless of the circumstances. We wish him the best of luck for the future.”

Congratulations All Blacks - World Rugby Team of the Year
    •    All Blacks – Team of the Year
•    Beauden Barrett - Player of the Year
•    Steve Hansen – Coach of the Year

Following an historic year in which the All Blacks won the Investec Rugby Championship, retained the Bledisloe Cup for the 14th year in a row and set a world record for tier one nations of 18 consecutive Test victories, New Zealand rugby has been honoured at the World Rugby Awards in London.

The All Blacks have won Team of the Year for the seventh straight year, 47-Test first five-eighth Beauden Barrett has won Player of the Year for the first time and Steve Hansen picked up Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

New Zealand Rugby Chairman Brent Impey congratulated the All Blacks on their success.

“2016 has been another outstanding year for the All Blacks. New Zealand Rugby and all their fans are rightfully proud of the team's ongoing success. This is an outstanding group of athletes who inspire with the way they play the game.

“Despite losing key experienced players after winning the World Cup, the All Blacks have continued to be dominant in 2016; setting the world record for consecutive Test victories, winning the Investec Rugby Championship, retaining the Bledisloe Cup and winning the Steinlarger Series against Wales. They are worthy winners of the Team of the Year award.

“Steve Hansen’s fourth win as Coach of the Year award is a tribute to his great planning, strategic thinking and the high performance culture he has instilled. It reflects many years of hard work, focus and dedication that has led to him to being the most successful All Blacks coach in the professional era.

“I also want to acknowledge the great team of All Blacks Assistant Coaches and management that support Steve to achieve what he does.

“I want to congratulate Beauden Barrett for winning Player of the Year. 2016 was a breakout year for Beauden as the leading points scorer in both Investec Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship. He’s played great attacking rugby that has been exciting to watch.

“New Zealand Rugby was well represented among the nominees at this year’s awards. Congratulations also to our nominees - to Dane Coles and Fiao'o Fa'amausili, who were nominated for Player of the Year, Ardie Savea and Anton Lienert-Brown, both nominated for Breakthrough Player,  Portia Woodman nominated for Women’s Sevens Player and TJ Perenara who was nominated for Try of the Year.

“These awards and nominations show that rugby in New Zealand is in good heart. We thank our fans wherever they are for their continued support and the part they play in ensuring rugby continues to unify and inspire New Zealanders.”

Ben Smith (Otago, 58)

The squad features the selection of 19-year-old Auckland outside back Rieko Ioane, who spent time in the All Blacks wider training group this year.  It also sees the return to the All Blacks squad of his Auckland teammate, 25-year-old loose forward Steven Luatua, who played 14 Tests in 2013-2014.  Otago hooker Liam Coltman, who has provided injury cover throughout the season, has also been selected in an official squad for the first time.

Meanwhile, lock Sam Whitelock suffered a high ankle sprain in last night’s record-breaking Test win over Australia and is expected to be out of rugby for a minimum of three weeks.  As a result, Canterbury lock Scott Barrett has been named as an injury replacement for him and will join the touring squad. Fellow lock Brodie Retallick also took a head knock in the game. Wellington lock Vaea Fifita has been named as an injury replacement and a decision on whether he joins the squad will be made this week when Retallick undergoes concussion protocols.

Several players weren’t considered for selection due to injury, including hookers Nathan Harris and James Parsons, midfielders Sonny Bill Williams and Charlie Ngatai and outside back Nehe Milner-Skudder.

All Blacks Head Coach Steve Hansen said: “Firstly, the selectors would like to congratulate all players selected for this Vista 2016 All Blacks Northern Tour.  It’s always particularly exciting being named in a touring All Blacks squad.  We welcome in Rieko who has been picked for the first time. He has shown tremendous abilities and deserves his opportunity.

“We stated at the beginning of the season that this was a year of re-establishment.  We are only three quarters of the way through the season, so one of our big goals for this Tour is to continue that re-establishment,” he added.

“The Tour gives our leaders and the team the opportunity to continue to grow, in what will be different environments and against opposition that will bring a different style of game and skillsets.  This will ask questions of us and, in doing so, challenge us.

“Younger players will get more experience within the All Blacks environment, and it'll allow the selectors and coaching group to keep working on blending the mixture of young talent with the more experienced players in our group.  This will allow our game to continue to improve and will help ensure the team is future-proofed.

“As always, coaches, players and management will also need to continue to grow their skillsets and challenge themselves to improve their core roles.”

Steve Hansen said Northern Hemisphere tours were always enjoyable experiences for the All Blacks.

“We’re looking forward to returning to Chicago, which is a fantastic city. The two Tests against Ireland will bring a unique ‘mini-series’ element to the tour, while Italy and France are always great places to tour and will throw up their own challenges.

“It’ll be our first time back in Europe since the Rugby World Cup, so we look forward to reconnecting with people up there; and it’s also the first All Blacks tour there for a number of players, so it’s going to be a great experience on a number of levels.”

The All Blacks selectors have also announced that they are revisiting the “apprentice” scheme, which they used to great effect with Ardie Savea in 2013, with 19-year-old Jordie Barrett, the younger brother of Beauden, to tour with the All Blacks.

“We think it has huge benefits for a young player.  Jordie will get all the experiences of touring and being part of the All Blacks group without the pressures of having to perform on the park. He is an outstanding prospect and has a big future in the game,” Hansen said.

The makeup of the squad, which will again be captained by number eight Kieran Read, sees 20 forwards selected (three hookers, five props, four locks and eight loose forwards) and 16 backs (three halfbacks, three first five–eighths, four midfielders and six outside backs) and has a total of 1,157 Test caps experience and an average of 32 Test caps per player.

As the Mitre 10 Cup reaches its conclusion, 11 of the provinces are represented in the All Blacks touring squad, with eight Auckland and eight Canterbury players, four from Wellington, three from Waikato, two each from Southland, Otago, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki; and one player each from Bay of Plenty and Tasman.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Rugby has announced a naming rights sponsorship deal for the All Blacks tour, with leading American private equity firm Vista Equity Partners coming on board for what will be known as the Vista 2016 All Blacks Northern Tour.

Vista, which has offices in Austin, Chicago and San Francisco, and over $26 billion in cumulative capital commitments, currently invests in software, data and technology-based organisations led by world-class management teams with long-term perspective.

“We are delighted to partner with Vista on the All Blacks' end of year tour,” said New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew.  “Vista is a successful and innovative company that prides itself on investing in winning teams and fostering a culture of excellence. Vista and the All Blacks both have a legacy of sustained success, and we look forward to working with them on the upcoming tour.”

“Vista is excited to partner with an organisation that shares in its commitment to excellence,” said Brian Sheth, Vista's President and Co-Founder.  “Working with the All Blacks is a natural partnership for Vista, and we look forward to supporting the team on their Northern Tour.”

Mini biography – Rieko Ioane

19-year-old Rieko Ioane’s outstanding pace and strength have been on full display in his 2016 breakout season. Most recently seen in a black jersey during the Rio Olympics, Auckland-born Ioane has played for New Zealand Under 20, Auckland, the Māori All Blacks and the Blues.  He starred for Auckland in this year’s Mitre 10 Cup and topped the regular season records for try-scoring (10), clean breaks, defenders beaten and metres run.

A core group of players who helped New Zealand win its first sevens Olympic medal have recommitted to New Zealand Rugby.

The eight Black Ferns Sevens players include captain Sarah Goss who led New Zealand to a silver medal winning performance at the recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Goss has signed through to 2018 making her available for Rugby World Cup 2018 in San Francisco and the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast that same year when women’s sevens makes its debut at the Games.

Other players re-signing are 2015 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year Portia Woodman, Gayle Broughton, Kelly Brazier, Kayla McAlister, Ruby Tui, Terina te Tamaki  and Niall Williams.

New Zealand Rugby General Manager Rugby Neil Sorensen said the retention of the players provided a solid foundation for the team under a new coach who will likely be appointed in November.

“We are very proud of the achievements of this team so it’s great news that a core group of players will be working hard to continue their track record of success.

“This is an inspiring group of very talented young athletes who have done much to grow the profile of the game. They have worn the black jersey with enormous pride all over the world.”

Sarah Goss said she was thrilled to be committing through to 2018.

"I love playing for the Black Ferns Sevens and having the opportunity to represent my country for two more years means everything to me.

“I’m looking forward to the World Series kicking off. As a team, we want to build on our success in Rio and now set our sights forward towards the Commonwealth Games and World Cup in 2018.”

The Black Ferns Sevens first Sevens Series tournament of the new season takes place in Dubai, beginning 1 December. New Zealand is in Pool B alongside, France, Ireland and Fiji.

•    Mix of experienced players and debutantes
•    Three Olympic Games sevens medallists included

Black Ferns Head Coach Glenn Moore has named a squad of 28, to take on the Australian Wallaroos in the two-Test series, as preparation for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 starts to ramp up.

Moore said he and his coaching team were confident they had selected a skilled squad which was strong across the board.

“We have a great forward pack and very talented backs. We don’t know much about the Wallaroos but the Laurie O'Reilly Cup is on the line and like all Australian teams they will be determined to perform strongly against New Zealand."

The first match against the Australian side is a double header with the All Blacks Bledisloe match at Eden Park on Saturday 22 October. The Black Ferns will play the Australian Wallaroos again at QBE Stadium on the North Shore on Wednesday 26 October.

Olympic Games silver medallists Kelly Brazier, Sarah Goss and Portia Woodman were included in the squad along with Black Ferns Sevens players Honey Hireme, Hazel Tubic, Janna Vaughan, Selica Winiata and Carla Hohepa (returning from injury).

The Black Ferns Sevens players were eligible for selection after playing in the Farah Palmer Cup.

“To be selected you’ve got to be the best player in those positions. That won’t change. The standard of the Farah Palmer Cup has been outstanding so we've been spoilt for choice.”

Moore said the focus leading into 2017 was on building the depth of the squad.

“Come next year we want to make sure players are putting a lot of pressure on each other for positions. We’ve selected a squad that has a lot of experience in it but there's also a young look to the side and some players have a low number of caps.

The squad also includes debutants Aotearoa Matua, a 19-year-old prop from Counties Manukau; Kristina Sue, a Manawatu halfback; and Sharnita Woodman, a loose forward from Counties Manukau.

“Everything’s being done with a look to the World Cup next year and it’s a huge motivator for the team. We're really looking forward to playing in front of our friends and family at home before we head offshore.”

asb rugby yellow.jpgRugby’s annual celebration of achievement across the sport will be sponsored by ASB, New Zealand Rugby announced today.

The biggest names in New Zealand rugby will celebrate the year’s individual and team triumphs from the community game through to the international level at the 2016 ASB New Zealand Rugby Awards on 15 December.

New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew said it was great news that ASB was supporting one of the key events in the rugby calendar.

“This is a night where the rugby community comes together to celebrate those who've made a difference in the game so it’s fitting that a high performer and proud rugby supporter like ASB is backing this great event.”

The ASB New Zealand Rugby Awards sits alongside ASB’s existing sponsorship of the All Blacks, the All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens.

ASB Executive General Manager Marketing and Communications Roger Beaumont said ASB was delighted to be the new sponsor of the New Zealand Rugby Awards.

“The ASB New Zealand Rugby Awards is always a big night in New Zealand sport, where local rugby legends mix with our favourite international players.

“The night is about acknowledging and honouring the code’s most ambitious players at all levels of the game, from teams and players at the local level to coaches, referees and Test-match players.

“ASB is tremendously proud to be the bank that backs the All Blacks, and we’re thrilled to extend our support of the sport to this auspicious event,” said Beaumont.

About the ASB New Zealand Rugby Awards

The 17th annual ASB New Zealand Rugby Awards will take place at Auckland’s SkyCity Convention Centre on Thursday 15 December.

The awards will be televised live on Sky TV’s The Rugby Channel and Sky Sport 1.
