Japan and Ireland qualify for HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series

Japan and Ireland will compete on next season’s HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series after qualifying in Dublin this weekend.

Progression to the final of the tournament in UCD Bowl was enough for both sides to ensure they will be core teams on the prestigious series when it kicks off at the end of this year.

Japan beat the girls in green in a thrilling final with a last minute penalty to clinch the win, 13-12, however Irish eyes were still smiling in Dublin with qualification wrapped up at that stage.

Ireland and Japan will join defending champions New Zealand, Canada, Australia, England, USA, France, Russia, Fiji and Spain on the 2015-16 Series. The Irish were a core team on the series in 2013-14, but for Japan it is the first time they will play in every round.

World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “Congratulations to Japan and Ireland for ensuring their spots on next season’s HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

“With the Olympic Games less than one year away, it was great to see the passion and intensity as all sides battled to be on the series. Women’s rugby is one of the fastest growing team sports in the world and the competition among teams is increasing all the time. In the run up to Rio 2016, participation on next season’s series is very important.”

The dates and venues for the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series will be announced in due course.

Decisive women's sevens qualifier to stream live from Dublin

Twelve women’s sevens teams have arrived in Ireland ahead of this weekend’s sevens series qualifier in Dublin.

The top two teams from the event will qualify as core teams on next season’s HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series circuit.

Brazil, China, Colombia, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, the Netherlands, Samoa, South Africa, Wales and hosts Ireland all hope to join the sides who retained their core status by finishing in the top nine in the 2014-15 series standings.

The two qualified sides from this weekend will join champions New Zealand, Canada, Australia, England, USA, France, Russia, Fiji and Spain on the circuit next year.

Inclusion on next season’s series would be especially beneficial to teams like Ireland and Mexico who have still a chance to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games when they take part in the global repechage next June, which will decide the 12th and final qualifier for the women’s event at Rio 2016.

Brazil and Columbia have already confirmed their place at Rio 2016 alongside New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Team GB.

The event will stream live online with fans able to log on to irishrugby.ie where they can watch all the action from the UCD Bowl in Dublin.

World Rugby Women’s Sevens Player of the Year 2015 nominees announced

  • Four nominees representing three nations
  • Winner will be selected by expert panel
  • Full Women’s Sevens World Series reviewed by judges

World Rugby has announced the shortlist for the prestigious Women’s Sevens Player of the Year 2015 award, with the winner set to be revealed at the World Rugby Awards dinner at Battersea Evolution, London, on 1 November.

After the thrilling and record-breaking Women’s Sevens World Series 2014-15 concluded in Amsterdam last weekend, this year’s nominees are: Charlotte Caslick (Australia), Sarah Goss (New Zealand), Nadezhda Kudinova (Russia) and Portia Woodman (New Zealand).

CLICK HERE FOR A VIDEO OF THE NOMINEES >>

World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “Women’s rugby sevens has seen amazing development in recent years and is one of the fastest growing team sports in the world. The Women’s Sevens World Series has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2012 and the quality of rugby on show is seriously impressive.

“These four players have been a vital part of that. They have shown the athleticism, skill, power, discipline and consistency required to excel at the highest level and they should all be congratulated, regardless of the judges’ final decision.

“With sevens’ debut at the Olympic Games happening in Rio de Janeiro next year, these are exciting times for the sport and these players will no doubt all be striving for those elusive medals in 2016.”

The World Rugby Women’s Sevens Player of the Year 2015 will be selected by an independent awards panel, which includes a representative from each of the teams on the series, the World Rugby Sevens Referee Manager Paddy O’Brien and the television commentators from the series.

This is the third year of this particular award with previous winners being Emilee Cherry of Australia (2014) and New Zealand’s Kayla McAlister (2013).

CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS ON THE WORLD RUGBY AWARDS >>

    The nominees:

    Charlotte Caslick (Australia)
The youngest of the four nominees having only turned 20 in March, Caslick is an integral part of an Australia side that reached four finals in 2014-15, winning the title in London. Shortlisted for the award last year as well, she is always to be found at the heart of Australia's attack play with her pace, strength and vision.

    Sarah Goss (New Zealand)
A natural and inspirational leader who took over the captaincy this series, Goss led by example all season and never more so than in Dubai when her final-play try snatched the title from Australia's grasp and set her side on course for four titles in a row in 2014-15.

    Nadezda Kudinova (Russia)
Russia’s impressive performance during the 2014-15 season was based in no small part around the exceptional efforts of Kudinova. The 23-year-old was a crucial cog in the team throughout the season, linking up Russia’s physical forward play with their speed out wide. With 149 points, she was among the top five points scorers on the series this season.

    Portia Woodman (New Zealand)
The Kiwi flyer scored an incredible 52 tries in the series, the first woman and only fifth player in Sevens World Series history to pass a half century. A lethal finisher, her partnership with another former netballer in Kayla McAlister was at times simply too hot for opponents to handle.

All four players feature prominently in the 2014-15 series dream team.

    About the awards:

The star-studded World Rugby Awards will take place at Battersea Evolution in London on 1 November, just a day after the Rugby World Cup 2015 final.

Now in their 14th year, this will be the first time the global rugby family has come together for a World Rugby Awards gala dinner since 2011 in New Zealand and the night will see 12 prestigious awards presented.

The awards recognise the top achievers in the game on and off the field at all levels and will include the crowning of the World Rugby Player, Team and Coach of the Year for 2015 with stars of women's rugby and sevens also being honoured.

Team GB secure Olympic qualification as Canada win Amsterdam Sevens

England will represent Team Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 after beating the USA in a thrilling "winner takes all" match on the last day of the Amsterdam Sevens.

The sun-soaked stadium in the Netherlands also saw Canada beat Australia to claim the Amsterdam Sevens trophy, after yet another epic battle between the two sides.

New Zealand ensured they would be crowned series champions on day one, and so picked up their trophy for the third year in a row in front of a fantastic Dutch crowd. The Kiwis, led by Sarah Goss, also picked up the Plate on day two while Fiji won the Bowl final.

Speaking after her team ensured Olympic qualification, an emotional England captain Abi Chamberlain admitted it was a massive day for all the team.

"It's the dream isn't it? It's probably been one of the best, and hardest, years of my life. We've worked our backsides off to be in this position and we did it. All credit to USA because they were fighting right down to the end."

It was also a momentous occasion for Canada who won their first ever tournament on the Women's Sevens Series.

New Zealand had already booked their place in the Olympics, when they qualified at the London 7s last weekend. Canada and Australia qualified on day one in Amsterdam. The remaining teams can qualify for Rio 2016 during a series of regional qualifiers in the coming months and a repechage that will take place next year.

World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: "This has been yet another fantastic end to a thrilling Women's Sevens Series and the last two matches of the day in Amsterdam demonstrated why it's one of the fastest-growing team sports in the world.

My congratulations go to New Zealand, Canada, Australia and England for qualifying and also to New Zealand for winning the series title for the third year in a row.

The intensity, speed and skill involved in the women's game is thrilling to watch, and I have no doubt it will increase even further as we move towards Rio 2016."

CANADA PIP AUSSIE WOMEN'S SEVENS AT THE DEATH TO TAKE AMSTERDAM TITLE
A try in the final 30 seconds has seen the Qantas Australian Women's Sevens team beaten in the Cup Final at the Amsterdam Sevens.

Australia comfortably saw off Russia (31-0) in the Cup Quarter-Finals and then got the better of England (26-0) in the Semi's before Cup Final heartbreak against Canada (20-17).

Qantas Australian Women's Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said: "The last couple of weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions. The highs of winning in London and qualifying for the Olympics but then losing the Final like that stings. The girls are so disappointed, but we will learn from that.

"We've won in quite a few different ways this weekend in Amsterdam and adapted so well. The competition is so fierce now that you need to plan for every eventuality - dry weather, wet weather, opposition style, and so on.

"Sharni Williams has been spectacular for us in the last few weeks while Emma Tonegato is simply a world-class player who proved that again in Amsterdam. There were some really good positives. To try and go back-to-back is very tough and we so nearly achieved it.

"It's been an outstanding season for the team, a growth year for us. We've had to contend with disappointments of the tournaments in Canada and the USA, but all athletes in sport suffer setbacks and we've come back stronger for it. We've a young squad and we are excited what the future holds over the next 15 months in the lead up to the Rio Olympics."

There were five different try scorers on show as Australia took Russia apart in the Cup Quarter-Final. Emma Tonegato opened the scoring for the women in gold after a period of patient possession before Charlotte Caslick spotted a gap in the Russian defence to extend her sides advantage. Despite completely dominating the first half, the game was still in the balance but was put to bed early in the second stanza when Evania Pelite picked up a loose ball to race clear. Ellia Green, on as a second half replacement, scored her 25th try of the season with Nicole Beck rounding things off after the full-time siren.

In the Cup Semi-Final against England, the Aussies put on arguably their most complete performance of the season. In a tense first half England, as expected, came quickly out of the blocks and immediately put the Australian try-line under threat. After seeing off the danger, the women in gold worked themselves up the field and Shannon Parry eventually powered over the line. Seconds later, quick feet from Emma Tonegato saw her dissect the English defence and streak clear to extends Australia's lead. The classy Emilee Cherry added a third before Evania Pelite ran from an outside centre position to pierce a gap in England's defence and put the seal on a thoroughly convincing display.

In an epic Cup Final which saw the lead change hands no fewer than seven times, Canada's Ghislane Landry stole the game after picking up on a loose ball in her own half to stride clear and turn the tables on an Australia side that did the same to the same opponents last week in London. Sharni Williams and Emma Tonegato (2) scored for the Australians but Karen Paquin (2), Magali Harvey and Landry all replied to give Canada their first-ever Women's Sevens World Series leg victory.

Elsewhere, New Zealand were confirmed as 2014/15 Women's Sevens World Series champions for a third time in succession, while England secured the fourth automatic Olympic qualification spot with a nail-biting victory over the USA in the winner-takes-all 3rd/4th Place Play-Off.

The Women's Sevens team yesterday confirmed its spot in the Rio 2016 Olympics, becoming the first Australian team in any sport to do so. Tim Walsh's side finish the 2014/15 Women's Sevens World Series season in third position, two points behind Canada.

Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens results in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 22-24 May:
Australia 29-7 Russia, Pool B
Australia 48-0 China, Pool B
Australia 24-7 England, Pool B
Australia 31-0 Russia, Cup Quarter-Final
Australia 26-0 England, Cup Semi-Final
Australia 17-20 Canada, Cup Final

Final placings for the Amsterdam Sevens (Top 6): 1. Canada (20 World Series points), 2. Australia (18 points), 3. England (16 points), 4. USA (14 points), 5. New Zealand (12 points), 6. France (10 points)

Final standings in the 2014/15 World Rugby Women's Sevens World Series (top 6): 1. New Zealand (108 World Series points), 2. Canada (96 points), 3. Australia (94 points), 4. England (76 points), 5. USA (76 points), 6. France (72 points)

The Qantas Australian Women's Sevens team has qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Pool B victories over Russia (29-7), China (48-0) and England (24-7) at the NRCA Stadium means that Australia have made it to the last eight in Amsterdam and cannot be caught by any of the teams outside of the top four in the 2014/15 Women's Sevens World Series standings.

Australia will play Russia in the Cup Quarter-Final later tonight (AEST).

On qualifying for the Olympics, Qantas Australian Women's Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said: "We had an emotional chat in the dressing sheds when we heard the news and it's certainly a monkey off our back. Qualifying for the Olympics is something we have been talking about for the last two or three years so I am immensely proud and overwhelmed. I'm sure there will be a few tears shed when this tournament is done."

Following the day's play in Amsterdam, Walsh said: "We got better throughout the day and in that last game [against England] we showed a lot of bottle. They are playing for Olympic qualification themselves and were strong but I was very proud with how we performed and stood up to them.

"Today we managed to use the depth of the squad very well. You've got players coming in and making a massive difference when they come on the field. To have a big squad who we have confidence in is a real pleasure from a coaching point of view."

On tomorrow's draw, Walsh said: "I say it every tournament but the Cup Quarter-Final first up is the most important of the weekend. We'll face a team in Russia desperate to win World Series points for their own Olympic aspirations so it's crucial that we are fully prepared."

Australia got their campaign in Amsterdam off to the ideal start when they clinically disposed of Russia. The Russians started strongly and despite stringing several phases of possession together in attack, they couldn't break through. With their first touch of the football, half-back Charlotte Caslick found Emma Tonegato who raced clear to score under the posts. Alicia Quirk's pinpoint kick picked out Chloe Dalton for another five-pointer before Emilee Cherry added a third try just before half-time. Ellia Green and Tiana Penitani both scored in the second half to put the result beyond doubt. Zhanna Mateeva crossed over late on but it proved no more than a consolation for the beaten Russians.

Walsh's side proved far too strong in the eight-try demolition of China. With Nicole Beck hugely influential in the playmaker role, Emilee Cherry (2), Emma Tonegato (2), Gemma Etheridge, Ellia Green, Tiana Penitani and Alicia Quirk all scored to give the Aussies a resounding win.

In a physical clash against a fired-up England looking to boost their chances of automatic qualification for the Olympics, it was the Aussies who found themselves on the back-foot early on. However, after repelling the English attack, Shannon Parry broke free of one tackle and then sent Alicia Quirk clear to score her second try of the weekend. Australia doubled its advantage with their second foray into the English 22 - quick feet from Emma Tonegato left the opposition flat-footed and the Wollongong-born winger did the rest. Emily Scarratt pulled a try back for the 2014 XVs Rugby World Cup winner after a powerful run but Tonegato scored again following a classic break from Emilee Cherry. Evania Pelite scored the 12th try of her World Series career to seal the win late on to cap what was a historic day for Australian Rugby.

In the other Cup Quarter-Finals, the USA will play Spain, Canada face off against France and England meet New Zealand.

It's still all to play for in Amsterdam on Saturday, as USA, France and England are all in with a chance of securing a spot at Rio 2016.

Saturday's quarter-finals will see Australia play Russia, England face a massive battle for the last Olympic position as they play New Zealand, the in-form USA take on Spain and Canada will play France.

Speaking after securing the third Olympic spot from the series, Canadian captain Jen Kish said: "It's been hard work and a long process for us. To finally get to Rio and have our dreams become a reality is amazing. We're going for a strong day two as we want to leave Amsterdam, not only going to Rio, but with the cup as well," she added.

Australian captain Sharni Williams was delighted to finally reach a goal that was set out at the start of the season: "It's been a long time coming...but the job is not done yet because we're here for the tournament and to get into the finals."

AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S SEVENS STAR PELITE CALLED UP FOR SEASON CLIMAX IN AMSTERDAM
Qantas Australian Women's Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh has made one change for the final leg of the 2014/15 Women's Sevens World Series, starting Friday (22 May).

Needing only to reach the Cup Quarter-Finals to ensure automatic qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympics, Walsh has recalled Evania Pelite to his squad after the 19-year-old successfully recovered from a thigh injury. Skipper Sharni Williams will win her 15th cap at the NRCA Stadium having been an ever-present since the inaugural Women's Sevens World Series in 2012.

Australia has been drawn in Pool B alongside Russia, England and China.

Qantas Australian Women's Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said: "I was delighted with how all of the 12 players performed in London. As was proved in the Cup Final, we needed to call on every one of the squad in order to get over the line which underlined the depth we have in the Women's program. I'm pleased to welcome Evania [Pelite] back into the squad - she will freshen us up after what was a tough tournament last weekend.

"However, we have set the bar very high for ourselves and it's up to us to maintain the intensity we showed last weekend. If we don't keep to those standards, we have experienced first-hand what can happen.

"If you look at each of the pools for Amsterdam, this is probably the toughest and one we won't be taking lightly. We haven't beaten Russia yet this season and they could and perhaps should have beaten a red-hot Canada in London. England are the current Women's Rugby World Cup winners and have a group of players that can beat anyone on their day. Both countries are vying for that fourth automatic spot and will be desperate to turn it on in Amsterdam to avoid what looks like being an extremely competitive regional qualifying tournament in Europe.

"Sevens World Series history across the Men's and Women's game shows it is incredibly tough to win back-to-back tournaments but I'm confident we will be ready and prepared come Friday and Saturday to create our own little slice of history."

Australia are currently second in the 2014/15 Women's Sevens World Series standings, ahead of Canada on points difference and 14 points clear of fifth-placed USA.

Contracted national team players Tanisha Stanton and Dominique Du Toit, meanwhile, will play for the Tribe in the Amsterdam invitational tournament that will run alongside the World Series tournament.

Fans can watch both days play LIVE via www.worldrugby.org/womens-sevens-series/. FOX SPORTS will once again broadcast Finals Day from 11.20pm AEST on Saturday 23 May through to 2.10am AEST on Sunday 24 May.

Olympic places at stake as series champion to be crowned at #Amsterdam7s

Three teams will book their places at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this weekend during the final round of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Amsterdam.

With the series title race also to be decided at the two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday, it promises to be highly-competitive and compelling viewing.

New Zealand became the first women’s team to have secured their Rio 2016 place via the qualification system courtesy of reaching the quarter-finals in London last weekend, and are in an almost unassailable position at the top of the Series standings.

However, the race for Olympic qualification is still wide-open. Australia, Canada, France, USA, England (Team GB) and Russia can all still secure qualification through the series, avoiding the need to negotiate the regional qualifiers.

World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “We are set for a thrilling climax to the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series with the race for Rio 2016 places still wide open.

“The quality throughout the series has been outstanding and it's a reflection of the strength of women’s rugby – one of the world’s fastest-growing team sports – that we still have six teams competing for three Olympic places as we head to the final round on Friday in Amsterdam.”
