The 33rd annual Tribute to Gary Patterson weekend invades the Stockton Dirt Track on November 4 & 5
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – October 26, 2016…The Northern California Sprint Car season comes to a close in a big way next week with the Stockton Dirt Track playing host to the two-night Tribute to Gary Patterson weekend on Friday & Saturday November 4 & 5.
The highlight of the double header is the 33rd annual Tribute to GP on Saturday, which features the only night all season long that the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series & the Civil War 360 Sprint Car Series presented by Flowmaster are showcased on the very same night. Overall in fact, it will only be the third time it has ever occurred in the 31-year history of KWS & the 26-year history of Civil War.
Each series champion will be crowned in the unique Stockton Dirt Track winner’s circle, where fans are invited to gather around and enjoy the ceremonies. Next week is also the first chance to see the new improvements that are taking place at the track. The lightning fast clay oval has had the front stretch brought closer to the grandstands, something many fans have asked for since it debuted in 2013. A new flag stand has been built to go along with the new scoreboard that debuted in July.
Going into the Tribute to Gary Patterson Paradise, CA’s Kyle Hirst leads Campbell’s Bud Kaeding by 28-digits at the top of the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series standings. The 28-year-old Hirst is looking to become a three-time series champion and join Brent Kaeding & Jonathan Allard as the third driver to reach three career titles.
Bud Kaeding won at the Stockton Dirt Track on June 18 during the Jimmy Sills Classic and hopes to snatch the title away during championship night. Clarksburg’s Justyn Cox, Hanford’s DJ Netto and Grass Valley’s Jason Statler round out the top-five in points.
The Civil War 360 Sprint Car Series presented by Flowmaster features an even closer battle at the top of the standings with eight-time series champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn leading Princeton’s Mason Moore by 16-points.
The previous three Winged 360 Sprint Car events at the Stockton Dirt Track, including last year’s Tribute to Gary Patterson have all gone to Forsberg in the familiar C&M Racing No. 7c machine. Chico’s Michael Ing, Roseville’s Sean Becker and Watsonville’s Justin Sanders complete the top-five going into the finale.
Two-time Tribute to Gary Patterson King of the West winner Rico Abreu is also set to be on hand performing double duty, competing with both the King of the West Series & Civil War Series on November 5. The 24-year-old from Rutherford has four career Stockton Dirt Track wins to his credit, which ranks number one since the facility opened. Abreu has had another phenomenal season in 2016, winning the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, the Gold Cup Race of Champions, the Iron Man 55 & the Rock-N-Roll Gold Cup among others.
The overall Tribute to GP weekend opens with championship night for the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprints, along with Dirt Modfieds, Dwarf Cars & Vintage Cars on the slate. Camping will also be available on the fairgrounds with reservations made by calling 916-370-9417. During the day on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm a car show, driver autograph session & live band will entertain the crowd behind the grandstands. Come early and make a day of it to help us finish off the season with one big party.
Tickets continue to be on sale, with reserved upper deck seats $30 on Saturday November 5 & general admission bleachers $20. Kids 10 & under are free in the lower bleachers. Box seating is also available in increments of six & eight seats. All seating during the Fridayopener on November 4 is general admission, with adult tickets $15, kids 6-12 only $5 and children 5 & under free. The front gate both nights is scheduled to open at 4pm. On Saturday will call opens & ticket sales begin at 2pm.

Known as the “Dancing Phantom from Stockton,” the “Preacher,” the “Hostile Hippie” or just simply “GP,” Gary Patterson was one of the most colorful characters of his time and captured a number of major wins in his career, including the Gold Cup Race of Champions, the Super Dirt Cup in Washington and the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ascot Park among others.
Patterson lost his life in a Sprint Car crash at Calistoga Speedway on Memorial Day weekend 1983 and an event in his memory has been held every year since. “GP” moved to Stockton, California in 1957 and began his career at the Stockton 99 Speedway. This year marks the fourth season in a row that we’ve paid honor to Patterson in Stockton.
The Stockton Dirt Track is located on the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton, California. It is built inside a one-mile horse track and boasts one of the nicest dirt track facilities in the state. The physical address is 1658 S Airport Way, Stockton, CA 95206. Bud Kaeding wins a final lap thriller at the Jimmy Sills Classic in Stockton on Saturday with the King of the West Sprint Car Series
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – June 18, 2016..In a race fitting to honor the legendary Jimmy Sills on Saturday night at the Stockton Dirt Track, Campbell’s Bud Kaeding was able to get by Hanford’s Mitchell Faccinto on the final lap of the main event en route to his second King of the West victory of the season.
Kaeding & Sills happen to be the only three-time champions in the storied history of the USAC Silver Crown Series and in another ironic tie in, Kaeding also passed Sills to win his very first 410 Sprint Car race at the Pombo/Sargent Classic in 1997.
The win was Kaeding’s very first at the Stockton Dirt Track and the 14th of his King of the West career, moving him into a tie with Jason Meyers for eighth on the all-time series list. After finishing runner up in points the last two-years he is currently locked in a tight three-way battle with Kyle Hirst & Jonathan Allard with five races complete.
“That sure was a fun one right there,” said a joyful Kaeding after executing some donuts and leaping from the familiar Williams Motorsports 0 Sprinter. “It means a lot to win the Jimmy Sills Classic and to do it like that makes it even sweeter. Jimmy was one of my favorites growing up along with my dad. I still remember racing & passing him to win my first 410 race back in the day. I can’t thank this whole ZERO team enough for all their hard work. I’m glad we could give Morrie & Katie Williams another win tonight.”
The 30-lap Jimmy Sills Classic started out with pole sitter Faccinto jumping into the lead, while in search of his first ever King of the West win. The second generation driver did a fantastic job in holding off the relentless charges of Fresno’s Cory Eliason over the first half of the race. Eliason was looking for his second career series win and looked very strong in hounding Faccinto’s rear bumper, but would drop to third on lap 17 when Chico’s Jonathan Allard made the move to get by. At that time you could throw a blanket over the top-five as the action intensified over the later stages.
On lap 21 Kaeding then shot by Eliason to claim third, before dispatching of Allard for second one circuit later. He then slowly closed in on Faccinto while driving hard to the high side through turns three & four. Kaeding continued to get a huge launch down the front stretch with the higher line and when the white flag waved he made his move. As the pair raced into one & two for the final time he motored to the inside of Faccinto and inched his way to the lead down the back stretch. That was all she wrote for Kaeding, as he charged through the final corners to take the Ed Entz checkered flag for victory.
Although disappointed Faccinto matched his career best King of the West finish in second aboard the Western Metal Company No. 37 mount. “That one definitely hurts right there,” he commented. “I hate it for all my guys, because I feel like I let them down on the final lap. But it was still a really good night for us and I want to thank everyone that makes it possible to drive this 37 car. We’ll now move on to a couple of tracks that I really like next week with KWS and try to get a win there.”
Allard crossed the stripe in third to cap a solid night in the Tri-C Manufacturing No. 3c machine. “I really wanted to give my team a win tonight, so I’m a little bummed to come home in third, but we’re continuing to get better & better,” he said. “Jimmy Sills was a hero of mine growing up and I think it’s really cool that we have an event in his honor here at Stockton. I want to thank Clyde & Marion Lamar and all my guys. We are looking forward to Watsonville & Calistoga next week.”
Sacramento’s Willie Croft made some nice moves to come home fourth at the conclusion, as did Watsonville’s Justin Sanders, who tallied his second top-five finish of the season. The top-10 was completed by Paradise, Ca’s Kyle Hirst, Hanford’s DJ Netto, Fresno’s Craig Stidham, Eliason and Penngrove’s Chase Johnson.
Mitchell Faccinto won the dash, while the three 10-lap heat races were picked off by Jonathan Allard, DJ Netto and Bud Kaeding. Willie Croft opened the night by pacing the 20-car field in qualifying with a lap of 13.522 around the Stockton Dirt Track.
A-main finish: 1. 0 Bud Kaeding, 2. 37 Mitchell Faccinto, 3. 3c Jonathan Allard, 4. 29 Willie Croft, 5. 17 Justin Sanders, 6. 21x Kyle Hirst, 7. 88n DJ Netto, 8. 3 Craig Stidham, 9. 5h Cory Eliason, 10. 68 Chase Johnson, 11. 31c Justyn Cox, 12. 7 Steven Kent, 13. 98 Sean Watts, 14. 12 Jarrett Soares, 15. 93 Stephen Ingram, 16. 00 Jason Statler, 17. 49 Mike Monahan, 18. 54 Bill Hopper, 19. 2r Richard Brace Jr.
The King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series will be right back in action this coming week. Friday night will find the tour at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway for the 31st annual Pombo/Sargent Classic, before heading to the famed Calistoga Speedway half-mile on Saturday for the Wine Country Classic.

The San Joaquin County Fair & Stockton Dirt Track play host to King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series round five this Saturday
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – June 15, 2016…Following a rain out last month the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series is set to make its first visit of the season to the Stockton Dirt Track for the inaugural running of the Jimmy Sills Classic, as part of the San Joaquin County Fair this Saturday June 18.
The event will be the ninth ever appearance by the King of the West Sprint Cars to the centrally located venue that opened in the spring of 2013. It marks the first of three stops this season, with the rescheduled Salute to LeRoy Van Conett coming up in less than a month onSunday July 10. The series will also end the year at the Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday November 5 with the 33rd annual Tribute to Gary Patterson.
This Saturday’s King of the West showcase at the track honors Hall of Famer Jimmy Sills, who accumulated 44 total wins during his Northern Auto Racing Club/ Golden State King of the West career. He also captured a number of events that are still taking place today with the series, including the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial, the Pombo/Sargent Classic and the aforementioned Tribute to Gary Patterson. Shirts will be on sale & Sills will be available for autographs under the main grandstand.
Going into the Jimmy Sills Classic a three-horse race has developed towards the front of the standings, with two-time King of the West champion Kyle Hirst holding a 12-point advantage over second place Bud Kaeding & a 17-digit advantage over third running Jonathan Allard. Hirst has captured two of the four events held thus far in 2016 and will be gunning for his first Stockton Dirt Track win on Saturday. Last season the 28-year-old came close in August, only to have Tyler Walker sneak under by on the final corner.
Along with Sills, Bud Kaeding is the only other three-time champion with the national touring USAC Silver Crown Series and hopes to chip away at the KWS point lead on Saturday. The reigning Trophy Cup winner, like Hirst, will be looking for his first victory at the Stockton 3/8 mile clay oval. Allard ended last season by winning the Tribute to GP in Stockton and has gained speed in recent weeks. The three-time KWS champ usually gets hot this time of year and that bodes well with the busiest stretch for the series coming up.
Hanford’s DJ Netto & Elk Grove veteran Bobby McMahan round out the top-five going into Saturday. More drivers expected will include Sacramento’s Willie Croft, Fresno’s Cory Eliason, Clarksburg’s Justyn Cox, Grass Valley’s Jason Statler, Watsonville’s Justin Sanders, Atwater’s Sean Watts, Hanford’s Mitchell Faccinto, Penngrove’s Chase Johnson, Gilroy’s Jarrett Soares, Coarsegold’s Scott Parker, Auburn’s Richard Brace Jr., Murrieta’s Cori Andrews, Sacramento’s Stephen Ingraham and others.
With paid admission to the fair, upper deck grandstand tickets cost just $10 & lower deck tickets are only $5 this Saturday. Adult fair admission is $10, kids 6-12 will be $5 and children 5 & under are free. Seniors, students & military with id cost $7. The front gate opens at 4pm, with first heat scheduled for around 7pm.
Career Winged Sprint Car wins at the Stockton Dirt Track: Rico Abreu (4), Andy Forsberg & Donny Schatz (3), Dominic Scelzi & Jonathan Allard (2), Kyle Larson, Willie Croft, Tim Kaeding, Kerry Madsen, Andy Gregg, Colby Copeland, Shane Golobic, Tyler Walker (1).
The King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series is held under the management of Prentice Motorsports Group, which also operates the Civil War 360 Sprint Car Series presented by Flowmaster, the Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo, the Wingless Sprint Car Series presented by Hunt Magnetos, the All Star Modified Tour and Ocean Speedway.
The Stockton Dirt Track is a lightning fast 3/8 mile clay oval located on the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton, California. The physical address is 1658 S Airport Way, Stockton, CA 95206. For information on the speedway visit http://www.stocktondirttrack.com

The King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series sanctioned Jimmy Sills Classic takes to the Stockton Dirt Track this Saturday June 18
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – June 13, 2016…This Saturday June 18 the Stockton Dirt Track will continue its season of honoring racing legends & Hall of Famers, as the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series ventures to the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds for the Jimmy Sills Classic.
In his storied career Jimmy Sills tallied a number of major accomplishments including six wins at the Skagit Speedway Dirt Cup in Washington, which ranks number one all time at the prestigious event. One of his more revered wins at the race came in 1980 when he ran the alphabet soup from the D-main to beat out the late great Gary Patterson for the victory.
In addition to that and his three USAC Silver Crown titles, the “Professor” has also scored wins at the Mini Gold Cup, the Oval Nationals, Grand Annual Sprint Car Classic, the Jayhawk Nationals, Ohio Speedweek, the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial, Tribute to Gary Patterson and countless other major events. In 1983 he captured a preliminary night at the prestigious Knoxville Nationals and went on to finish fifth in the Saturday finale.
Sills was also the all-time leader in victories at the now defunct Baylands Raceway Park and throughout the years has claimed wins in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. All in all the Elverta, California resident has been one of the most respected short track racers to ever come out of the Golden State and we look forward to honoring him this Saturday night. Sills was bestowed one of the highest honors a driver can receive when he was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2006.
“I remember Jimmy Sills being almost untouchable at Baylands Raceway when I was an announcer there,” commented past operations manager with the King of the West Series George Hague. “He practically owned the place and had so many wins in that Bailey Bros 01. Watching him get around Baylands was quite simply a thing of beauty. What he accomplished in the USAC Silver Crown Series was also something special. When you think about legendary drivers to come out of California you certainly put Jimmy Sills near the top in that category.”
The multiple-time World of Outlaws winner was also owner & operator of the Jimmy Sills School of Open Wheel Racing at Marysville Raceway and helped train many of the Sprint Car drivers still competing today. Showing skills early on in his career, the man also known as “Buckwheat” was the first rookie driver to win a main event at Sacramento’s famed West Capital Raceway in 1973. That triumph came in just his sixth career super modified start.
Sills will have event shirts for sale & will be available for autographs under the main grandstand on Saturday. In addition to the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series the new IMCA All Star Modified Tour will also be in competition this Saturday. Like KWS the traveling dirt modified circuit is held under the Prentice Motorsports Group banner and has put on a couple of great shows to begin the season in Tulare & Merced.
This weekend’s Jimmy Sills Classic is also a part of the San Joaquin County Fair. With paid admission to the fair, upper deck grandstand tickets cost just $10 & lower deck tickets are only $5. Pre-sale race tickets to be held at will call & picked up on day of race can be purchased by also calling 916-370-9417. The front gate opens at 4pm, with first heat scheduled for around 7pm.
Adult fair admission is $10, kids 6-12 will be $5 and children 5 & under are free. Seniors, students & military with id cost $7. Fair admission can be pre-bought at https://sanjoaquinfairgrounds.com/fair/ & features a $2 discount until June 14 using the code 2off at checkout.

Commemorative Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial Quilt up for grabs to one lucky person with proceeds going to benefit the NARC Benevolent Fund
By Gary Thomas
Aptos, CA – April 20, 2016…Each season there are various auctions & functions held to benefit the Northern Auto Racing Club Benevolent Fund, which uses 100% of the funds raised to support the families of injured drivers, crew members and officials that are a part of Sprint Car racing in California.
This year a very special item is being put up to help benefit the fund, with that being a beautiful quilt that commemorates the late Dave Bradway Jr., which was put together by Joanie Hartung. Bradway Jr. was one of Northern California’s favorite drivers, who ultimately lost his life in a 1987 racing accident at the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup in Washington.
Tickets for a chance to win the quilt will be sold throughout the year at King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series races, including the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial at Silver Dollar Speedway on April 30, along with various Ocean Sprints/Civil War races & other events in Northern California. Plans are also underway to set up a Pay Pal account to purchase tickets online.
The winning ticket will be pulled out at the season-ending Tribute to Gary Patterson on Saturday November 5 at the Stockton Dirt Track. That night features the championship finale for both the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series & the Civil War 360 Sprint Car Series presented by Flowmaster. Patterson was also a racing hero of Bradway’s growing up. You do not have to be present at the event to win.
The tickets for a chance to win the quilt will be sold as follows: One ticket for $2, five tickets for $6 or 25 tickets for $20. We will post on the PMG social media sites & website prior to each race that the tickets will be sold at.
The quilt showcases a number of past Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial T-shirts assembled in a beautiful display by professional quilter Hartung, who has won numerous awards over the years for her outstanding work. The shirts were donated by various gracious individuals, including Tom Norberg & the Durica family. There were also a dozen individuals that helped contribute money to build it, which was quilted by Sherrie Sherman.
Various beneficiaries of the Northern Auto Racing Club Benevolent Fund over the last number of years have include Dennis Moore Jr., Billy Sellers, Danny Faria Jr., the family of Alan Urias, Randy Hannagan, Tom Milne, Brad Bumgarner, the family of David Tarter and Peter Murphy.
Top Northern California Sprint Car teams invade Stockton for 360 portion of the FVP Western Spring Shootout March 18 & 19
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – March 14, 2016…The biggest weekend in the short history of the Stockton Dirt Track is set to commence this Friday & Saturday March 18 & 19 when the third annual FVP Western Spring Shootout takes to the blazing fast 3/8 mile clay oval.
The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event has seen thrilling finishes each of the last two-years and much of the same is expected at the double header this weekend. The FVP Western Spring Shootout is the only Sprint Car show going on this Friday & Saturday in Northern California, so if you want your methanol fix, Stockton is the place to be. Adding to the excitement this weekend will be Winged 360 Sprints competing alongside the “Greatest Show on Dirt.”
Each night for the Winged Sprint Cars pays $3,000-to-win, along with a $2000 double-down bonus up for grabs if someone sweeps the weekend. The 360 Dash both nights will also feature $1000 distributed to the top three finishers. The winner will receive $500, second place $300 & third place will score $200. Thanks to Reeve's Sand & Gravel, Sunny Valley Smoked Meats, the San Joaquin Asparagus Festival & Noceti Group Inc. for the extra Dash money.
One of the drivers on hand will be Auburn’s Andy Forsberg, who secured his eighth Civil War Series title with a dominating performance at the Stockton Dirt Track last November. The always thrilling driver set the all-time 360 track record to begin the evening and capped it by easily winning the 30-lap feature. He also started this year in victorious fashion by winning the Sherm & Loree Toller Memorial in Marysville. Forsberg will be gunning for the double down bonus this weekend, but will have to contend with multiple other drivers looking to do the same.
The driver that finished runner up to Forsberg last November at the Tribute to Gary Patterson, Justyn Cox, will also be in action this weekend. The Clarksburg, CA wheel-man is set to chase points with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series in 2016, along with a healthy schedule of additional events. Two-time Chili Bowl Nationals champion Rico Abreu looks for more Stockton glory at the FVP Western Spring Shootout March 18 & 19
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – February 29, 2016…In the brief history of the Stockton Dirt Track no driver has taken the checkered flag more than Rutherford’s Rico Abreu, who looks to defend his win from a year ago at the upcoming FVP Western Spring Shootout on Friday & Saturday March 18 & 19.
Despite competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year, Abreu will also have a healthy slate of open wheel racing on his plate, which includes a visit to the Stockton Dirt Track to take on the World of Outlaws in the FVP Western Spring Shootout. The 24-year-old will be pulling double duty at the event, also competing aboard a Winged 360 Sprint Car both nights on March 18 & 19.
“We’ve had a lot of success at Stockton,” said Abreu, who has three career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series wins. “I’m really excited about this season, having the chance to run with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is an outstanding opportunity, but still running so much on the dirt is a good thing as well. Hopefully we will have a good weekend in Stockton. It’s never easy running against the Outlaws, but I definitely have a lot of confidence knowing that we won this race last year. We look forward to seeing all the fans and hope they will pack the grandstands like usual.”
In addition to his World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win last season, Abreu has raced to three other career victories at the Stockton Dirt Track, including the 2013 Tribute to Gary Patterson with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series. He also claimed the Civil War 360 Series portion of the Tribute to GP in 2014 and captured opening night of the FVP Western Spring Shootout that same year, in what was a non-sanctioned 360 Sprint Car event.
The 2016 season has already started off solid for Abreu, racing to a big victory for the consecutive year at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This season saw a record 335 drivers compete at the Chili Bowl and Abreu captured both his preliminary night feature, along with the 55-lap finale on Saturday.
As noted, Winged 360 Sprint Cars will also race each night, paying $3,000-to-win, along with a $2000 double down bonus up for grabs if someone sweeps the weekend.

World of Outlaws champ Donny Schatz looks to continue recent Golden State success March 18 & 19 at the Stockton Dirt Track
By Gary Thomas
Stockton, CA – February 9, 2016…The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series season officially kicks-off this Friday night at the Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, where Donny Schatz opens his title defense looking to bring home an eighth career series title. Schatz & the rest of the Outlaws will tackle the Stockton Dirt Track in just over a month’s time on Friday & Saturday March 18 & 19 in the FVP Western Spring Shootout.
Narrowly missing out on a victory in 2014, the Fargo, North Dakota veteran returned this past season to claim a scintillating feature in Stockton, narrowly beating out Shane Stewart by 0.220 seconds on opening night of the FVP Western Spring Shootout. After not winning in the Golden State since 2012, Schatz had his best ever season in California last year, also scoring the Mini Gold Cup & Gold Cup in Chico, the Brad Sweet Short Track Showdown in Placerville and the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown in Calistoga.
Overall last season Schatz raced to an amazing 31 wins with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and captured the title by a massive 544-points. Included in those triumphs was his ninth victory in the sports biggest event, the FVP Knoxville Nationals in Knoxville, Iowa. Schatz will be gunning to have another career year in 2016 aboard the Tony Stewart Racing/ Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 machine. The California swing will once again play a major part in developing momentum for the rest of the season.
Winged 360 Sprint Cars will also share the spotlight both nights at the Stockton Dirt Track on March 18 & 19. Each night will pay $3,000-to-win and if a driver sweeps the weekend there is an extra $2,000 double down bonus up for grabs. It will be the eighth & ninth time that Winged 360 Sprints compete at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds facility. A number of drivers have already expressed desire to take part in the non-sanctioned 360 portion of the FVP Western Spring Shootout.
Camping is also available during the weekend with a number of great spots for RV’s on the fairgrounds. To reserve your spot contact 916-370-9417.
