GolfWA eNews - Curtis the champ!

Hello once again from GolfWA.
What a month!
We were over the moon when Royal Fremantle's Min Woo Lee won the US Boys Amateur, and now we're simply without words to describe how we feel after Cottesloe's Curtis Luck won the US Amateur -- all in the same week that Minjee Lee created history as WA's first Olympic golfer. Strap yourselves in, this is going to be quite an e-news!

Rules Corner: a non-moving moment

There's an important difference between a ball moving and a ball oscillating -- as we discovered during Curtis Luck's US Amateur final. Click here to read more.

Girls golf rises from the ashes to Rio

To celebrate the significance of the women's Olympic golf event, where Minjee Lee finished an impressive 7th, we took a trip down memory lane to see how much has changed since 1993, when WA failed to enter a team at the Girls' Interstate Series. Click here to read more.

Little WA hits the big time

When Min Woo Lee won the US Boys Amateur, the USGA called Perth "golf's new powerhouse".
When Curtis Luck won the US Amateur, he proved them right. Click here to read our feature that highlights what is so special about the WA golfing community.

Drummond Golf Women's Country Week offer!

Thanks to Drummond Golf, participants at next week's Drummond Golf Women's Country Week can enjoy some great offers while they are in the city.
The draws for Drummond Golf Women's Country Week are now online, while the men can get their entries in here.

Aussie girls shine in Rio

After a successful return to the Olympic Games, the golfing world waits in anticipation to see if its presence at the Olympics will be extended beyond 2020.
Ian Baker-Finch, Australia's team captain for the fortnight, couldn't be more in favour of golf's place at the Olympic Games.

9 News feature: Blind Faith

At the best of times, golf is an incredibly difficult game, yet those at the Australian Blind Golf Championships proved there is no obstacle that can't be overcome.
Channel Nine was on hand to cover the action at Collier Park.

Video: 2016 Aglime State Sand Greens

We had an incredible time as Mount Barker Country Club hosted the 2016 Aglime State Sand Greens Championship!

GolfWA eNews - Pennant finals fever!

Hello once again from GolfWA.
Last month we saw Mount Lawley triumph as the Division 1 Women's Pennant champions, and this weekend we look forward to crowning the Men's champion Pennant clubs.
Division 1 features a cracking match-up between Gosnells and Joondalup, with both clubs looking to restart their golden eras. Click here to read the preview.

Rules Corner: Rummy's stick & flick

Brett Rumford's latest Instagram post features an extraordinary new "shot" which raises some interesting rules questions.
It's really worth checking out in our latest Rules Corner, just don't get mad when we spoil the fun!

Min Woo on top of the world!

We witnessed history last weekend when Royal Fremantle's Min Woo Lee took home the US Junior Amateur title on the 35th hole in a nail-biting final.
You may also remember Min Woo's sister Minjee Lee achieving a similar feat in 2012. In fact, the siblings are the only brother-sister duo to win the US Junior -- what a family!
The great story doesn't end there -- quarter-finalist Fred Lee (Royal Perth) made it two WA representatives in the final eight, and he was on hand to record Min Woo's final in hilarious fashion.

Green pushing for Canadian title

The great performances by WA's amateurs overseas keep on coming. Ben Ferguson of The Vines finished as a finalist at the Scottish Boys Amateur last week and this week Mount Lawley's Hannah Green is vying for the Canadian Amateur.
With one round to play, Green is 5-under par and just a shot off the lead, while fellow MLGC member Hira Naveed is T19. Good luck and keep it going!

The greatest putt on sand?

The Provincial Tournament lived up to its reputation with another absolutely fantastic week at Riverview Golf Club.
Normally the action off the course matches that on the course, but this year we can't top winner Shirley Pascoe's monster putt on the 18th green to secure the title.
Head here for the best on course and off course photos from the week and we'll see you in Goomalling in 2017!

Aglime State Sand Greens draw

It's getting close! If you're looking for the draw, the good news is we'll have it on the website on Friday evening (29th July). Look forward to seeing you all in Mount Barker.

Rules Corner: Infinite Loop

In this week's Rules Corner we get completely stumped on what appears to be a very simple Rules enquiry.
Partners share a driver during a round of 4BBB Par, only to find out at the end of the round that this was a rules violation. What is the penalty?
Seems simple right? It's not. Click here, but tread carefully!

An incredible streak continues!

We might only be up to Round 5 of our Women's Pennant competition, but we should take a moment to reflect on what has been (and may continue to be) an incredible winning streak by Lake Karrinyup.
Today is the 27th of May, which marks the three year anniversary since their last loss against Royal Fremantle in Round 2 of 2013.
There's still plenty of golf to come, including a final. Read more about the streak here, and see how your club is faring on our Pennants page.

Hartfield go back to back!

Speaking of streaks, Hartfield Country Club is working on their own after winning their second straight Men's Senior Individual Pennant title on a thrilling final day at Lake Karrinyup.
Congratulations Hartfield! Read about the final round here.
We'll have more big news to come on Monday with the finals of the Men's Senior teams pennants competition taking place at Lakelands and Royal Fremantle. Click here to see the draw.

Kiran Day enters links mode

Cottesloe Golf Club’s Kiran Day starts his UK adventure tonight, when he tees off at the Scottish Strokeplay. While he's there he'll also contest the St Andrews Links Trophy, The Amateur Championship and qualifying for The Open.
It's his second straight year of playing these events, and he says he's feeling better prepared to handle the tricky links courses and tough conditions.

Enter the Srixon Junior Championships

This year's Srixon Junior takes us to the lovely Mount Lawley Golf Club, where our (very young) defending Champions Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, 14, and Fred Lee, 16, will look to go back to back.
It's a great event with juniors of all ages with a GA handicap eligible to play, click here to enter.

GolfWA enews - Luck delight!

Hello once again from GolfWA
Thank you to everyone who came out to support another fantastic Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open. Not only was the standard of play worthy of the beautiful surroundings at WA Golf Club, we witnessed a brilliant display from our champion Curtis Luck.
Want to relive it all? You can check out the scores, videos and stories from the WA Open page here.

Rules Corner: It could have been more

Curtis Luck shot an incredible 19-under par in his four rounds at WA Golf Club, but it could have easily been 20-under if it weren't for an unexpected penalty on the 2nd green in his opening round.
How did it all go down? Click here for more.

GolfWA enews - WA Open countdown!

Hello once again from GolfWA
The countdown is on with only two weeks until the 2016 Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open tees off at WA Golf Club.
Running April 28 - May 1, the WA Open has been moved up in the calendar to coincide with the West Aussie swing of events around PGA's Pro-Am series. There will be over half a million dollars on offer during the two month stretch, and you can read more about it here.

Rules Corner: Thanks to the sponsors..

It’s clear we love our sponsors at the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open, but what happens when a sponsors sign comes into play on the golf course?
With the WA Open around the corner, we’ve decided to cover this area in our latest Rules Corner.

Minjee leads at halfway mark

Minjee Lee is playing at her usual best this week on the LPGA Tour, sitting at 10-under par after two rounds -- leading by two shots at the Lotte Championship in Hawaii.
Click here for the wrap, scores and highlights.

Chappell & Dawson are our State Seniors Champs!

Congratulations to Paul Chappell (Hartfield) and Sharon Dawson (Lake Karrinyup) who last week won the WA Senior Amateur Championships at Melville Glades Golf Club.
Read our wrap of the event here or click here to see the photo album.

Luck timing his run for WA Open

With rounds of 66 and 64 (-10) two weeks ago at the WAGC Amateur, Curtis Luck has shown he's a force to be reckoned with as he looks to go one better at the upcoming Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open.
But can an amateur upset the professionals? Click here to read more.

GolfWA enews - Perth International wrap

Hello once again from GolfWA
Wasn't it a fantastic week at the Perth International! We were lucky enough to have two West Aussies in the top ten, with Jason Scrivener finishing third and Brett Rumford seventh.
Now we turn our attention back to amateur golf, with the WA Amateur running next week at Cottesloe Golf Club. Entries are closing very very soon, but if you're quick you might be able to get your name down to play the beautiful Cottesloe Golf Club.

Rules Corner: Root of the problem

In this week's Rules corner we look back to the Women's Australian Open, and a certain shot made in the final round by eventual champion Haru Nomura.
In a bunker on the fifth hole, Nomura made contact with what the commentators described as a pine needle on her backswing -- yet she escaped a two shot penalty. What gives? Click here to find out.

Two months until WA Open!

The 2016 Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open is just two months away, played at WA Golf Club from the 28th of April to the 1st of May.

The move will ensure a stronger local and international contingent with the majority of WA's professional and pro-am events being played between April and June — offering a total prize pool that exceeds $500,000.

Click here to read more, and be sure to mark it in your diaries!

Thank-you!

Going behind the scenes at last week's ISPS Handa Perth International, it was clear that the event could not have run without the help from the volunteers.

We loved seeing so many smiling faces as the Blue Shirt Brigade went about their work. We know many of them were local golfers who subscribe to this list, so from the bottom of our hearts -- thank-you for making the event possible!

Scott back in winners circle

Our big week in golf extended overseas as Adam Scott got the job done at the Honda Classic in the US.

Congratulations Scotty! Hopefully the form continues into this year's first major.

GolfWA enews - Junior Pennants underway

Hello once again from GolfWA
We're two weeks into our revamped Junior Pennant season and we're seeing some fantastic golf from the state's top juniors.
The competition has expanded to include the regional participation with Goldfields and Bunbury Golf Clubs joining the mix for the first time.
Click here to see how your club is going so far this season.

Rules Corner: Slam-dunk damage!

Golf and basketball has its...differences, but one of the few things have in common is that we love a good slam-dunk!

Golf's very rare but highly celebrated slam-dunk can cause quite a bit of damage to the cup -- as we learnt during Round 1 of the Junior Pennant season thanks to analmost-slam-dunk from Bunbury's Nick Liebenberg.

So the cup is a bit messed up and we have two of our gun juniors all square on the 18th facing birdie putts. What happens next? Click here to find out.

Green takes on Ko again

Mount Lawley's Hannah Green has the daunting but exciting challenge of playing the opening round of the NZ Women's Open alongside World Number 1 Lydia Ko!

Not only is our gun amateur looking to back up last year's outstanding runner-up finish, she'll have to do it with a throng of NZ golf fans and media following her.

There are plenty of promising signs with Green saying she's hitting it further and better than ever. Read more here.

Entries open!

Get excited for a HUGE month of amateur golf in March with the State Amateur at Cottesloe Golf Club and the Bowra & O'Dea Women's Classic at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.

For the second straight year, the Bowra & O'Dea Women's Classic will have three divisions; the 72 hole championship, the 54 hole mid-amateur and the 54 hole seniors -- providing everyone a chance to play the fantastic Lake Karrinyup layout.
