2018 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials

This event held Feb 28 to March 3rd provided a fantastic opportunity for Swimming Australia to showcase many of the great participation initiatives we are running.  Swimming Australia worked alongside Swimming QLD and ASCTA to deliver Optus Junior Dolphins Come and Try’s on all 4 days, a Junior Excellence clinic, Optus Junior Dolphin medal presenters and club relays every night.  We had all of our technical officials that have been appointed to the Commonwealth Games on pool deck fine tuning their skills ready for the Commonwealth Games, and a TO workshop was held providing valuable upskilling opportunities to our TO network.  These activations provided opportunities for close to 400 members of our swimming community to be involved in this event.

Let's recap...

Commonwealth Games Australian Dolphins Team

The trials saw a 70-strong Australian Dolphins team selected to represent their country at the home 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

George Corones breaks World Record

Check out the story behind George Corones who broke 2 World Records at the Trials last month as a 99-year-old.  Great example of how swimming is a sport for people of all ages.

Australian Dolphins dominate the pool

A record-breaking haul of medals in the pool at the Commonwealth Games has seen the Australian Dolphins take home 73 medals made up of 28 gold, 21 silver and 24 bronze.

NSW Youth Advisory Panel - keeping teenagers in our sport

Swimming NSW’s Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) held their inaugural Youth Leadership Camp in October. 49 swimmers from 30 NSW clubs participated in team building, public speaking and event management activities, learned swimming specific leadership skills through Optus Junior Dolphin coaching, and received TO training. We look forward to having some participants join the YAP. Congratulations to the YAP team members who planned and delivered the leadership sessions!

Ideas to retain teenagers in swimming include a Saturday summer Twilight Race Party (involving races, relays and a pool party) and 4 additional Leadership Camps. Read more about the Youth Leadership Camp here!

Coming up in 2018

Some 2018 refinements to the Optus Junior Dolphins include:
  • Clearer product offerings to make it easier for product deliverers and parents when deciding what they would like their children to take part in.
  • A move away from a strict curriculum resource to fun game based learning ideas in line with the Australian Sports Commissions Play for Life learning philosophy.
  • Improved pack distribution and processes ensuring a timely and accurate delivery process.

    • Reward kids for their swimming with digital notifications and their own digital trophy room.

    • Digital interaction between the Australian Dolphins Swim Team and Optus Junior Dolphins.

Thank you!

A very big thankyou to all our club volunteers who have supported the initial year of the national roll out. Without your support we wouldn’t have had the impact mentioned above. We look forward to evolving the Optus Junior Dolphins product to ensure the sport has a sustainable and healthy future.

What’s coming up in February and March…

A Message from the President of Swimming Australia

A Message from the President of Swimming Australia

04/02/2018, Australia, Swimming, Swimming Australia, Article # 25687796

The Olympic moto is Citius, Altius, Fortius... ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’. It is about seeking perfection at the highest level of human endeavour.

Is athletic perfection possible? I believe not. Certainly not in our lifetime. We as humans are continually improving in everything we do and world records continue to fall.

When the seemingly perfect race is swum, or the perfect leap is made, a new generation of athletes take it to a new level.

That’s what make this sporting journey so fascinating, so rewarding. Yes, faster, higher, stronger.

As part of this journey, our athletes from all over the country are currently preparing for the 2018 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials that double as selection for the Commonwealth Games. This is a key test of the thousands of hours of training and commitment by them and their coaches.

A successful trials and subsequent inclusion into the Australian Dolphins Swim Team will be a dream come true for some. For others, it will be a stepping stone to Commonwealth Games glory; gold, silver and bronze.

Coming off the lessons learned from the Rio Olympics and Paralympics we made the decision to conduct the Commonwealth Games trials five weeks out from the Games, instead of the typical 3 months.

This is new for Australia. But not new for the Americans and other nations. Assuming all goes well, the same schedule will be used through to the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2020.

Network Seven will broadcast the Trials from Feb 28th to March 3rd.

Prime time. Lock it in.

Then the Commonwealth Games begin 5 weeks later with the swim program leading the way fromApril 5-10... this will be a big deal for the country. With the Commonwealth Games being held on home soil at the Gold Coast, national coverage will be at saturation level. Exciting times.

People ask me how is our Swim Team going? I say, we will know more by the end of this month.

Australia is proud of our sporting heritage. The country demands we do well. It has been said our Swim Team is of national importance. That is true.

The pressure will be on. We make no apologies about that. That’s how we like it.

And yes, ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’....that is the dream, that is our world.
