Grand Final re-match to kick off 2015 Buildcorp NRC

To celebrate the two-month countdown before the second Buildcorp National Rugby Championship kicks off, the Australian Rugby Union has announced the fixture schedule for the 2015 season.

The 2015 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship will once again visit regional areas across the Eastern seaboard in New South Wales (Tamworth, Newcastle and Bathurst), Queensland (Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast) and Victoria (Frankston, Morwell and Geelong), giving Rugby fans across Australia the opportunity to engage with an elite Rugby competition.

In a mouthwatering re-match of the 2014 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship Grand Final, champions Brisbane City will host Perth Spirit at Ballymore Stadium on Thursday, 20 August in this season’s curtain-raiser broadcast LIVE on FOX SPORTS.

A pair of all-New South Wales blockbusters also catch the eye in Round 1, with the North Harbour Rays entertaining the Sydney Stars at Manly Oval, while the New South Wales Country Eagles travel to Merrylands RSL Park to take on the Greater Sydney Rams.

The Queensland Derby headlines Round 3 when Queensland Country host Brisbane City at the Clive Berghofer Stadium in Toowoomba.

For the first time, the Melbourne Rising will take its home NRC fixtures outside of the city when they play the Greater Sydney Rams in Morwell in Round 5, the New South Wales Country Eagles at Simonds Stadium in Geelong in Round 7 and the Sydney Stars at Frankston Oval in Round 9.

Perth Spirit will be looking for a similar result from last year’s Semi-Final against the Melbourne Rising when they meet the same opponents at McGillivray Fields in Mount Claremont, Perth in Round 6. Another derby features on the same weekend with the Sydney Stars playing the Greater Sydney Rams at Leichhardt Oval.

With the top four sides on the ladder at the end of the regular season making the finals, the 2015 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship Semi-Finals will take place on the weekend of 24/25 October, with the Grand Final a week later.

In 2014, the Australian Rugby Union introduced a host of new law variations and innovations to encourage attacking, free-flowing Rugby. By the end of the inaugural season, there were 358 tries in 39 matches, an average of 9.2 a game.

FOX SPORTS will again broadcast one match a week LIVE on Thursday night throughout the season.

Greater Sydney Rams are RAMping up rugby in your back yard for 2015

Preparations are underway at the Greater Sydney RAMS in the lead up to the 2015 NRC competition.
Fans will enjoy an intense communication programme from now through until the end of the seasons.  RAMS developments, including game day information, player signings, tournaments and member offerings will all be included.

To kick start we would like to release some key initiatives, of which we will expand upon over the coming weeks.

1. Games Announcement:
The official NRC draw will be released to the public late June. What we can confirm is that the RAMS will likely have one game in Queensland, Victoria, and the ACT, with all remaining games in New South Wales. Pirtek Stadium will continue as our long term home ground.

2. Staff:
After a very busy season in 2014, we have committed to a number of key positions at the RAMS which will propel our franchise success for seasons to come. We now announce some official positions below:

  • Fraser Neill (ex-Waratahs CEO) - Strategy and Growth

  • Jim Williams (former Wallaby and Wallaby assistant coach, NSWRU indigenous project lead for LEL program) has now officially been appointed Franchise Coach

  •  Greg Dening (aka Panda) appointed Mens General Manager

  • Carl McDonald appointed Head of our womens elite 7's program

  • Katie Mullaly (ex-womens Australian rugby) appointed community and ambassador initiatives.

Further announcements on structure will follow in the next few weeks.  A series of video interviews with Jim Williams will be released later to our membership base, and will be featured on the websitewww.ramsrugby.com.au

Jim Williams played at the elite level, representing the Wallabies in 14 Tests. He started his coaching career in Munster in 2005 as assistant coach and then forwards coach. He left there in 2008 and came back to Australia and took up an assistant coaching role with the Wallabies from 2008 to 2011. Jim has been working with NSW Rugby for the past three years and he loves the vision of the RAMS and being a part of what we are creating.

Jim is passionate about promoting Rugby in Western Sydney in particular, and through his current role he has built relationships with different community groups around Sydney which will be helpful in promoting the RAMS. He’s especially keen to ensure  that the RAMS are able to provide players opportunities to improve their lives, such as educational support.

3. Player Signings:
Jed Holloway has been signed for 2015 season. The Southern Districts and Waratahs product is set for a barnstorming NRC tournament. As we type this memo, a hamstring injury has curtailed his Super Rugby season so NRC teams...... be wary of 'the caged lion'!

- Other news – one of our star players from 2014 was Ben Vola Vola.  He played so well in fact that he has recently been snatched up by the Crusaders. We missed the boat for the RAMS, but we know where his heart belongs.  We wish Ben well and will be following his career

4. Future Player Signings:
Many more playersignings will be released as June rolls along.. Our focus remains our partner Shute Shield clubs and top South-West Sydney players. No question there are other 2014 RAMS playing good rugby currently, including our Super Rugby folk e.g. Guy Millar, Jed Gillespie, Hugh Roach, Steve Mafi and Chris Alcock. Management have been working closely with Shute Shield Coach's and seeking their input on players ready to step up.

5. The RAMS mantra for 2015:
'RAMping up rugby in your backyard'
The RAMS franchise from the beginning welcomed Eastwood, Penrith, Southern Districts, West Harbour and Parramatta Shute Shield Clubs into the fold. Nothing has changed from this front, and we will continue to build strong allegiance throughout our clubs.

Last year, some of the highlights were our RAMS mascot, kids clinics and the horned beanies, which were thoroughly enjoyed by our rugby loving community. This year we aim to take it up step further, and really build our community in the heartland.

So, what does that mean:
We will play our first NRC home game this year at the Two Blues home ground – Merrylands RSL Rugby Park
We will play our second NRC home game at the Rebels home ground – Forshaw Rugby Park
We will play our third NRC home game at the Pirates home ground – Concord Oval
We will play our fourth NRC home game at the RAMS home stadium – Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta

Our ambassadorial programme will get a large RAMp up with Kate Mullaly who will be organising for Players and coaches to be out visiting Junior Clubs in the catchment: kids clinics, awards, training runs and a whole bunch of fun. We will be working closely with NSWRU and key stakeholders so we are all giving back to the future.... kids.

6. Members BBQ: in the weeks ahead we will be invite all our Members to a get together at Concord Oval with Players, Staff and Club Leaders.  It will be a chance to kick the footy, take photos or simply chat about the upcoming tournament. More on this in the days ahead.

7. Horned Army Hill: To be featured at our homegames, a special effort will made for our Subbies and Shute Shield Players and the Horned Army (fan club) to watch the game. We want to hear from you on our social media sites. Tell us what you want on game day. We will do or best to support our fellow rugby tragics.

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY NORTH HARBOUR RAYS

RE-APPOINT TOWNSEND FOR 2015 NRC SEASON

MACQUARIE University North Harbour Rays have re-appointed Geoff Townsend to lead them through the 2015 National Rugby Championship season.

Townsend, who has guided Gordon through the rebuilding of the club over the past couple of seasons, backs up after being thrown the reins at the Rays last year when Phil Blake took up a plum appointment with the Leicester Tigers in the English premiership.

“Geoff did a great job bringing players from our four feeder clubs (Gordon, Manly, Northern Suburbs and Warringah) together and I am sure he will be able to build on that very solid foundation in 2015,” Rays chairman Gary Flowers said.

“I can remember remarking during the season that you wouldn’t know that the Rays were a team that had come together from four clubs that only weeks earlier had been such fierce Shute Shield rivals.”

The Rays missed out on the playoffs in finishing in seventh position, but going into the final round match against great Sydney rivals the Sydney Stars at Leichhardt Oval, they still had a chance of making the four-team semi-final series.

In the end the Rays’ eight-game NRC season was made up of two wins, two draws and four losses but they forged a reputation for having one of the hardest packs in the inaugural running of the competition.

The Rays in many people’s eyes were what the NRC was all about and exposed a number of players to a higher level of competition.

Since the end of the season skipper Greg Peterson has played Test Rugby for the USA Eagles and has picked up a contract with the Leicester Tigers while young centre Mali Hingano has been signed for French Top 14 club La Rochelle where he often starts in the centres.

Young Manly Marlins hooker Dave Porecki is now training with the NSW Waratahs and has been used in the Gen Blue system in recent weeks.

But set piece reliability was an ongoing issue for the Rays in 2014 and this hurt the team and the results that were produced.

“That’s obviously an area that we will need to improve on to make the playoffs (of the NRC) in 2015,” Townsend said.

“The focus now is on the clubs with the start of the Shute Shield a week away, but we will be working away in the background to make sure that we bring together a structure and a playing group that will do justice to the whole Rays concept.”

The coaching team will be fleshed out in coming weeks but the Rays will need to replace former Warringah first grade coach Haig Sare who has moved to Queensland to be closer to his family.

Sare worked closely with the backs at the Rays and drew on his stromg relationship with the Rats backline stars who made up a fair slice of the backline.

The NRC season will kick off on Thursday, August 20 with the grand final to be played on the weekend of November 1 right in the midst of the Rugby World Cup in the UK.

The competition is sure to be an ideal proving ground if and when injuries hit the Wallabies throughout RWC 2015.

The Rays played their four home games at Brookvale Oval and averaged a little of 2000 through the gate at each of these matches. They also featured in four of Fox Sports televised games.

ARU CONGRATULATES BRISBANE CITY FOR BUILDCORP NRC WIN
The Australian Rugby Union extended its congratulations to McInnes Wilson Lawyers Brisbane City for their 37-26 win over Property Club Perth Spirit at Ballymore Stadium yesterday, taking out the inaugural Buildcorp National Rugby Championship.

Brisbane City notched five tries to four to seal the win in front of the 7,889-strong home crowd.

Throughout the season, Brisbane City displayed their dominance, winning six of eight encounters during the first-ever Buildcorp NRC season, finishing third on the ladder, just one point behind the CSU NSW Country Eagles.

Last night’s Final was the second time this year that the two teams have met, after Brisbane City narrowly defeated Perth Spirit in Round Two (26-21) at the University of WA, Perth.

Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver was delighted with the effort from both teams, and congratulated Brisbane City for their solid performance.

“I wholeheartedly congratulate McInnes Wilson Lawyers Brisbane City on winning the inaugural Buildcorp National Rugby Championship,” said Pulver.

“Brisbane City’s victory caps off a strong season which saw Queensland Rugby fans embrace the new competition.

“I would also like to commend Property Club Perth Spirit on their gallant efforts. After an amazing win over competition leaders Melbourne Rising in the Semi-Final, the Spirit proved they were worthy contenders for the title.

“The Buildcorp NRC has been a great success, with more than 150 non-contracted players testing their skills against Super Rugby and Wallabies players.

“After a successful debut year for the Buildcorp NRC, I look forward to seeing the competition grow in the coming seasons,” Pulver said.

Both Brisbane City and Perth Spirit truly embraced the development objectives of the Buildcorp NRC, with 46 non-contracted club players taking to the field for Queensland sides, and 25 Perth-based players who are currently outside of the Western Force senior squad also exposed to the competition.
