Media Release 26 June 2016
Nelson nails thrilling Southern 2000 sedan stoush at Nyora’s season closer.
Matthew Nelson took a thrilling last gasp win in the prestigious Bob Hickson Memorial Southern 2000 for unlimited sedans at Nyora Raceway today. In a further omen that it was meant to be Nelson was driving driving mum Sonia’s #96 Commodore to the victory in the race that honors the late club stalwart Bob Hickson who also drove under the number 96.
While the race was euphorious for Nelson it was as equally heart breaking for Nick Hill who came out of semi-retirement and led the majority of the 50 lap mini endure only have his left rear tyre deflate just laps from the end allowing Nelson and Zac Swanson to pounce as the trio entered turn three, 3 wide for the last time with Hill being shuffled back to third behind Nelson and Swanson.
Not far behind the top trio came Scott Laidlaw, Shona Bent, Victory Lane Hard charger Leigh Bourke, Hans Lovski and Lucas Conder who all completed 50 laps, many in very close company.
Of course there were many other hard luck stories including Brad Warren who led the first 15 laps until being black flagged as his car started blowing out huge amounts of smoke over the chasing pack and Stephen Laidlaw who’d worked his way to 2nd only to suffer a mechanical issue.
Dylan Campton, Andrew Katz, Swanson, Hill (x2), Warren, Stephen Laidlaw and Travis Ramsdale all took heat wins while Bourke won the B-Main from Jeff Blencowe.
In an earlier heat Matt Reddecliffe got into the roll-over action flipping Michael Ardley’s Victorian Championship winning Standard Saloon Commodore.
The Crash N Bash brigade were also on hand for their 30 lap rumble and as expected it was exciting full contact racing with vast damage but Jake Young got out front and stayed out front winning from Rob Bushell, Josh Attewell, James Kane, Frank Sinclair and Daniel Wanders. More cars ended on the infield than finished the race.
Glen Bosanko was pushed into a roll-over during a heat while Matt Haby, James Brown, Young and Bushell took the heat wins.
The Standard Saloons were also on hand with twin features.
The previously delayed Miles Cup final was raced for those that had already qualified and was won by Craig Templeton from Aaron Marshall, Nick Chrystie, Jay Dickson and Mark Miles.
Templeton led the opening 10 lap stanza before the field reversed direction at which point Marshall was in front. When the field changed direction after 20 laps for the final 10 laps “Tempo” made his move with just a few laps to run to take the win.
In the regular Standard Saloon feature event it was Nick Chrystie who led from go to whoa defeating Aaron Price, Ben Randall, and Mitch and Jake Blencowe.
Heat races fell to Marshall, Randall, Chrystie and Templeton.
Nyora Raceway would like to thank all of its generous sponsors, officials and volunteers and all of the competitors who raced there throughout the season as well as all the great fans that supported the track including today where a great crowd was on hand despite being in the midst of winter to witness the great action
The next event for the club is the annual presentation night at the Tooradin Sports Club, Tooradin on July 30. Tickets are still available for this event

Season ending thrills headed to Nyora Raceway for the annual Southern 2000 big bash.
The 6th annual Southern 2000 Bob Hickson memorial will kick-off this Sunday at Nyora Raceway with a great field of cars entered for the 50 lap mini-enduro season ending stoush.
Last years’ race was a cracker with Stephen Laidlaw and young Ty Galley going at each other for 48 laps of the 50 lap event before a mechanical malady sidelined Laidlaw two laps from home. Laidlaw is again entered but things won’t be any easier for him this year with classy competitors like Scott Whittle, Brad Warren, Simon (better turn up this time) Bent, Shona Bent, Craig Templeton, Matt Nelson, Lucas Conder, Leigh Bourke and a whole host more in a range of sedans from V8 engined Super Sedans and Standard Saloons to high-performance and nimble six cylinder speed machines. Just making the final event from this huge quality stacked field will be an achievement in itself.
As if the Southern 2000 wasn’t enough action in itself there will also be a 30 lap Crash N Bash rumble that is sure to excite with a large field of contenders for the win including all the regular Crash N Bashers as well as Daniel Wanders whose speedway style is definitely more suited to this knock ‘em down, almost last man standing brand of speedway action.
Standard Saloons will also be in action and as an added bonus many of these racers will also double up in the final of the Miles Cup which was held over from a previous meeting.
Make sure you’re at Nyora raceway this coming Sunday June 26th for all of the no holds barred season ending speedway action.
Racing starts from 10:30am.
See the Nyora Facebook page for weather related updates.

Thrills and spills the nature of the game at Nyora Raceway.
A big field of racers provided plenty of thrills and spills yesterday at Nyora Raceway with 5 drivers going upside down (well four drivers going upside down five times) and two series’ being decided by the narrowest of margins at the last gasp.
Wingless Sprints were the headline categories on the day with two series up for decision with firstly the Intercity Signs Ladies of the Dirt series up for grabs and then the Velocita Eastern Challenge series for open competition to be determined.
In the first heat of the Intercity Signs Ladies series, points leader Jamie-Lee Smith would start alongside her nearest challenger Samantha Millar. A half lose on lap 2 by Smith saw contact with Te-arni Perkins who was done for the day. Smith dodged a bullet by being reinstated at the head of the field for the restart and led Millar away until another half lose on lap 3 saw her drop some positions. While trying to scramble back through the field she made contact with Brittany Kuypers and spun on lap 9. This allowed Millar to pull back some points on the leader.
The second heat belonged to Kuypers who narrowly defeated Cobden youngster Carly Walsh as Millar and Smith battled through from the back of the pack with Millar finishing ahead of Smith.
Walsh would start on pole in only her fifth race in a Wingless Sprint and would lead from start to finish to take her maiden Wingless feature win. Behind her the battle for the series crown was on in earnest as Millar slotted in behind Walsh for the duration. Smith who started 7th was trying to work her way forward needing to finish no less than 2 positions behind Millar to keep the points lead.
Bravely she battled on getting up to 4th place by lap 7 which would have given her the series title. However, the car’s engine decided to make things exciting by dropping a cylinder over the last few laps as Smith was in a tight battle with Renae Eastham, Georgia McLeod and Bree Hall. The lack of performance saw her pushed back to 5th place and then McLeod attacked as they took the chequered flag missing the position by 0.008 seconds. Quickly the points’ scenario was calculated and Millar was announced as the series champion by just 3 points from Smith and Eastham who’d passed Demelza Nettlefold for the final step on the series podium.
The Velocita Eastern Challenge series was then contested by the men and women and here it was a similar but closer scenario. Local hopeful Wayne Hurford was leading by a slimmer margin than the ladies had shared with Warrick Taylor the nearest challenger with local rookie Todd Hobson also in the picture.
A front row start for Taylor in the first heat was a blessing as he jumped to the lead and clear air. Behind him things were a bit more frenetic with Brett Kuypers running wide while in 3rd place, hitting the wall and rolling. Taylor took the narrowest of wins from Nic Green.
In the second heat Hurford had a lucky break when he made contact with Neil Grey who spun. Hurford went on to win the heat from Jason Langdon and maintained the points equilibrium.
Heat three saw a scary flip when something broke while Wayne Logue was leading and he hit the back straight wall and flipped end for end. Thankfully he was unharmed. David Alford then took over the lead until his car died and the race was declared with Grey getting the win from Hobson and Eastham. Before that however Kuypers had gone upside down for the second time in two heats.
In the final heat Hurford and Taylor would start side by side on the 4th row and after a couple of spins by others, Liam Atkinson took the win from Adin Robertson and Taylor. Importantly for Taylor, Hurford had finished back in sixth setting up an exciting final.
Our top three points leaders would start in the top three positions with Taylor on pole from Hobson, Hurford, Grey, Langdon, Robertson and the rest of the field.
“I knew on that race track I had to get to the corner first and just keep my line because it was going to be difficult to pass on.” stated Taylor later from victory circle.
And that is exactly what he did although Hobson was right on his nerf bar and appeared to be slightly quicker at times but was unable to make a pass as the track offered little up high.
Hurford slotted into third with Robertson behind and cheekily hoped that “Hobson would take Taylor out.”
A couple of spins punctuated the 20 lap journey but there was no change at the front as Taylor went on to score the win and the series by a mere two points. Hobson’s runner up finish maintained his 3rd place series position and Hurford just missed the series title.
The irony is that Nyora had taken on the final round after the previous attempt had been rained out at another track. If not for that Nyora club member Hurford would have been the champion.
In the unlimited sedans it was Nyora veteran Mick Evans who took the feature win from Darren Skilton and last feature winner Andrew Spink. Michael Hillman gave us some additional excitement when he rolled his car down in turn three.
Evans had easily won the opening heat as well as the 4th heat. Spink and Shona Bent won the other two.
The Standard Saloon final was an all the way win for Ballarat’s Craig Templeton who was chased all the way by Pakenham’s Mark Miles with Matt McDermott using and abusing his mother-in-laws car to take 3rd from Aaron Price whose father had earlier debuted an awesome looking Humpy Holden bodied Unlimited sedan with a v8 engine and huge Sprintcar style rear tyres. In an earlier heat Chris Charles flipped his Falcon.
The SDAV Hot Rods were down on numbers but the final was a cracking nose to tail battle between winner Dean West, Victorian Champion Shannon Meakins and Stan Marco Jr until Meakins spun on the last corner of the penultimate lap leading the race to be declared with Glenn Lawless grabbing third place.
In Junior sedans Donald Young ended his Nyora junior career as a winner in the 1200cc sedans defeating Aussie Champ Todd Atkins and his younger sister Zoe Young. Chloe Sheerman was fourth.
In the Standard Saloons for juniors Bailey Perkins was victorious from Jack Yeomans and Karsha-Rose Russell
The Ladies final was won by Sheena Bishop in her first race here from Sarah Price and Shannon Lovell.
Nyora raceway will now conclude the 2015/16 season with the annual Southern 2000 Bob Hickson Memorial for Unlimited Sedans on June 26th with supports from the Juniors and the ladies.

Full program of events this Sunday @ Nyora Raceway.
This Sunday May 22nd will see nearly 100 different drivers vying for victory in 9 different categories of racing at the tight and testing Nyora raceway.
Last meetings Wingless Sprint winner Wayne Logue will be looking to go back to back for the first time ever at the Gippsland venue, but his veteran father who muscled him out of a feature win at Redline raceway earlier this season will be amongst the almost two dozen drivers in the category trying to win for themselves.
In the Ladies of the Dirt Wingless division Jamie-Lee Smith will also be looking to back up her maiden Wingless Sprint win from the last meeting here however, round two winner Samantha Millar is also very quick around Nyora. Having won two of the three rounds contested so far though will give Smith some confidence and should put her in the box seat for the series win which concludes this weekend.
Unlimited sedans will be led by last start winner Andrew Spink but a tuff field including Shona Bent, Mick Evans, Phil Le Poidevin, Lucas Conder and others will be out to knock the smile from his face while possibly knocking some panels off each other as well.
Some serious noise will be provided by the V8 SDAV Hot Rods who are in the midst of their 50th year as a stand-alone club. Prolific winner and local Maryknoll resident Dean West will be a slight favourite, however Shannon Meakins, Stan Marco, Kali Hovey and the ever improving Glen “Hollywood” Lawless will be up against a man who has been part of the club for most of its 50 years of existence, Mr Phil Jenkins.
The Standard Saloons have a great field of competitive racers including Nyora President Shane Ardley, veterans John Watson and Leigh Gooding and ace racer Mark Miles to name a few.
A number of kids will also be blasting around in both the 1200cc juniors and the Standard Saloon Juniors. Aussie Champ Todd Atkins will lead the 1200cc brigade but will be pushed hard by Ricky Cornwall who has won here previously and won last weekend at Alexandra Speedway.
Thrown in separate events for the Ladies in Standard Saloons and Vintage Sprintcar demonstrations and it promises to be a fantastic Sunday of family speedway.
Please note that racing will commence at the earlier time of 10:30 due to the number of events on the chock full program.
Nyora raceway will then conclude the 2015/16 season with the annual Southern 2000 Bob Hickson Memorial for Unlimited Sedans on June 26th with supports from the Juniors and the ladies.

Wingless Sprints, Mini Sprints and the SDAV Hot Rods will provide plenty of open wheel action alongside the Open Sedans and 1200cc Juniors this Saturday night at Gippslands Nyora Raceway.
The Wingless Sprints (pictured below) will be the dominant division as they take in round 3 of the Velocita Eastern Challenge Series with Travis Millar, Tony Moule and Wayne Hurford set to take on Clyde youngster Todd Hobson and Cranbourne’s Warwick Taylor amongst others.
The Mini Sprints will be fighting for the prestigious Geoff Moule Memorial where Dave May and Owen Bulman will continue their season long battle with Matt Parson making a welcome return to Nyora after winning last years’ event.
As part of their 50th anniversary celebrations the SDAV Hot Rods will bring their own brand of Thunder Down Under V8 Action where Maryknoll’s newly crowned State Champion Dean West will continue to fight with Shannon Meakins, Stan Marco and others.
19 year old Shona Bent was comprehensively beaten at the last meeting by some superior machinery and will be looking for redemption with a more even field of competitors including Wayne Ramsdale as here major opposition.
Donald Young has had the run in the junior sedans here of late as he finishes off his 1200cc career but this time he will have to face current National Champion Todd Atkins, Ayden bellman, Jack Ramsdale and Zoe Young.

Speedway Sedan Spectacular this weekend @Nyora Raceway.
Speedway sedans and in particular Standard Saloons and Open Sedans will make up a spectacular night of racing this Saturday 5th March at Gippsland’s Nyora Raceway.
Numerically and financially the Miles Cup for Standard Saloons will be the headline event with a solid field contesting the unique event. With three time and defending champion Chris Stewart not contesting the event it opens up the door for a number of talented racers to take home the big bucks including Victoria #2 Mark Miles.
Local aces Bradley Hill, Aaron price, Russell Hill, Rob Bushell, Michael Ardley and veteran Bruce Bullard will push as hard as possible with Brad Hill looking for another Nyora feature win.
With competitors from Swan Hill, Alexandra, Bendigo, Ballarat, Rosedale and Moe all in action it will be a top event.
Previous Miles Cup Sedan action
The open Sedans will also bring their own brand of sedan thrills and spills at a slightly higher pace than the Standard Saloons. One who will be not looking for a spill will be Simon Bent who used to dominate at this venue but whose car was severely damaged last time out here. A welcome return to form could see the curly haired larrikin back in victory lane although he wouldn’t be too upset if his daughter Shona Bent headed him to the line. Shona has scored a number of wins in this division of late particularly at this venue. Wayne Ramsdale may have a performance edge over them all however and has the skill set to go with it but you never know when there is a full field of edgy racers on track.
Ladies and Juniors will also be a part of the Sedan action and there will also be some glorious Vintage Sprintcars cutting some demonstration laps as well.
