McFadden Steals President’s Cup.
By Mark Humphrey
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 21st January 2015. Former national champ James McFadden literally stole the President’s Cup out of Brooke Tatnell’s back pocket with a spectacular high line charge over the last 5 laps of the 25 lap President’s Cup that reeled in American Kyle Hirst then Ian Loudoun and with just over 2 laps remaining leader Brooke Tatnell.
2016 Essendon Ford President's Cup
McFadden who has thrilled the Avalon spectators with classic slide passes in the past put on a show of high line running which saw the charger round up the podium placegetters in no time. There is no doubt that his team had the perfect 25 lap setting on the car but that aside J Mac’s driving was nothing short of spectacular. Once he got on a roll it just seemed easy and the effortless pass he made on race leader Brooke Tatnell demonstrated just how good the car was after 20 laps of the 25 lap race.
Tatnell who started on the front row led the pack away for the 25 lap journey but had to do it all over again when Eureka Sheds Series leader Brett Milburn tipped it over in turn 4 bringing on the reds. Milburn who has had a faultless year to date walked away from the roll over but the car was finished for the night.
On the re-start Tatnell once again led them out with Loudoun, Hirst and J Mac in hot pursuit. Loudoun looked strong throughout the night and was never more than a dozen car lengths away from Tatnell and looked to be on his way to a well earnt podium position. McFadden on the other hand was having a go at Hirst but couldn’t make a pass stick on the current Classic champ early in the race. In fact positions were unchanged up front for the next 19 laps as the race settled into a steady pace.
New South Welshmen Andrew Wright who started the feature in 7th showed plenty of speed during the night and was capable of getting in amongst the leaders but unfortunately missed the set-up as the car went backwards losing 4 positions to finish in 11th. Wright would have been disappointed with the feature as the car looked seriously quick early in the night and having raced at Avalon on several occasions over the past couple of years would have been looking to advance up the order as the race went on.
On the other side of the coin there was one guy in particular who was making big inroads into the field as the race went on. Automatically one would assume that this guy was Jamie Veal as he was starting out of position 15 after having to qualify through the B-Main but in fact it was the ACT 21 Essendon backed car of Shaun Dobson. Dobson who had earlier picked up a heat win started out of position 11 for the feature with plenty to do if he was to advance up the leader board. To put Dobson’s drive into perspective, outside of McFadden who picked up 4 spots (in the last 5 laps) and Dion Bellman (2 spots to finish 7th), Dobson was the only other top 10 finisher to gain places picking off Milburn (accident), Bellman, Mollenoyux, Wright, Delemont and Anderson to finish in the top 5 after the 25 lap journey. Domain Ramsay who started at the rear managed to pick up a couple of spots but one of them was Milburn who had earlier crashed out. So for Dobson the lap board backs ups his exception drive in the feature and brings back memories of 2 seasons back where he dominated sprintcar racing at Avalon Raceway.
The race had 4 visiting Americans lining up in the feature with Hirst undoubtedly the most successful on the night. Of the Americans Hirst started in and finished in 3rd, Paul McMahon also finished where he started which was position 12 with Carson Macedo improving one spot to finish in 13th with Kraig Kinser also jumping a spot to 16th albeit a lap down.
The Essendon Ford backed team of Ian Loudoun’s V3 will go away scratching their heads as to what went wrong. Loudoun was looking so strong during the race holding down 2nd spot and apart from an early look by Hirst was virtually on his own for the entire race distance until the pass by McFadden. No one could stop the rampaging McFadden but all of a sudden Loudoun found himself in 4th position and off the podium after Hirst got by on the 2nd last lap. Car owner David Dixon spoke of how the team was disappointed at the result and felt for Loudoun who had been faultless throughout the race. In the end it was another classic McFadden race that thrilled the large gathering of spectators who had made the mid-week trek.
Top 5 were McFadden, Tatnell, Hirst, Loudoun and Dobson.
Heat winners were Dobson, Domain Ramsay, American Paul McMahon, Ryan Davis and Ian Loudon. Super stars Line, Murcott and American Terry McCarl didn’t figure in the night at all.
The sprintcars have a spell from Avalon and return on the 5th of March for the Great Southern Showdown. Go to : http://www.avalonraceway.com/ for more info on what's happening at Avalon Raceway
Vogels Goes Unbeaten On The Way To Vic Title
By Mark Humphrey
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 10th January 2016. Victorian John Vogels walked away from last night’s SRA Victorian 410 Sprintcar Title with a clean sheet after winning his round 1 heat, the Open Dash and then the 410 Victorian title to now have 2 Victorian titles to his name. Vogels led home 19 year old American Carson Macedo and current Eureka Garages series leader Brett Milburn over a hectic 30 lap race that had Darren Mollenoyux finishing in 5th just behind Peter Milnes after originally starting in the C-Main.
The schedule for the 410’s would see time trialling open up the night with defending Victorian champion Daniel Pestka taking the #1 spot with a 12.080 lap from another visiting American in Randy Hannagan followed by Shaun Dobson and Tim Rankin with Jamie Hennessy rounding out the top 5.
Into the first of 3 heats with Vogels getting the win from Macedo with Pestka in 3rd. Macedo a first time visitor to Australian shores become the second youngest winner of the Californian Kings Of The West Series with only super talent Kyle Larson younger when he finished 2nd in the Gary Patterson Tribute Race in Stockton last November. Last year’ classic winner Kyle Hirst had won the KWS series the previous 2 years highlighting what a tough series it is to win.
Heat 2 went the way of Ian Loudoun in front of Luke Walker with Tim Hutchins in 3rd.
Heat 3 was taken out by South Aussie Glen Sutherland from local driver Peter Milnes with another track local in Dennis Jones coming in 3rd.
The Open Dash to decide pole position was won by Vogels with Sutherland putting in a great run to fill the front row with Vogels. Macedo was next followed by Walker and Milnes. Loudoun who qualified for the dash pulled in-field prior to the start and would start from 6th in the feature. Pestka picked up the consolation win in Dash #2 from Hutchins, Milburn, Jones, Matthew Reed with Nick Lacey rounding out positions 7 through 12.
The C-Main was a stop start affair with 6 of the 14 runners failing to make the finish line. Mollenoyux looked fast as he powered away from the field to take the win with Domain Ramsay, Jack Lee, Kris Lacey, Sam Wren and Terry Kelly advancing to the B Main.
The B-Main was similar to the C with several stoppages resulting in half a dozen runners heading to the infield. Shaun Dobson and Randy Hannagan had occupied the front row and were never headed to both advance to the rear of the feature. Grant Anderson starting out of 10th finished 3rd with Mollenoyux coming from 14th to finish in the top 4. Jack Lee was equally impressive coming from one spot behind Mollenoyux to finish in 5th while Adam King occupied the last transfer spot.
With 30 laps on the board the final looked to be a battle between Vogels and Sutherland with both gapping the ensuing pack. Macedo had started to chase down Sutherland and on lap 5 found a way past the Gambier Earthmovers car to sit in 2nd. Although there were some stoppages throughout the race the top 3 looked to be settled in with a podium spot locked away or so it seemed. Another stoppage on lap 22 had Milburn slipping under Sutherland the next lap to take over 3rd. Sutherland fought back briefly but lost out another spot to Anderson the next lap. One lap further on saw Sutherland re-take 4th spot off Anderson before tragedy struck with Sutherland clipping the turn 4 fence and inverting the car. Anderson limped into the infield also finishing what was an exciting night’s racing by both drivers.
On the re-start Vogels once again led Macedo into turn 1 and with 5 laps to go maintained his lead to take out the win from Macedo with Milburn in 3rd. Macedo come close at one stage to Vogels but outside of that opportunity Vogels pretty much controlled the race. Milnes had a great drive to finish in 4th while Mollenoyux was sensational in finishing in the top 5. Dobson was next followed by Hannagan and Pestka who earlier on looked strong for a podium before getting caught up with Reed. Loudoun finished 9th with Lee taking the last top 10 spot. Dennis Jones and Adam King were the final 2 cars to meet the chequered flag with 6 retiring before race distance.
Vogels had dominated the whole night and was definitely the stand out driver with Macedo showing plenty in the Dave Challons ride to suggest he will have an impact in 10 days’ time when the President’s Cup takes centre stage at Avalon Raceway. Sutherland come within a whisker of a podium finish and should carry that form into the cup. Milburn noted that his position 9 starting spot in the feature was hard to capitalise on early in the race and will be better with a higher qualifying spot. Both Milnes and Mollenoyux were solid with their drives and take some form into the cup.

James McFast Blasts Avalon’s WSS Round.
By Mark Humphrey
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 31st December 2015. Former national champ James McFadden put on an outstanding display of sprintcar driving in last night’s World Series Sprintcar round 4 clash at Avalon Raceway that saw the champ lap cars all the way up to position 4 in the 35 lap final. Only visiting American Kyle Hirst, hot streak Jamie Veal and long-time king of the sport in Brooke Tatnell finished on the same lap as McFadden.
McFadden who started out of 4th position trailed Hirst and Veal into turn 1 for the 35 lap feature but it wasn’t long before McFadden was hunting down Veal. Veal who has been in amazing form for the best part of 2 seasons picked up pole position in the Gold Shootout from Kyle Hirst with Tatnell and McFadden finishing in 3rd and 4th respectively. Barely a lap into the feature and the cautions were brought on when Ian Loudoun and Ryan Jones got together in turn 4.
On the complete re-start McFadden drove around Veal to move into 2nd spot on lap 1 trailing Hirst who had got the jump on the pack. Veal sat in 3rd with Tatnell following. Luke Walker, Domain Ramsay and Adam King were all 1st lap retirees as J Mac hunted down Hirst. Brad Keller who started out of 6 dropped a couple of spots to be in 8th after 3 laps with current Aussie champ Dave Murcott also dropping a couple of spots early.
Ian Loudoun pulled to the infield shortly after as the racing settled down into a battle up front between Hirst and McFadden. McFadden had a bit of a look around the top on lap 10 before cruising past Hirst on the very next lap. The race had settled down into a nice rhythm with consistent lapping by the top 10. McFadden who had taken the lead on lap 11 was straight into lapped traffic and started cutting his way through the back markers using both the low and high lines to get the job done. The racing surface looked ok giving drivers speed both down low and around the boards. The Avalon track crew had carried out track prep several times throughout the night which was a surprise considering this type of intermittent track prep was phased out by Avalon years ago.
At the halfway mark McFadden had done a number on the rest of the field and was simply cutting his way through bunches of cars at a time. Several times he went high into turn 3 to pass and then take the pole coming out of turn 4 to get the job done on another runner. His driving skill was unbelievable which was complimented by what it seemed a good racing surface. Running order at the halfway mark had McFadden leading Hirst and Veal followed by Tatnell, Lines, Dillon, Pestka, Keller, Vogels, Harding, Hallett, Milburn, Tranter, Murcott, Falland and Jones.
Positions stayed virtually unchanged with a bit of jostling amongst the tail enders right up until lap 31 when the cautions were switched on for the 3rd time. Milburn and Pestka were out with Ryan Jones and Keke Falland a couple of laps down but still running. Lines who had been battling Dillon all race gave his spot up to Dillon on lap 27 with Johnny Vogels coming from the other direction looking to make up places in the dying stages. The big lead that McFadden had opened up on the field during the race was washed away with the caution giving Hirst, Veal and co another chance at the win.
On the re-start with 4 to go McFadden was quickly away and had opened up a mini gap on Hirst and co within half a lap. Steven Lines lost 4 spots in the space of a couple of laps while Vogels went the other way pickup up 2 to be in 5th place with one to go. Chequered flag out with J Mac cruising over the line for the round 4 win and the 2nd of the Speedweek Series. Hirst was next followed by Veal, Tatnell and Vogels to round out the top 5. Murcott did well to work his way back up to 8th while Steven Lines rolled across the line in 10th with Dillon finishing in 12th after the pair had battled for a top 5 spot throughout the race.
The night definitely belonged to McFadden who managed to find plenty of pace in the Avalon surface. The series now moves onto Warrnambool for round 5 on New Year’s Day followed by round 6 the next day.
Heat wins went to Ryan Davis, Jason Pryde, American Thomas Meseraull in heat 3 and 8, Jamie Hennessy in heat 4 and 7, Adam King and Chris Solomon.
The B-Main transfer spots went the way of Domain Ramsay, Daniel Harding, Jake Tranter, Ian Loudoun, Brock Hallett and Adam King.
Next on the calendar for Avalon is the K-Rock cup for sedans on the 2nd of January followed by the Victorian 410 & 360 Sprintcar Titles on the 9th of January.

Milburn Increases Eureka Lead With Gold Cup Win.
By Mark Humphrey.
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 27th December 2015. Victorian Brett Milburn has led a go to whoa 30 lap final to take out Avalon Raceway’s Gold Cup with Darren Mollenoyux and Corey McCullagh filling the minor positions.
The meeting was lucky to get going considering the rain that had fallen during the day making parts of the infield unusable throughout the meeting. Officials had made the call to get the racing underway around 7pm after some initial hot laps to get the track into shape. After the initial 8 heat races had been run officials decided to cancel the top 6 shootout electing to go straight through with the C & B Mains to determine the A Main starting line-up. Tasmanian Tim Hutchins had picked up the C Main win but was unable to finish in the top 6 of the B Main which was taken out by ACT’s David McKay.
McKay, Jones, King, Hunter, Meade and South Aussie Glen Sutherland tacked onto the back of the A Main for the 30 lap final. Brett Milburn and Corey McCullagh occupied the front row of the feature with Milburn getting the jump to lead the 18 car field out from McCullagh, Milnes, Van Ginneken, and Vogels with Mollenoyux holding down 6th place.
Milburn managed to open up a lead on the following pack and looked comfortable out front. Mollenoyux had picked off Vogels on the first lap and Van Ginneken the very next lap to move into 4th while Dobson who had started out of 8th was slowing dropping back through the field after initially getting past Ryan Davis on the first lap. David McKay had led the B Main runners out collecting the scalps of Rod Matthews and Jye O’Keefe early but gave back the spots and a couple more after just a handful of laps.
Meanwhile Mollenoyux was on a bit of a charge and had picked off Peter Milnes on lap 4 to move into 3rd. On lap 12 the hard charging Mollenoyux had moved into 2nd with a neat pass on Corey McCullagh while further down the order Daniel Pestka had made his way up to 7th having got past Dobson and Davis early. Adam King was another who was making up ground in the middle of the pack and had made his way up to 11th after starting out of position 15.
Brett Milburn had opened up a gap on the field as he made his way towards lapped traffic. Mollenoyux who had been the hard charger of the final made a move on McCullagh on lap 12 to move into 2nd place relegating McCullagh to 3rd. 2 laps later Pestka made a move on Van Ginneken to move into 6th after starting out of 9th.
There were lots of mini battles going on in the pack as the race had passed the 20 lap mark without a stoppage. Tim Van Ginneken who had started out of 4th had pulled into the in-field on lap 14 and was the only casualty of the 30 lap feature. Glen Sutherland was mixing it with the other B Main transferees and had made his way up from 17th to 13th after getting past McKay. Sutherland looked fast at times throughout the race but with a stoppage free final it was hard to make up positions and found himself down a lap as leader Brett Milburn rolled past on the high line. Sutherland kept the challenge up to Milburn unlapping himself temporarily before Milburn managed to get past the South Aussie again to put Sutherland down a lap. Milburn would lap Hunter who had made his way up from 16th to the number 12 spot with Shaun Dobson the last of Milburn’s scalps in 11th.
The top 7 was virtually unchanged for the last half of the race with the exception of Davis and Pestka who exchanged places on lap 23 only to revert back to their positions the following lap. Milburn had lapped up to 10th position with just a handful of laps left and had used both the pole and top line to weave his way through traffic. Avalon staff had prepared a cracker of a track with several lanes available throughout the 30 lap final.
After 30 uninterrupted laps the pole sitter in Brett Milburn crossed the line to take out the 30 lap feature with Darren Mollenoyux home in 2nd followed by Corey McCullagh. John Vogels was solid throughout the final and managed to pick up a spot finishing in 4th from Peter Milnes who dropped a couple of spots to round out the top 5. Next was Pestka after starting out of 9th with Davis unchanged in 7th. Ian Loudoun picked up 1 spot to finish 8th with Jye O’Keefe picking up 2 spots to finish 9th. Adam King after starting out of 15th rounded out the top 10 after a battle royale with Dobson over the last 15 laps of the race.
In the end it was a good win to Milburn who was super consistent throughout the night picking up the heat 7 win along the way. Other heat winners were David McKay, Ryan Davis, Peter Milnes, Charles Hunter, Rod Matthews, Shaun Dobson and Darren Mollenoyux.
The Eureka series heads to Simpson tonight for round 8 with the WSS circus coming to Avalon on the 30th of December.

By Mark Humphrey
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 19th October 2015. Speedcars were out in force on the weekend as the support category for the Sprintcar Fireball Derby and put on an awesome display of midget racing with Domain Ramsay taking out the final. Ramsay had no time to reflect on the win as he climbed out of his speedcar straight into his 410 sprintcar ride for the Fireball Derby final where he just missed out on another podium with a 4th placed finish.
Next big outing at Avalon Raceway for speedcars is the running of the Beasley Memorial on November 28th. For more infomation go to http://www.avalonraceway.com/.

Gartner Wins K Rock Cup
South Australia's Dave Gartner last night won the K Rock Cup at the Avalon Raceway, leading all the way in the main event, surviving a last lap challenge from Victorian Champion Peter Nicola.
Gartner got the best of the start with Peter Nicola in hot pursuit, with Scott Whittle settling back in third after starting from pole position.
The first retirement was Mick Nicola Jr with a left rear flat, then soon after that Ash Bergmeier with a flat left front and suspension damage on that corner of the car.
A multi car pile up in turns three and four brought on the yellows, with Ken Pierce, Ben Faulkhead and Scott Whittle all involved. Whittle and Faulkhead were locked together and had to be separated by the crash crew.
Once the cars were finally separated, Gartner continued to lead, Peter Nicola, Whittle, Brad Wicks and Trent Wilson of Queensland. After the restart, Whittle was laying over badly when up to speed and both he and Lucas Roberts retired shortly after.
All eyes were on the lead two cars of Gartner and Nicola, with a massive gaggle of back markers, which saw Gartner and Peter Nicola methodically and spectacularly thread through a wall of cars at times, before Ryan Daly found the wall on the front straight bringing on the yellows.
With six laps remaining, the two leaders made contact exiting turn two and continued until Lionel West spun in turn three, while cars on the back straight also got into trouble, again bringing on the yellow lights.
A massive last 5 laps of speed saw Dave Gartner take off, launching his car through the turns, hiking the left front way up in the air!
Peter Nicola kept chasing and finally got under Gartner on turn four of the last lap as the crowd roared their support, yet Gartner somehow got back the lead by the finish line in a fantastic race on a super fast track.
Brad Wicks completed the podium, with Trent Wilson and Lionel West completing the top five.

Farr Takes Back To Back President’s Cups.
Robbie Farr on his way to a 4th President's Cup.
By Mark Humphrey
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 21st January 2015. Robbie Farr is tonight the toast of the speedway world after his win in the 34th running of Avalon’s President Cup. The win gives Farr his 4th cup and now back to back cups as he led home Australia #1 Dave Murcott and American Daryn Pittman to claim the $10,000 pay cheque. The President’s Cup kicks off arguably the greatest week in Australian speedway racing with the King’s Challenge in Mt Gambier tomorrow night followed by the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at Warrnambool over 3 days starting Friday.
The night got under way with expectations of some awesome racing with a handful of class American drivers here to test the local contingent. A lot of interest was centred around the young American Christopher Bell with some pundits claiming him as the next best thing in US racing.
The format adopted for tonight’s racing was as fair a format as you could ask for. Drivers were seeded into 5 groups with the top 5 drivers headlining each heat. Hot laps and time trialling were completed for each group with the top 6 inverted for their only heat race. With track conditions changing all the time this format allowed each racer from a heat the opportunity to complete 1 timed lap in the same conditions as the rest of the heat competitors.
With time trialling completed it was time to run the 5 heats. With track conditions good there was plenty of opportunity to make up ground in the 10 lap dash. Heat 1 saw Tasmanian Tim Hutchins lead from go to whoa with Delemont and Walker unchanged from their starting position. Murcott picked up a place with Anderson picking up 3 spots to finish in 5th behind Murcott. Top time trialler Terry McCarl dropped back a spot in the heat.

West Aussie and excitement machine Scott Riley dropped a spot to finish 3rd with Pittman moving up 1 spot into 4th. Top time trialler in this group Jamie Veal was unlucky when he appeared to be turned around by Pittman on the last corner to be judged as a non-finisher. This definitely hurt the chances of Veal who would have to do something special to make the feature from here.

Heat 5 was filled with plenty of action with Matt Egel and US KWS champ Kyle Hirst trading blows for several laps. It was exciting to watch as both guys traded positions before Hirst tried to slide under Egel punting him straight into the fence. It was a heavy hit for Egel which finished his night’s racing. Hirst for his indiscretion was relegated to the rear of field and rightly so. Holtgraver picked up the win after starting from pole. Tatnell was the mover coming from 4th to finish 2nd while West Aussie Harding dropped a spot to finish 3rd.Tasmanian Mark House moved up the ladder finishing in 5th after starting out of 8th. Hirst managed to finish in 6th after starting from 5th.

The C-Main was a local event with the majority of starters seen regularly at Avalon. Local hard chargers Sutherland, Lacey, Jones and Milnes had nights to forget but could have advanced to the B-Main with a top 2 finish. The only problem with that is 4 doesn’t go into 2 and Veal and Bell were also in the race. Veal led from the pole and took the win with Bell taking over 2nd spot on lap 2 after starting out of 4th. It was a great drive by Bell to get the job done early on Lacey and House and then to hold off a barnstorming Lacey at the end of the race.

The B-Main turned out to be the race of the night courtesy of one Jamie Veal. With the top 4 transferring to the rear of the feature the task looked out of reach for Veal who was starting from the rear of the field with the top 4 consisting of Johnson, Milburn, US mover Tim Kaeding and former Aussie champ James McFadden. Throw in some more US drivers and strong interstate drivers and the task looked even harder for Veal. With 15 laps on the board Veal started his chase. By lap 2 he had moved into 15th, Lap 3 into 13th, lap 4 into 11th, lap 6 into 8th, lap 8 into 7th, lap 10 into 6th, lap 11 into 5th and then passing J Mac on lap 14 to take the last transfer spot. It was as good a racing as you will see with Veal using both the high and low lines to get the job done. At one stage Veal passed Lack high in turn 3 and then Riley inside on turn 4 which really set the crowd alight. Commentator Gavin White acknowledged Veal’s efforts after the race much to the delight of the huge crowd. Johnson managed to win the B-Main from pole with Milburn unchanged from his starting position. Kaeding moved up from 5th to finish 3rd with McFadden after swapping places with Veal late in the race finished just behind Veal in 5th and out of the transfer position. Milling who had a good night up until the B-Main dropped places to finish in 8th after starting in 3rd.Regular Avalon runner Jamie Veal put on a fantastic show for the fans tonight.

Excitement surrounded the feature with Veal the buzz word. Could he repeat his heroics one more time? Murcott led them away and held the lead until lap 11. Into lapped traffic Murcott lost the lead to a hard charging Farr and was never able to get the lead back. Far was meticulous as he threaded his way through the field to keep Murcott at bay. Murcott revealed later that he had missed the set-up after not allowing for the track to change after the street stock final. Delamont who had a great night starting out of 3rd in the feature held out Pittman until lap 15 eventually finishing in 6th behind Daniel Pestka. Pittman who started 4th managed to take the last spot on the podium with Brooke Tatnell finishing in 4th after starting from 7th. For Veal the fairy tale ending didn’t happen as he traded blows with Kaeding from lap 1. Veal managed to get past Kaeding on lap 16 to move into 10th and looked to be on his way. A slight baulk on the next lap gave the position back to Kaeding who managed to hold the position until the last lap. For the record Veal finished in 9th after starting 18th with Kaeding in 10th after starting in position 17. Both racers put on a great show for the fans but they had to take a back seat to jumpin Jac Haudenschild who virtually drove the boards for the whole race. Starting out of 11th Haudenschild was spectacular as he raced within inches of the wall trying to put on passing manoeuvres lap after lap. Unfortunately for Haudenschild the drive wasn’t there on the high line but boy did he look spectacular making up 4 positions to finish 7th. Everywhere you looked there was a battle going on with wheel to wheel racing often 2 wide. Hats off to Farr who was simply supreme in the feature. After a lean year by his standards Farr can now head to Mt Gambier with some confidence in the set-up knowing that come race day he is a chance to take home the silver ware.

USA Superstars Roll In For President’s Cup
Avalon regulars Milburn, Doukas, Loudoun, Burleigh & Sutherland in action at the SRA Victorian Titles earlier this month.
By Mark Humphrey
Avalon, Vic/Aus. 20th January 2015. Some of the world’s elite sprintcar drivers are set to go head to head with Australia’s finest sprintcar peddlers in the running of the 34th President’s Cup at Avalon Raceway tomorrow night.
With Aussie superstars like Veal, Lines, Tatnell, McFadden, Farr and current Australian champ Dave Murcott contesting the event the visiting Americans will have their work cut out trying to secure a front row start for the feature event. There is lots of interest around the young American hot shot in Christopher Bell who has taken the US scene by storm over the past several seasons as to whether he can adapt his talents to the tight Avalon circuit but for me the American with the runs on the board is former Cunningham camp driver Kyle Hirst. Hirst sealed back to back KWS series championships in the US late last year and picked up the 2014 Victorian 410 sprintcar title at Avalon on his tour down under last year. This year Hirst has signed up with the Monte Motorsport group primarily to follow the World Series Sprintcar season in Australia which has limited his 2015 Avalon appearances to just 1. Having said this Hirst was a regular at Avalon Raceway last season and should have plenty in the memory bank.
Of the regular visitors to Avalon Glen Sutherland seems to be one of the guys carrying form into the event. The Mount Gambier local has contested every sprintcar race at Avalon this season and finished runner up in the Victorian Sprintcar title behind another regular in Daniel Pestka last time out. Consistency has been the model for Sutherland this season and with the right car set-up can take it to the heavy hitter’s tomorrow night. A couple of times this season he has missed the set-up big time in the feature un-doing his nights work but with the right combination can threaten. Pestka like Sutherland is having an excellent Avalon season this year and leads the Essendon Ford track championship from Jamie Veal by around 40 points and should do well tomorrow night. His win in the Victorian Sprintcar Title last time out shows what he is capable of and like Sutherland is certainly a chance to figure as the night goes on.
Victorian Brett Milburn seems to be the state’s hard charger and best chance outside of the elite level and will no doubt be in it right up to the end along with Nic Lacey who at times has shown speed this year without the finishing results. I expect both of the regular girls in Rhiannon Burleigh and Kristy Ellis out mixing it with the boys and putting on a competitive show. Both girls have looked good out front and Burleigh had a fantastic event last time out securing a start in the feature.
Whichever way you look at it, the action is going to be hot come tomorrow night with 62 competitors going for just 1 prize, The President’s Cup.
