FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The 2015 season is flying by and there are only three rounds to go until clubs converge on Ballymore for Finals. The Red Heavies currently have 10 teams in the top 4 of the respective competitions and will be making a strong push for finals over the next couple of weeks. UQ currently leads the Doughty Shield Club Championship and will need some strong performances in the last couple of rounds to secure it for a 6th consecutive season.

On the 27th of June the Heavies will host Wests for a fantastic day of rugby at St Lucia with 11 games being played throughout the day. The regular season finishes with a home round of fixtures against Sunnybank on the 11th July and it would be great to see all supporters down at St Lucia to support our men and women. On the 17th July the UQ Rugby Club will again be hosting the Pre-Test Corporate Luncheon at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event will be on the eve of the Wallabies and Springboks test and is a must attend for all rugby union supporters. The panel for the day includes Tim Horan, Eric Rush and Bobby Skinstad with Greg Martin to emcee the afternoon. To avoid missing out please contact Fraser atadmin@uqrugby.com to secure your spot.

The Halley Appleby Memorial Ball was held on the 30th May this year and was a massive success. This year the Halley Appleby Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ben Geldard who is currently completing his electrical apprenticeship. Thank you to everyone involved for making this event a great success.

On the 25th September the Red Heavies will have 46 tourists departing for England to take on the likes of Loughborough, Cambridge and Oxford Universities. The touring party will also be supporting the Wallabies at the World Cup and will watch them play against Uruguay in Birmingham as well as England and Wales at Twickenham. UPCOMING UQ 7's SEASON

The end of the regular season is fast approaching and all 12 teams at the club are in a great position to make finals. On the 2nd of August as the 2015 season comes to an end, the 2015/16 7’s season will begin.

Plans are being put into action following on from a successful 7’s campaign in 2014/15, headed up by former Australian 7’s representative and current Premier Grade Backs Coach, Andrew Brown.

The club have put exciting plans in place to expand and improve the 7’s program. This will not only provide more opportunities and exposure for players at UQ but will also utilise the quality of players to compete for silverware. In addition to this; the 2015/2016 season will see the UQ Rugby 7’s Men’s team accompanied by a Women’s and Under-18’s team.

HeadSmart Sports Concussion Program introduced to UQ Rugby

The HeadSmart Sports Concussion Program has been introduced to the University of Queensland Rugby Club (UQ Rugby).

The program goes beyond baseline testing and involves several procedures undertaken by players and medical staff as well as education.

UQ LUNCH - 17TH OF JULY

The University of Queensland Rugby Football Club will be hosting its Annual Pre-Test Corporate Luncheon on the eve of the Wallabies Test against the Springboks.

We have locked in a fantastic panel including Eric Rush (former All Black), Tim Horan (former Wallaby) and Bobby Skinstad (former Springbok) as well as Triple M personality Greg Martin to emcee.

UQ RUGBY 2015 TOUR

With England set to host the 2015 World Cup, UQ Rugby have planned a tour to play three well known Universities as well as attend three World Cup matches.

The tour will run from the 26th of September 2015 until Monday 12th of October 2015.

The touring squad will play:
Loughborough on the 30th of September
Oxford on the 5th of October
Cambridge on the 9th of October

The tour will include a Wallabies game in Birmingham's Villa Park as well as two games at Twickenham.

HALLEY APPLEBY MEMORIAL BALL WRAP-UP

On the 30th of May the club celebrated the life of Halley Appleby at the Annual Halley Appleby Memorial Ball. The night was held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and was a great success with nearly 500 people attending this annual event.
Each year the Halley Appleby Scholarship is awarded to a player from the Club who is undertaking a trade or traineeship. Congratulations to this year's recipient, Ben Geldard who was selected from a strong group of applicants to be awarded the 2015 Halley Appleby Scholarship.
