Haudenschild (All Stars), Swindell (NRA Sprint Invaders and Bacon (BOSS) Capture Wild Wins

ROSSBURG, OH (October 12) –Jac Haudenschild (All Star Sprints) lived up to his moniker as ‘the wild child’, while Kevin Swindell (NRA Sprint Invaders) threaded a needle that no one else dare try and Brady Bacon (BOSS Sprints)rode the wall for 25 laps Saturday night as 119 Sprint Cars jammed the Eldora Speedway pit area for the UNOH Sprintacular.

After capturing the six-lap dash race, Haudenschild earned himself the pole starting position for the All Stars’ 30-lap season-ending event.   With his mastery of the Eldora .500-mile clay oval well chronicled, everyone predicted a yawner.

Haudenschild didn’t let the naysayers down, as he darted into nearly a full straightaway lead over the field.

That lead was minimized when Sam Hafertepe, Jr. and Caleb Helms collided in turn one to bring out the red flag and halt the race.  In the melee, Kevin Swindell protected his runner-up positioning by doing a series of spins and narrowly missing the stopped cars.   In doing that; however, Swindell suffered some wing damage that virtually took him out of the running.

On the restart, Haudenschild again showed his prowess but lapped traffic soon came into play, and the field inched their way into Haudenschild’s playground.  Randy Hannagan was the first to show his cards and narrow the lead.   He brought with him Shane Stewart which led to a three-way battle that had the crowd literally on their feet.

With ten laps to go the trio swapped the lead multiple times around the track, pulling the infamous Eldora ‘slide job’ on each other, yet when they would cross the finish line, Haudenschild would manage to inch back out front.

It continued that way right up to the closing laps, as eventual series champion Dale Blaney decided to join the fun; bringing with him Tim Shaffer to set up a wild five car battle to the checkered.

In the waning laps, all five had heavy lapped traffic enter the mix; finding them using the entire 90’ width of Eldora.

Actually tagging the wall coming out of turn four, Haudenschild nosed ahead of Hannagan to take the victory, his ninth career All Star win at Eldora, by .047 seconds over Hannagan.   Blaney, who swapped engines after time trials, crossed the line third, followed in close order by Stewart and Shaffer.

Multiple caution periods added to the attrition rate during the NRA night capper, but that didn’t diminish the intensity of the race; particularly up front.   Butch Schroeder, who captured the NRA title last month, shot into the early lead and looked to be en route to his fifth career NRA event on the Eldora high banks.

But, enter Kevin Swindell.   Fresh from the All Star race, Swindell had insider knowledge on the track conditions, and near the half-way point of the 20-lap chase, reeled in Schroeder.

After Swindell pulled up alongside Schroeder to identify himself as a contender, the defense was on.   Schroeder and Swindell slid each other through the turns, and then, with seven laps to go, the pair encroached upon lapped traffic which sent both of them to the low side.   Schroeder, in trying to save his lead, went what seemed as low as you could go in turn three.   Swindell was convinced there was even more room there and somehow put his car between Schroeder and the inside wall to take the lead he was to hold to the finish.

Schroeder hung on for second, while Chuck Hebing came in as a newcomer and pulled off a strong third place finish.   Jared Horstman and Bryan Sebetto completed the top five.

As the winged warriors of speed completed their final laps of the 2013 season at Eldora, the non-winged BOSS (Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series) moved to the track with their 24-car starting field that had been pared down from the 54 entries.

Thinking that the previous two features had set a standard unable to be beat, the non-wingers proved that to be a fallacy.    Luke Hall out powered Matt Westfall at the dropping of the green flag on, what was soon to be, a 25-lap non-stop affair.

Westfall never let Hall out of his sight, and waged a wild battle up front that was quickly joined by Bacon.   As Westfall and Bacon fought for the runner-up honor, Hall looked to be in clear sailing.  However, Westfall and Bacon found themselves getting quicker in their battle and soon perched themselves on Hall’s tail.   In a daring, up against the wall move, Bacon swept by both of them on lap nine.

That momentum remained with Bacon as he began to upon up some distance over the field.   And, as quick was Bacon became, Chris Windom became even quicker.  Buried deep in the field (12th) at the start, Windom had his work cut out for him, but he was relentless in his charge to the front.   He disposed of Hall and then challenged Westfall in a battle that he won out with ten laps to go.

He tried to get up to Bacon, but ran out of time and had to settle for runner-up honors, as Westfall hung on to third.   Dallas Hewitt and Gary Taylor came on strong in the closing laps to complete the top five.

COMMON’ YET ‘VARIED’ ARE KEY WORDS FOR SEASON CLOSING UNOH SPRINTACULAR AT ELDORA

image002.png‘COMMON’ YET ‘VARIED’ ARE KEY WORDS FOR SEASON CLOSING UNOH SPRINTACULAR AT ELDORA

All Cars Will be Sprint Cars, But Specs and Format Vary Among Three Participating Sanctioning Bodies

ROSSBURG, OH (October 10) – For Saturday’s (October 12) season-closing UNOH Sprintacular at Eldora Speedway there is one common element, Sprint Car, but from thereon ‘common’ switches to ‘variety’.

From aerodynamic wing permission, to engine size, to tire rules, to weight limits and right on down to race format each of the competing sanctioning bodies will present their version of Sprint Car racing Saturday night.   Participating in the Sprintacular will be the All Star Sprints, NRA Sprint Invaders and BOSS (Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series), as they each close out their 2013 racing season as well.

Top mounted aerodynamic wings of up to 25 square feet are permitted by All Star and NRA guidelines, but the BOSS group remains wingless, opting to go with the oft-referred to ‘traditional’ status.  Winged race cars were unheard of until 1958, when Ohio’s Jim Cushman began racing with his homemade version at Columbus Motor Speedway.   Since then, the majority of the nation’s Sprint Car organizations have adopted them; however, BOSS and a select few other sanctioning bodies have remained true to the roots of the Sprint Car racing.

When it comes to engines, none of the three groups share common ground.   The All Stars have a 410 cubic inch restriction and NRA competitors are limited to 360 cubic inches; however, the BOSS group places no restrictions on the engine, other than it must be a small block.

With their abbreviated rule book, the BOSS fraternity has no tire rule in place.   Such is not the case for the All Stars and NRA.   They each have contracted with Hoosier Racing Tire for individual tire specs, with applicable tire compounding and/or stamped tires.

All Star Sprints have a minimum weight requirement of 1375 pounds with the driver and the NRA standard is 1475 pounds; but again, the abridged BOSS rule book places no weight restrictions upon the competing car and driver.

Beyond the car construction, Saturday’s diversity carries over to the race format; allowing the fans multiple opportunities to witness the unfolding of race line-ups throughout the evening.

Each group goes about determining race line-ups in different ways.   The All Star Sprints utilize single-car, two lap time trial runs, while the NRA Sprint Invaders use their ‘hot lap’ session as multi-car qualifying sessions; four cars at a time on the track recording lap times.   A fan favorite pre-race draw of numbers is how the BOSS Sprints are lined up.

Common, yet different, every car competing Saturday evening on Eldora’s legendary .500-mile clay oval will be classified as a Sprint Car; running under the guidelines of their respective organization.

Of note to the race fan is the earlier starting time for Saturday’s end to the 60th year of racing at Eldora.   Because of the cooler seasonal temperatures, the hot lap sessions take to the track at 4:30 p.m. with the first green flag of competition scheduled to drop at 6 p.m.

Complete event and ticket information for the UNOH Sprintacular may be obtained by visiting the track’s website www.EldoraSpeedway.com, or by calling the speedway office at (937) 338-3815.   Additionally, race fans and race teams can get behind-the-scenes access by following @EldoraSpeedway on Twitter, hitting ‘Like’ at Facebook.com/EldoraSpeedway and view video highlights at YouTube.com/EldoraSpeedwayInc.  The Eldora Speedway app for the iPhone, iPad and Android is available for download via iTunes and Google Play.

SMORGASBORD OF SPRINTS TO CLOSE OUT ELDORA’S 60TH SEASON

ROSSBURG, OH (October 8) – A smorgasbord of Sprint Car racing will close out Eldora Speedway’s 60th season of racing Saturday night (October 12) in grand style with the UNOH Sprintacular.   The bountiful menu includes three touring sanctioning bodies (All Star Sprints, NRA Sprint Invaders, BOSS Sprints), winged (All Stars, NRA) and non-winged (BOSS) Sprint Cars, engine sizes of 410 (All Stars, BOSS) and 360 cubic inches (NRA) and two season-ending point chases (All Stars, BOSS).

Of the three groups, the All Star Sprints have the most storied history.   Since Brad Doty won their debut on May 3, 1981, the All Stars have competed an additional 131 times, with 41 different drivers advancing to victory lane.  Headlining that list is Kenny Jacobs with 21 triumphs, followed in order by Joey Saldana with 11 and the groups most recent Eldora winner (June 22), Jac Haudenschild with eight.

The 360 Sprint division came on the scene in 1994, and after swapping around sanctioning bodies over the first five years, the NRA Sprint Invaders was established as the group of choice in 1999.   Since the April 23, 1994 debut won by Rick Daugherty, the 360 Sprints have contested 114 feature events, with 36 different drivers sharing victory honors.  Tim Allison heads up that list with 14 checkered flags, while Phil Gressman sits closely behind at 13 wins and Kyle Sauder rests in third with 11.

For the upstart BOSS (Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series) group, this will be their second Eldora appearance.  The three-year old group made their Eldora debut during last year’s Blue Collar Base, with Luke Hall taking home that win.

THREE POINT CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED FOLLOWING SATURDAY’S COMPETITION

ROSSBURG, OH (October 8) – Saturday’s (October 12) UNOH Sprintacular will be the deciding factor in three point chases.   On the line will be the All Star Sprints National and Ohio Region titles, while the BOSS Sprints will bring their hotly contested point battle to the .500-mile clay oval.  Rounding out the ‘all Sprint Car’ tripleheader will be the NRA Sprint Invaders, who crowed their 2013 champion, Butch Schroeder, earlier this fall.

Dale Blaney enters Saturday’s fray with a 37 point margin over defending champion Tim Shaffer in the All Star Sprints national point chase, while Shaffer holds a slim three-point margin over Blaney in the group’s Ohio Region point battle.

For Blaney, a championship title would be number four for him, and tie him with Frankie Kerr, Kenny Jacobs, Chad Kemenah and Shaffer who sit on top of the championship roster with that many crowns.   If Shaffer drives out of Eldora with the All Star Sprints championship, it would be title number five and put him on the top of the list.

After a brief introduction in 2011, last season marked the first point-chasing schedule for the non-winged BOSS (Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series), with Dustin Smith taking home that initial championship.   The 2013 campaign has not been as successful for Smith, who is buried 13th in the cumulative chase.   Coming into Saturday’s contest, five drivers have a legitimate shot at capturing the BOSS championship.

Second generation driver Tony Beaber is clinging to an eighteen point margin over Brandon Spithaler, who in turn sits sixteen markers ahead of Mike Miller.   Completing the top five are Aaron Middaugh, 51 points from the top and Kirk Jeffries, 80 points away from a title.

It will a non-points event for the NRA Sprint Invaders; however 2013 champion Butch Schroeder will take to Eldora’s famed high banks in search of career win number five.  Schroeder’s championship found him leading J.R. Stewart, Beau Stewart, Jared Horstman and Shawn Dancer.

COOLER FALL NIGHTS PROMPTS EARLIER START TIME FOR ELDORA FINALE

Modified/Late Model Event Inked for April 12, 2014

ROSSBURG, OH (October 5) – Heavy Saturday morning rains, combined with a dire Saturday evening/Sunday morning forecast prompted Eldora/UMP DIRTcar officials to postpone day number three of the UMP DIRTcar National Championships.  The event has been moved to April 12, 2014, with full details for the Modified and Late Model competition to be announced soon.

Prior to the rains, eight-$1,000 to win Modified features were completed over the course of Thursday and Friday, with Brian Ruhlman doubling up for two wins.   Single wins were captured by Bryan Barber, Devin Gilpin, Jerry Bowersock, Jonathan Taylor, Matt Mevert and Kent Robinson.

A QUARTET OF $1,000 WINNERS KICK-OFF ELDORA’S UMP DIRTcar NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Barber, Bowersock, Gilpin and Ruhlman Prevail Over 116 Cars from Ten States and Canada

ROSSBURG, OH (October 3) – On a typical race night, about one-third of the field gets to compete in the headlining feature event.   The certainly wasn’t the caseThursday night in Eldora Speedway’s opening leg of the UMP DIRTcar National Championships, as 96 of the 116 competing Modifieds advanced to not one, but four headliners.  Capturing $1,000 pay days were Bryan Barber, Jerry Bowersock, Devin Gilpin and Brian Ruhlman.

The route to those four main events entailed eight preliminary heat races and four B-Features and that will be the same map to be used Friday night in leg number two of the three-day event.

A driver’s best finish over the two nights will then be used to line-up Saturday’s ‘alphabet soup’ of feature events; with the best 20 locked into one of the 32-starting positions.   The balance will come from the preceding features, along with four ‘point provisional’ positions.

That bodes well for Barber, Bowersock, Gilpin and Ruhlman who pretty much locked themselves in Thursday.   The balance of the field that represented ten states and Canada will get shot number two on Friday.   Joining the Modifieds Saturday will be the UMP DIRTcar Late Models as both feature events that night reward the winner with $5,000.

Barber kicked off the night with a strong run that was made a little more difficult in the closing laps.   He had built up a comfortable margin over Ray Bollinger and Aaron Orr that was eliminated two laps from the finish as a spinning car collected both of them and relegated them to the pit area.   That moved up Chad Kinder and Jacob Hawkins into second and third, and when the checkered flag flew that was how they crossed the line.

Bowersock used his knowledge of Eldora and his multiple championships to ride him to a strong win over Andy Sprague and Jimmy Payne, while Gilpin’s thrilling victory came at the expense of Dean Hoffman and Matt Mevert.

Closing out the night was Ruhlman in a daring last-lap pass over Matt Westfall, with a rapidly closing Kent Robinson right there in third.

96 Drivers to Compete in Four $1,000-to-win Features Thursday & Friday, Late Models Join Saturday

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 29) – Opening the door for more faces on Eldora Speedway’s revered victory stage, Thursday and Friday (October 3 & 4) night’s opening legs of the UMP DIRTcar National Championships will each see 96 Modified drivers lined up into one of four 24-car A-feature events.  Each of the unprecedented four nightly main events will reward the winner with a $1,000 pay day and valuable national UMP DIRTcar points will be up for grabs.

The unique format calls for the field to be split into eight groups; with each group’s heat races determined through multi-car time trials.  Drivers finishing 1-9 will line up into an A-Feature, with the balance of the field relegated to a B-Feature, which will see an additional six drivers advancing.   Heats 1 and 2 will determine the first B and A-features, heats 3 and 4, the second, and so on.

More importantly, the finishes from the two preliminary nights will be used to determine positioning in Saturday’s alphabet soup of features that culminates with a 25-lap, $5,000 to win finale.   The course of the weekend could shake up not only the UMP DIRTcar national point chase, but the Eldora points race as well.

Joining the Modifieds and their quest for the National championship on Saturday will be the UMP DIRTcar Late Models in a $5,000 to win, single day program.

Complete event and ticket purchase details, only $10 Thursday and Friday and $20 on Saturday, may be found at the track’s website, www.EldoraSpeedway.com.

Three USAC National Divisions Impress Heart Four Crown Nationals Crowd

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 21)  -- Eldora Speedway’s 32nd annual Four Crown Nationals produced some new faces in victory lane Saturday night, as Chris Windom (Sprint, Silver Crown) and Rico Abreu (Midget) wheeled to impressive wins.

With Friday’s card falling to the weather, it was an all USAC (United States Auto Club) affair, as the Indianapolis based sanctioning body boasted their three National divisions before a hearty crowd.

The Midget division kicked off the evening’s feature events on the .500-mile clay oval with Bryan Clauson shooting out front, followed by Bobby East and Abreu.   Clauson began increasing his lead as Abreu moved into challenge East, with a quickly approaching Christopher Bell up to fourth.

Suddenly Clauson dropped off the pace with a broken water pump, allowing Abreu to inherit the lead, with Bell tagging right behind.   That duo instantly set up a battle that had the crown on their feet.   Back and forth they swapped the lead, only inches from the concrete wall.   Abreu would be in command at the finish line, but the balance of the trip around the legendary oval, it was back and forth.

Time ran out for Bell, despite a last lap effort; crossing the line .245 seconds behind Abreu.   Tracy Hines moved up to third at the finish, followed by East and Dave Darland.

For Hines, that was the highlight of his night, as things went downhill from that point.

When the green flag flew on the Sprint Car finale, it was Daron Clayton taking total command of the early running.   And then, it was a strange turn of events that had the outcome of the finish in doubt right through the checkered flag.

First it was Chase Stockon, who after mounting a challenge on Clayton for the top spot, retired suddenly to the pit area during a caution period to allow Hines a shot at Clayton.   Hines repeatedly moved in close, but could never complete the deal.   However, after making contact with a lapped car six laps from the finish, Clayton flipped violently in turn two.

That turned the lead over to Hines, with Windom and Jac Haudenschild completing the top three.   Windom was reeling in Hines with Haudenschild in tow, and then coming down for the checkered flag, Hines made contact with the turn three wall to send him into a series of wild flips and out of the race.

After that turn of events, and knowing the veteran Haudenschild was on his tail, Windom was aggressively cautious on the final lap; the lap the produced his first-ever Eldora win.   Haudenschild finished .613 seconds behind in runner-up, with Darland, Clauson and Robert Ballou completing the top five.

Like many drivers doing double and triple duty throughout the night, Windom dashed from the Sprint Car victory lane to get behind the wheel of his Silver Crown machine and the final race on the busy card.

It was Bobby East darting into the early lead of the night capper, with Bell right behind him and Windom in third.   East slipped off the pace somewhat on lap three, allowing a rocketing Windom to dart from third to first in one-half of a lap.   After tasting victory once, Windom was hungry for more and he set sail towards the checkered.

However, it was Hines again mounting a challenge towards the front, in hopes of erasing the memories of the race just prior.   Hines inched closer and closer, but with two laps to go in the 50-lap chase, he again made contact with the outer wall and again flipped viciously off of turn four, in an almost identical location as a few minutes prior.

As he walked dejectedly back to the pit area, Windom was able to hold off Matt Westfall in the final two laps to take his second Eldora win within an hour.   Shane Cockrum, Taylor Ferns and Dave Darland completed the top five.

BALTES’ USAC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION TO TAKE PLACE PRIOR TO SATURDAY’S FOUR CROWN NATIONALS

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 17) Earlier this year it was announced that legendary Eldora Speedway founder Earl Baltes was joining seven other individuals as 2013 inductees into the USAC (United States Auto Club) Hall of Fame.  Two previous attempts to present Baltes with his distinguished honor have been thwarted; so appropriately, the induction ceremony and presentation will be incorporated into the pre-race ceremonies for Saturday’s (Sept. 21) Four Crown Nationals.

The two-day spectacular is the third oldest event on the annual Eldora slate; having begun in 1981 under the guidance of Baltes and Dayton’s (OH) Johnny Vance.  While Saturday’s menu includes all three of USAC’s National divisions (Midget, Sprint & Silver Crown), the busy weekend kicks off the night before (Sept. 20) with a doubleheader featuring the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Series and the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds.

During his tenure at the helm of Eldora (1954-2004), Baltes worked closely with USAC and was twice honored as the USAC ‘Race Organizer of the Year’.   After introducing Eldora fans to USAC racing on April 22, 1962, Baltes then presented another 286 USAC events; not only at his beloved Eldora Speedway, but at an additional six different race tracks.

Undoubtedly the crowning moment of the Baltes/USAC pairing was in 2003 when the feisty Baltes shocked the world with the ‘Mopar Million’.  With a total payoff of $1,000,000 it became the richest Sprint Car race in history.

Baltes stepped away from the promotional reigns at the conclusion of the 2004 racing season when he sold the historic facility to three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart.

As was the case through all those years, Earl’s wife, Berneice, will be by his side when he accepts the accolades Saturday evening.

SALDANA ENTERS WoO PORTION OF FOUR CROWN NATIONALS WITH CONFIDENCE

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 17) – Joey Saldana is anxious for the World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series appearance Friday night (Sept. 20) as part of the 32ndannual Four Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway.   Since the WoO travelling series was incorporated into the two-day Four Crown in 2007 Saldana has won three feature events.  No one else has one more than once.

Saldana’s most memorable of those three wins was 2011.   During the July Kings Royal of that year, the Brownsburg, IN veteran was involved in a spectacular crash that left him with serious arm injuries and knocked him out of the driver’s seat until two-days before the Four Crown.   He ventured to Hartford, MI and promptly returned to victory lane; a fete he then duplicated at Eldora.

At that time he was wheeling a Kasey Kahne owned Sprint Car, but now steers out of the Dan Motter stable.   Although it is a new team, Saldana brings a level of confidence into Eldora.  Currently fourth in the 2013 cumulative WoO point chase, the second generation driver is the third leading WoO feature winner at Eldora with 11 wins.  His most recent Eldora victory came on the Knight Before the Kings Royal last season.

On the WoO trail this season, Saldana has one feature win, but 41 top-ten finishes and five quick time awards.

The WoO Sprints will be joined by the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds in Friday’s doubleheader, while Saturday’s slate includes USAC’s (United States Auto Club) three National divisions – Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown.

ABSOLUTE PARITY IN ELDORA UMP DIRTCAR MODIFIED ACTION – 7 WINNERS IN 7 FEATURES

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 17) –With Friday’s (Sept. 20) participation in the opening leg of the Four Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway, it will be the UMP DIRTcar Modified’s final opportunity to garner track time prior to the richest Eldora event in their history (UMP DIRTcar National Championships October 3, 4 and 5).   And it comes during the most competitive season in the 23-year history of the division at the legendary speed plant.

Thus far into the 2013 campaign there have been seven feature events completed, with an equal number of winners.   No one has duplicated a victory.

Ironically of the seven wins, five were collected by former Eldora champions (Jon Henry, Jerry Bowersock, Brian Ruhlman, Joey Kramer and Jeff Babcock), while the other two were by drivers capturing their first-ever Eldora wins (Brian Post and Ryan Sutter).

That parity could very well continue into the Four Crown as this week’s announcement regarding the UMP DIRTcar National Championships and a record payoff in excess of $63,000 for the early October event is expected to bring in outsiders in their attempt to gain valuable Eldora track time.

Joining the Modifieds in Friday’s doubleheader action will be the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, while the two-day extravaganza continues Saturday with the three National divisions of the United States Auto Club (USAC) – Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown.

AT 32nd ANNUAL – FOUR CROWN NATIONALS HOLDS HONOR OF ELDORA’S THIRD OLDEST ANNUAL EVENT

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 16) – Already steep in heritage and diversity, Eldora Speedway’s third oldest annual event, the Four Crown Nationals, continues this weekend (September 20 & 21) for rendition number 32.   Twice interrupted by rain, a total of 120 feature events have been contested over the 31 year run, with 57 different drivers sharing victory lane honors.

And, as tradition prevails, the busy menu of complete racing programs each night represents a smorgasbord of open wheel racing.

Friday will see the travelling World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series in a double header with the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, while Saturday’s tripleheader features USAC’s (United States Auto Club) three National divisions – Midgets, Sprints and Silver Crown.

The five divisions offer race fans quite a spectrum of racing from wheelbase size to engine cubic inch displacement to top mounted aerodynamic wings versus no wings.

With wheelbases ranging from 66 to 76 inches, the Midgets are the smallest of the five classes, while a Sprint Car wheelbase measures between 83 and 90 inches and a Silver Crown car has a 96.5 inch minimum wheelbase.   The Modified chassis comes in as the largest with a wheelbase specification of 108 – 112 inches.

Power-wise, the Midget engine measures between 161-174 cubic inches, Sprint Cars max out a 410 cubic inches and Silver Crown cars are limited to 360 cubic inches.   The Modifieds do not have a cubic inch displacement minimum or maximum.

The wings are standard for WoO, while USAC policy prohibits their use.

HEWITT’S FOUR CROWN WIN RECORD NOT IN IMMINENT DANGER; DARLAND AND HINES ATTEMPT TO MOVE CLOSER

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 16) – It may be fifteen years since his historic Four Crown Nationals ‘sweep’ at Eldora, and an equal number of years since visiting the famed speedway’s hallowed victory lane, but Jack Hewitt’s record of all-time leading winner of 31-year old event is not any imminent danger of being broken.

Of the 57 drivers that have carried the checkered flag at the end of 120 Four Crown Nationals feature events, Hewitt, of nearby Troy, OH has accomplished the fete 19 times.   Broken down, those wins include three in USAC (United States Auto Club) Midget, five in USAC Sprint, eight in USAC Silver Crown and three in UMP DIRTcar Modified competition.

His closest rivals to that total, Dave Darland (7) and Tracy Hines (5) remain active along the USAC trail and are expected to do triple-duty during this weekend’s (September 20 & 21) 32nd annual running of the Four Crown Nationals, in their attempt to inch closer to Hewitt’s (currently inactive) total.

Of that duo, Darland is the most diverse, with Four Crown wins in each of USAC’s National divisions; four Silver Crown, two Midget and one Sprint), while Hines’ five victories have been spread between the Midget (two) and Sprint (three) divisions.

Hines recorded a Sprint conquest during last year’s running to up his total; while Darland has not tasted a Four Crown checkered flag since his 2009 Silver Crown success.

PITTMAN AND SCHATZ TO CONTINUE ROLLER COASTER WoO POINT CHASE AT ELDORA FOUR CROWN

ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 16) – Daryn Pittman has led the 2013 World of Outlaws (WoO) STP Sprint Car Series points chase since the onset of the season, and pretty much has had clear sailing towards his first-ever WoO title; at least until five-time champion Donny Schatz began his current hot streak.   It has turned the championship chase into a roller coaster ride for the duo as they enter Friday’s (September 20) 32nd annual Four Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway.

At one time looking insurmountable, Pittman’s lead was reduced to 19 points by Schatz over the Labor Day weekend, but continued steady runs have moved Pittman back to a 70-point advantage as they enter Eldora.

On the season, Schatz has 20 victories compared to Pittman’s 8, but consistency in preliminary event competition has proven to be Pittman’s key to success.  The wild point race has seen Pittman capture thirteen quick times this season compared to Schatz’s 3.  However, in heat race action Schatz has amassed 19 wins compared to Pittman’s 10.

Pittman returned to Eldora’s victory podium earlier this season during the Outlaw Thunder weekend; while Schatz has not tasted Eldora achievement since wearing the coveted Kings Royal Crown in 2009.

The friendly rivalry being shared by the twosome carries over their car owners; each heavily involved in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition.   Kasey Kahne owns Pittman’s team, while Tony Stewart is the pioneer of Schatz’s team.
