Bent’s back & Ferguson takes memorial double @ Nyora.
Media Release February 2014
Bent’s back & Ferguson takes memorial double @ Nyora.
Simon Bent was back like he’d never been away, pushing his Falcon to victory lane over a stellar field of Open Sedans while Stuart Ferguson took a unique back to back win in the prestigious Geoff Moule Memorial for Mini-Sprints last night at Nyora Raceway (Feb 22nd). Also on the winners list was Brendan Miller (Crash ‘n’ Bash) and Donald Young (Junior Sedans).
On a cool night a large and appreciative crowd witnessed some brilliant racing and occasional crash action from a jam packed pit of racers.
Sharing equal top billing on the night was the Total Autos Pakenham Open Sedan Challenge and the Victory Lane Racegear Geoff Moule Memorial.
The biggest field of Open sedans seen for some time from near and far assembled for a series of heats that were won by Damien Miller, Jay Nicolaisen (2 wins), and Simon Bent.
In the feature race, Bent, who’d parked his racecar for the past couple of seasons so he could concentrate on his children’s efforts, launched off the outside of the front row and was never headed despite huge pressure from Miller behind him who was relentless in his pursuit. Both these drivers have a very spectacular driving style and kept the crowd entertained throughout the race.
Bent had a narrow escape when he became entangled with a back marker and spun to the infield. Luckily officials deemed the slower car had caused the prang and so Bent was restarted still at the head of the field and made the most of his reprieve.
Following the lead pair of Bent and Miller across the line was Josh Brown after a tense multi car battle with Nicolaisen (4th), Dale Hallett and Wayne Gilsenan who both failed to finish elevating Jaedn Alberni to a top five finish.
The mighty Mini-Sprints also had their biggest field for some time and while Stuart Ferguson was forced to will an ailing car to the win last year, this year there was no such issues as he dominated from the drop of the green to take back to back wins in this most sought after event. Matt Parsons was again on the podium after throwing out a mid race challenge in lapped traffic while Luke Ferguson driving last year’s winning car completed the podium. Kevin Bomford and Wayne Hurford completed the top five after a race long battle while pre-race equal favourite Owen Milton was the race’s first retirement.
“Two in a row is fantastic. This really means a lot.” Stated Ferguson fresh from the win.
Heat wins were scored by Stuart Ferguson and Milton who took three wins.
The Crash ‘n’ Bash boys and girls were out to entertain and did exactly that as Brendan Miller took the main event win from Lenny “Two Wheels” Bonnici and Allen Treble.
Earlier in the night Miller had been deliberately driven up into the wall by a back marker within sight of the chequered flag and David Parker had turned turtle in his Falcon.
Heat wins had fallen the way of Miller, Treble (x 2), Gavan Dorian, Goose Young and Bonnici.
The Junior sedans completed the speedway action where Donald Young took back to back features this time ahead of Shona Bent and Nyora newcomer Wayne Furmston.
Young and Bent shared the heat wins.
Next event at Nyora will be March 15th with more Open Sedan action, a big field of Wingless Sprints, the thundering SDAV Hot Rods and of course the Junior Sedans.
