Dietz caps ASCS Frontier championship with Electric City checkers
By Andrew Kunas
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Phil Dietz put an exclamation point on his 2015 ASCS Frontier Region championship season when he dominated Saturday's Montana Round-Up finale at Electric City Speedway and led all 25 laps of the A-Feature event to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The Laurel, Montana driver, piloting the Dietz Prevost Racing No. 72 Kistler-powered Maxim, drew the pole position for the main event in the Top 8 redraw right off the bat after posting the top passing points score in heat race action. No one threatened the now five-time Montana sprint car champion for the lead at any point during the race.
Dietz won his four previous Montana championships under four different banners. Dietz, 31, won the Montana Sprint Tour title in 2003, the Big Sky Sprint Tour title in 2007, the Big Sky Sprints championship in 2012 and the inaugural ASCS Frontier Region championship in 2013.
Dietz won June 19th at Electric City Speedway after the initial winner was disqualified post-race, but Dietz crossed the finish line first on two occasions later on, taking checkered flags at Gallatin Speedway on August 14th and September 12th. The four victories followed a winless 2014 season.
Meanwhile, second place in the point standings unofficially changed hands. Billings, Mont. driver David Hoiness entered the evening with a 44-point advantage over Leduc, Alberta's Skylar Gee. Hoiness, however, was running in the Top 5 when he went for a wild tumble entering the front stretch after apparent contact with another car with 13 laps completed.
After the disasterous turn of events for Hoiness, Gee then passed Joe Perry on the final corner on Lap 25 to steal second place aboard the Gee Racing No. 99 AMS-powered Triple X. That pass earned Gee an additional seven points and unofficially put him six points ahead of Hoiness for second place in the standings. It was also Gee's second runner-up finish in as many nights, also finishing right behind winner Joe Ramaker on Friday.
Perry, out of Billings, settled for a solid third place finish aboard his father Chuck Perry's No. 28 Santos & Sons-powered Maxim. Perry, who won his first career sprint car main event June 6th at Electric City Speedway, moved into eighth place in the point standings to close out the season.
Lethbridge, Alberta's Bill Boyce, who won an ASCS Frontier Region main event at the Great Falls facility in 2014, came from ninth to finish fourth in his own No. 1 Shark-powered Eagle. Former Montana champion Trever Kirkland of Helena, Mont. had an impressive run, coming from 13th to finish fifth aboard the Kirkland Racing No. 37 Shark-powered Triple X. Kirkland's finish was good enough to move him past the 12th finishing Jeremy McCune into sixth place in the point standings.
Alberta visitors Trevor Turnbull, Casey Adams, Dennis MacEachern and David Miller were followed by Billings driver Josh Ostermiller, who rounded out the Top 10 after starting from the outside of the front row.
Bryan Brown, who unofficially has held on to finish fourth in the points, won the 12-lap B-Feature and was followed by his father Jerry Brown, who also transfered to the A-Feature along with Roger Cummings and Leroy Brush.
Adams won the evening's first eight-lap heat race and Hoiness followed suit in Heat 2. Cody Masse's victory in Heat 3 was the first checkered flag of any kind in the Alberta teenager's young sprint car racing career. MacEachern won the final heat race. Dietz came from the seventh starting position to finish second behind Hoiness in Heat 2, earning him the evening's top passing points score, a 118.
In all, 19 ASCS Frontier Region events were run, including two with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. Including the National Tour events, nine different drivers picked up wins in sprint car races in the state of Montana in 2015.

By Andrew Kunas
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Former series champion Joe Ramaker picked up his first win of the season in Friday's ASCS Frontier Region sprint car main event at the Montana Round-Up at Electric City Speedway.
The Choteau, Montana driver, who won the ASCS Frontier Region title in 2014, led all but one of the 25 laps around the Great Falls clay oval, earning his first win in just over a year aboard the Ramaker Racing No. 98 Ostrich-powered J&J.
After the initial start was called back by a yellow flag for a collision, Joe Perry of Billings led the first lap before being overtaken by Ramaker, who passed him for the lead exiting Turn 4 on the high side of the race track. Ramaker was never seriously challenged despite dealing with heavy traffic at times throughout the race.
Skylar Gee of Leduc, Alberta moved into second place and appeared to be gaining ground on Ramaker before time ran out. Gee, however, earned his best finish in Montana this season aboard the Gee Racing No. 99 AMS-powered Triple X. Tenth starting David Hoiness of Billings took advantage a great restart and moved from seventh to eventually take third in the Hoiness Racing No. 27DD Wesmar-powered J&J. Hoiness is trying to hold off Gee to keep second place in the ASCS Frontier Region points standings in the final weekend of action in 2015. Hoiness unofficially sits 44 points ahead of Gee.
Laurel, Mont.'s Phil Dietz, who has already locked up the 2015 series championship, finished fourth in the Dietz Prevost Racing No. 72 Kistler-powered Maxim. Alberta visitor Casey Adams finished fifth in the Adams Racing Inc. No. 12a BeL-powerd Maxim.
Perry, Trever Kirkland, Bill Boyce, Josh Ostermiller and David Miller rounded out the Top 10.
Kirkland's run to his seventh place finish came from the 17th starting position, this after winning the B-Feature event just to get into the main event of the evening. Bryan Brown, Kyle van Ulden and Darren Smith all transferred with him. Originally scheduled for 12 laps, the crash plagued B-Feature ended up only having ten laps run due to time concerns.
Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Ramaker, Dietz, Dennis MacEachern and Gee. Adams earned the high passing points score of the evening with a score of 113 that he earned when he drove from the sixth starting position to finish second in Heat 2. In the Top 8 re-draw, MacEachern ended up on the outside of Perry on the front row for the A-Feature, only to fall out after suffering a flat tire.
The ASCS Frontier Region closes its 2015 season Saturday with the final night of the Montana Round-Up at Electric City Speedway.

By Andrew Kunas
COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - The Frontier Region of the American Sprint Car Series closes its third season of competition with the rescheduled Montana Round-Up at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, featuring two nights of sprint car racing this weekend.
With two events remaining, Phil Dietz of Laurel, Montana has clinched the series championship for 2015, his fifth sprint car title in Montana and second under the ASCS banner. Dietz carries a 359-point lead over Billings, Montana driver David Hoiness, with 300 points being the maximum a driver can earn over two nights.
While a championship has been clinched, there is still racing to be done and races to be won. After it was cancelled due to poor weather on Labor Day weekend, the series and Electric City Speedway agreed to reschedule the Montana Round-Up for two nights on September 25th and 26th and give the fans in Great Falls one more weekend of sprint car action this season.
The events scheduled for May 15th and 16th at Electric City Speedway were cancelled due to bad weather as well and were rescheduled for June 5th and 6th. Washington's J.J. Hickle extended his season opening win streak to three on the 5th before Joe Perry of Billings scored his first career sprint car main event win the next night.
The series returned for regularly scheduled events two weeks later. Dietz saw his nearly two year dry spell finally end on June 19th when after crossing the line second he was awarded the victory after the post-race disqualification of another driver. Oregon's Garen Linder earned his first career ASCS Frontier Region triumph the next night. On July 17th, Aaron Reutzel of Texas won the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at Electric City Speedway.
Dietz is the only driver to have qualified for every single ASCS Frontier Region main event, including National Tour races. Along with three wins Dietz has been insanely consistent, missing the Top 5 only a couple of times all season. Combine that with everyone else having a few bad nights and Dietz has an early lock on the championship. Along with his June 19th win, Dietz picked up wins at Gallatin Speedway on August 14th and again September 12th at the Big Sky Supernationals.
Solid runs can secure second place for Hoiness, who earned wins on June 12th at Gallatin Speedway, and on June 13th and August 1st at Billings Motorsports Park. He currently sits 51 points ahead of Alberta's Skylar Gee. Bryan Brown of East Helena, Mont. and Josh Ostermiller of Billings currently sit fourth and fifth and are looking to lock up Top 5 points finishes this weekend.
Cars from Montana, Wyoming, Alberta and elsewhere are expected both nights in Great Falls. Street stocks, super stocks and two classes of modifieds will be on the card with the ASCS Frontier Region sprint cars both nights. Tickets each night are $15 for adults, $12 for kids ages 12 to 17 and just $3 for the younger kids. Racing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. both nights.
The Frontier Region of the American Sprint Car Series, presented in part by Speedmart Inc. is a winged 360 dirt sprint car tour racing around the state of Montana and beyond. BELGRADE, Mont. - Phil Dietz continued his march towards a fifth Montana sprint car championship when he won the Big Sky Supernationals at Gallatin Speedway in ASCS Frontier Region competition.
It was the third win of the season for the Laurel, Montana driver, piloting the Dietz Prevost Racing No. 72 Kistler-powered Maxim, this coming after a winless 2014 season. With the win, Dietz now holds a commanding 269-point lead with four scheduled events left. The 2013 ASCS Frontier Region champion also won titles under different banners in Montana in 2003, 2007 and 2012.
Dietz started the 25-lap feature on the pole after the Top 8 redraw. Billings driver Joe Perry, who was the high points scorer in heat race action earlier in the evening, challenged Dietz for the lead midway through the event, leading Lap 12 by the nose of his car, but Dietz motored back ahead on the next lap and didn't look back from there.
Perry eventually slipped back to third place as Helena, Montana's Trever Kirkland moved into the second position. While unable to seriously challenge Dietz, Kirkland still took a season best runner-up finish aboard the Kirkland Racing No. 37 Shark-powered Triple X. Perry settled for a podium finish aboard his father Chuck's No. 28 Santos & Sons-powered Maxim despite losing a tire at the finish.
East Helena's Jerry Brown Jr., who returned to the drivers seat a couple of months ago after being out of the car for a couple of years, made a late run to finish fourth in the Brown Racing No. 38 Maxim. Josh Ostermiller of Billings took fifth place in the Harvey Ostermiller No. 12 Wesmar-powered Gf1.
Magrath, Alberta youngster Cody Masse finished sixth to match his career best mark. Jeremy McCune was involved in a late race accident but still came back to finish seventh. Jay Burns, Shad Petersen and Roger Cummings rounded out the Top 10.
Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Ostermiller, Perry and Dietz. Perry made a last lap pass of McCune to win Heat 2, and in going from the fifth starting position to win that one he earned the high passing points score of the evening with a mark of 120. As part of Gallatin Speedway's annual Big Sky Supernationals weekend, all heat races were ten laps in length instead of the typical eight.
The ASCS Frontier Region next moves to Billings Motorsports Park for the annual Dan Laber Memorial next Friday and Saturday, September 18th and 19th. J.J. Hickle of Washington is the defending overall winner of the event. The series closes its 2015 season with the rescheduled Montana Round-Up at Electric City Speedway on Friday and Saturday, September 25th and 26th.
