Winter Classic To Benefit Cancer Sufferer
Winter Classic To Benefit Cancer Sufferer
By Mark Humphrey
Fairhaven, Vic Aus. 26th July 2014. Surfcoast Longboarders annual Winter Classic Longboard event will this year donate monies generated from the event to once local Torquay resident Kate Donaldson. Kate in her mid-20's is battling through the disease and has had to shift up to Melbourne along with her parents while she is receiving treatment. The family made the decision to sell up in Torquay and move back to Melbourne in the best interests of Kate. With ongoing regular treatment in Melbourne the family decided they could best support Kate by re-locating to Melbourne.Liam Griggs-Kennelly displays classic longboard surfing.
The Winter Classic is an annual longboard event that Surfcoast Longboarders run with the emphasis on donating monies raised from the event to either an individual or an organisation in need. As part of the event an auction night is being held at the Torquay Front Beach Cafe with all encouraged to get along. Entry is free with the night expected to go through to somewhere around 11pm...
With the heats now completed the action continues tomorrow with finals day. The club is expecting an 8am start at Pt Impossible.
A full report on the event will be posted in sportingscribe.com on Tuesday.

Hi all
Comp results for April 2nd 2016
Kirsten Aplin of Bethany is presented with a cheque for $1600 raised at the Wild Women on Water event in March.
(Kirsten Aplin - 3rd in from left with club president Brian Kuit and organisers and competitors from WWOW).
Saturday’s club comp at Pt. Impossible was a fitting venue to wrap up our successful Wild Women on Water celebration of International Women’s Day.
As well as providing a fabulous day, the March comp raised $1600 for community support organisation Bethany.
Bethany representative Kirsten Aplin was on hand at Saturday’s event to be presented with the cheque.
"Bethany is honoured and very grateful to receive this donation, and I congratulate the
Surfcoast Longboarders Club on their impressive event and a wonderful fundraising effort.
Bethany is one of the region's leading community services organisations, with a long history
of providing support to local individuals and families. This donation will help us continue to
deliver our vital services which include support programs for victims of family violence and a
Gambler's Help program," said Kirsten
Given the success of WWOW – social and financial - The Surfcoast Longboard Club is already looking at ways to support an expanded event next year.
Those who arrived at 7 o’clock for the set-up at last Saturday’s April club competition were greeted with a scene that has been all too rare of late.
Clean, glassy lines of three-foot and better rolling into Pt. Impossible with some early birds out enjoying them.
But it seems like the weather forecast can always be relied upon when it comes to bad news and the predicted south-westerly change swept in by about 7.30 and conditions from then on could be politely described as challenging.
The official version from contest director Laney was: “Wild and woolly.”
At least there was some swell and, with a fairly strong contingent eager to go, competition began with gusto.
Early heats copped the full force of the front although once it had passed through conditions improved for a while until the wind picked up again as the afternoon wore on.
One of the most satisfying developments on Saturday was the number of women club members competing, making it possible to have two women’s divisions – open and over 35.
Either because or in spite of the conditions there were some very tight heats with narrow margins separating surfers.

Hi all
There are still places available in the Harley Ingleby longboard coaching sessions this weekend at $80 per person.
Saturday is for U/21
Sunday is for O/21
You need to contact Cahill Bell-Warren at Surfing Victoria before registering online - see his contact details below.
Please don't let this opportunity slip. Harley's a world champ, great coach and all round nice guy. Surfing Vic and others have put in a lot of work to get him down here, so we want to fill each session and show that the vicco longboard community is up and firing, so that we get more opportunities like this in the future.
The forecast looks promising too!
Cheers! AdrianK (George)

NOOSA FESTIVAL OF SURFING - 25TH ANNIVERSARY
(From our special correspondent in Noosa - George)
Surfcoast Longboarders reputation as a hotbed of talent was reinforced at the 25th anniversary Noosa Festival of Surfing.
It's been another great week of warm weather, but variable waves, with a lot of heats run on the beachy at Noosa Woods, but most afternoons on First Point for some dribblers on the low tide. Thankfully, the swell kicked Friday and Saturday, so all finals were surfed on the point.
Highlights:
obviously, just being here - it is truly beautiful and it was the 25th anniversary
our three finalists - our junior ranks are very healthy
Jye's performance in both the juniors and the logger pro, where he dropped some big scores and led heats at certain times - 3rd in that field was awesome
Morgan's 5th and highest placed Aussie girl in the field - beat 2 Aussie Champs on the way to the final and came up against two world champs in the final
Liam's 8.75 wave in the semi final - had the crowd cheering (not just us) with 3 of his trademark roundhouse cutbacks and a big re-entry on the beach to finish it off
Finalists
Jye Whyatt 3rd in the U/18 Boys
Morgan 5th in the U/18 Girls
Liam 6th in the Open Mens Amateurs
Results - not sure if all are current financial members, but most, if not all, are former members and known to club members
Billy Whitton 10 of 24 in the U/18 Boys
Sam Suendermann 13 of 24 in Open Womens Amateurs
Molly Powell 16 of 24 in Open Womens Amateurs & 25 of 34 in the Women's Pro
Ben Considine 17 of 38 in the Noserider & 25 of 68 in the Logger Pro
Jye Whyatt 17 of 68 in the Logger Pro
Liam 49 of 68 in the Logger Pro
Morgan 30 of 34 in the Women's Pro
Steve Chooka Piec 7 of 24 in the O/65

Hi all
WWOW what a day!
More than 100 people took to Point Impossible on Saturday, the car park quickly filling with 58 competitors and around the same in spectators.
While conditions weren’t perfect at 2ft with a south-easterly breeze, it didn’t stop the lady entrants from shredding and stepping their way down the line in a celebration for International Women’s Day.
It was amazing to see two eight-year old competitors, Rory Reyntjes and Holly Droomer paddle out and surf.
“Holly’s confidence has increased enormously since that one surf in an uncrowded friendly environment, she went surfing again the next day,” said mum Janelle.
“It was such a fun day, and really good to see some quality female surfing. It was so different to other competitions, a really non-intimidating environment for both young and old.”
Perhaps one reason for such a great turn-out was the non-competitive options in the expression session and the mongrel.
The expression session was probably one of the highlights of the day.
Some girls had spent a bit of time preparing outfits and props for this division.
Sam Suendermann wore flippers and managed to still hang five off the nose, like a duck walking on water.
Jesse Muir wore a lovely red and black chequered dress, which she managed to de-robe while riding a wave.
Another competitor managed to remove a pair of exterior bather bottoms whilst surfing her way in.
A dog even got in the water to join its owner and climb on board.
The atmosphere was kicking with musical tracks like Gloria from Patti Smith and Shoop from Salt-N-Peppa and Australian champ Emma Webb provided some very entertaining commentary.
Competitor Kim Byrne said “it was great fun and enjoyable for all levels, abilities and ages, a real credit to those who organised it. Today we witnessed women empowering women in a beautiful environment in and out of the water, this event is only growing.”
“It was so lovely to share the stoke with so many other likeminded chicks,” said Penny Andrews.
Hayley Jeffries of The Fitness Movement provided free massage in a mammoth effort from 7am till 3pm.
And Rachel Hely took a beautiful yoga/ meditation session in the sand with people from five years old up.
Jack Garnett of airtimefilming.com.au captured some amazing drone footage of the event and can be found at vimeo.com/157834496.
Bonappuccino filled the air with coffee aromas and Flatironed fuelled the hungry competitors bellies with New York style toasties.
Thanks to Fiona at Base Legal each competitor enjoyed these complimentary.
The annual Soul Sister award was taken out by Lueca Gartell, who travelled from Tasmania. The award recognises the female with the best attitude and swagger both on land and in the water.
Around $2500 was raised for Bethany through sponsor’s donations at the raffle and auction wall.
Lara Murphy took out the open category with Ange King second and Sasha Leitmanis third.
Riding any board and throwing away all niceties Tiffany Riggs stole the Mongrel first place, with Joe Cole in second and Heidi Atkins third.
The juniors winner was Nadia McCristal, with Lueca Gartell in second and Laila McCristal third.
The Expression Session was won by Sylvia Fogarty-Phipps, with Jenene Nelson in second and Laura Spencer third.
Results in the 040s were Wendy Reyntjes in first, Janelle Droomer second and Anne Stephenson third.
For full results, video and photo footage and news on the next one, head to Facebook #Surfcoast Longboarders Club or visit surfcoastlongboardclub.com
Overall Wild Women on Water was an outstanding success.
Of course, success doesn’t come without effort and the organisation that went into WWOW would have been obvious to even the most casual observer.
Coffee and food vans, massages, plenty of healthy food, raffles, auctions, show bags, prizes and some very cool trophies.
All a testament to the work that went into the event and special thanks have to go to Heidi Atkins, Lissie Doyle, Sam Suendermann, and Emma Webb for organising an amazing festival with help from Rebecca Prosser and Janelle Droomer.
Oh, and the blokes had a great time too. As the first event on this year’s calendar to get into the water, Saturday’s competition will stand out as a high point – not least for the level of sophistication.
The regular Surfcoast Longboard Club comp managed to get through five divisions – surfing before and after the women.

Surfcoast Longboarders Feb. Comp report..
COWABUNGA DUDES……well, perhaps not quite!
Season 2016 kicked off with something less than the bang we all hoped for as the sketchy conditions that have tormented us over summer frustrated our opening round.
It’s a tough call sometimes for the contest director, but the decision is always made with the best interests of members in mind.
Still It’s difficult to point to another sport that is so dependent on factors out of anyone’s control - at least we’re used to it.
And on a beautiful, warm and sunny morning, it gave us all the opportunity to do the one thing we are all experts at – talking about the surf and surfing.
Indeed, despite the lack of competition, Saturday’s gathering had a distinctly festive air with a lot of catching up after the summer recess.
It also meant that members could fill out their subscription forms with a little more care than the usual scramble while donning a wettie pre heat!
And how pleasing it was too to see so many signing up, which holds the promise of a great year of competition.
On that subject just a reminder that members must be financial to compete so that the club fulfils its insurance obligations.
Membership forms are available on the website and subscriptions can be made a number of ways, including online transfer or old school drinking vouchers (cash).
Saturday’s lack of waves did give this year’s committee an opportunity to finesse plans for next month’s club competition – Wild Women on Water - which celebrates International Women’s Day. (Check the poster for details)
This event has become something of a fixture on the club calendar and appears to be going from strength to strength.
It is a signature event for Surfcoast Longboarders as part of the club’s support for women’s surfing and its efforts to attract more female members.
WWOW comp will be held on March 5 and, yes, blokes will get to surf so don’t miss out!
One last positive to come out of Saturday’s event, or lack thereof, is that the aggregate points’ race for this year’s championships is still wide open!
Hope you all get plenty of waves between now and March
