FIM ASIA SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016 NEWCASTLE | ASIA TITLE RACE BEGINS!

20 International Supermoto Riders, 12 Countries,
Contends for Pride and Championship Title

NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA, 2 SEPTEMBER 2016 – The FIM Asia Supermoto Championships flags off its 2016 series with 20 international supermoto riders from 12 countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, USA, United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and France, contends for the top podium spot, championship points, and a golden-ticket to a global supermoto race this weekend, 3 and 4 September 2016.

Newcastle, a beautiful city that’s known for its abundance of scenic beaches and one of the top surfing destinations in the world, transform its shore into thunderous motorcycle orchestra and cheers during this father’s day weekend. Over 40,000 fans and families are expected to witness another historical moment down supermoto’s history.

“Every rider is ready to pour their hearts out to contend for the championship title. With Newcastle as the opening round, this will set the pace and benchmark the upcoming races in Indonesia, The Philippines and Malaysia,” said Satheswaran Mayachandran, chief executive officer of Asia Supersports Group, the exclusive license holder of FIM Asia Supermoto Championships.

The opening round’s track will somewhat differ from other tracks encountered by supermoto riders, with 329 metres of dirt section immediately from the starting line as oppose to a usual supermoto track where the off-road section appears at the later part of the lap. Riders with better dirt skills will be at an advantageous position. In addition, a 600-metre tarmac section will also feature a couple of long straights with several chicane turns. Spectators can expect a high-speed battle once the riders hit the roads.

FIM Asia Supermoto Championships 2016’s round 1 will flame the track with a variant of top-notch motorcycles appearing on track. The competition between KTM, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Honda, and Suzuki motorcycles will highlight its mechanical capabilities in enduring jumps, handling and speed, with the optimum performance motorcycle prevail as the top bike.

2005 Supermoto World Champion Boris Chambon, Australia’s three-time Superbike World Champion Troy Bayliss, and United Kingdom’s SupermotoGP rider Chris Hodgson will be amongst the few confirmed as wild-card riders for the race. 2015 AMA Supermoto Amateur National Champion Steve Alkyer; Australia’s Andy McLiesh; and New Zealand’s Duncan Hart, adds on to the total line-up of six wild-card riders, beefing up the competition.

19-year-old Makoto Arai, the youngest contender, will represent Japan to compete for the 2016 championship title. Born on 4 December 1997, the Husqvarna FC450 rider has an astounding record in his home-country at the All Japan Supermoto S1 Pro, S1, S1 Open and S2 categories.
