GALLOWS BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Friday, August 12, 2016): The opening day of the Australian Bodyboard Titles endured a day of blustery onshore waves as Open and Junior competitors attempted to cement a position into the upcoming semi-finals.
Jake Metcalf (City Beach, WA) ensured he made his mark on the Open Mens division, performing a wide array of acrobatic manoeuvres to notch up a respectable 14.00 two-wave heat total (out of a possible 20 points). Metcalf made light work of the difficult waves executing the aerials with relative ease and as a result booked himself a spot in the quarterfinals and made it known that he’d be the man to beat in the upcoming rounds.
Other Open Mens first round winners included: Grant Gardener (Laurieton, NSW), Tawa Hura (St. Andrews Beach, Vic), Nathan Wilson (Kiama Downs, NSW) and Mitch East (Sandy Beach, NSW).
Liam Newman (Maroubra, NSW) sent a warning shot to his competitors, posting an impressive 7.75 wave score in the first round of the Cadets (Under-16) division. Newman threw down a massive combination of manoeuvres to post the previously mentioned score and get a convincing win over Henry Gibson (Falcon, WA) who claimed the runner-up spot.
Other Cadets round one heat winners included: Patrick Franklyn (Fremantle, WA) and Harry Crain (Copacabana, NSW). All three aforementioned Cadets will make their next appearance in the second round.
The Australian Surf Festival will commence each day at 7:30am with the call for the days schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am. The event hotline number is 0458 247 212 which will leave a voice recorded message each morning of the event.
