MCCLURE & LOGUE TAKE BIG WINS ON THE MOUNT
MCCLURE & LOGUE TAKE BIG WINS ON THE MOUNT
Speedway racing at Ballarat & Moorabool Shire’s home of motorsport ‘Redline Raceway’ dished out
a great night of thrills and spills with some of those spills sending drivers to hospital & others
sending drivers out of racers with Brad McClure taking the big Street Stock win & Peter Logue the
Wingless Sprint victory.
Thankfully those that were sent to the hospital bruised and battered are being cared for by great
medical teams and the competitors are in great spirits & will all get to fight another day.
Street Stocks were in town competing for the locally supported “Duo Mobile’ Eliminator Cup and the
Victorian Champion Brad McClure came out on top with a sensational win over the Australian
Champion Anthony Beare whilst an outstanding drive from Warrnambool youngster Steven Watts
seen him transfer from the non-qualifiers race into the main race and push through from the back to
finish in third, a champion in the making.
Fifteen heat races were held with each competitor having three chances to earn their qualifying
points. Chris Stewart, McClure, Beare, Brooke Ferguson a Ballarat local, Mick Dann, Darren
Giacometti, Beare again, Jason Degoldi from Sebastopol, Morris Ahearn, Dann again, McClure a
second time, Steven Gartner, Dale Blomeley, Jacob Vuillermin & the event sponsor Jack Bishop.
In heat racing Matt Nelson a serious threat on victory prior to the event rolled in his first heat race
before finishing one lap and his car was wrecked and seen no further part. In round two Peter
Crutchley’s run came to a halt with a crunch & he was sent to hospital, South Australian Rhys
Heinrich was leading the Australian champion Beare before bursting a tyre in his first heat and
everything could have been very much different for him whilst Rocky Grima was ordered to put his
car on the trailer for being a naughty lad by one of the stewards.
Six drivers transferred from the last chance qualifier including David Donegan, Watts, Darren Forrest,
Throckmorton, Dave Pollard & Heinrich to join the back of the feature event whilst McClure won a
pole shuffle shoot out defeating Beare with Jason Degoldi unfortunately ending up being smashed
against the concrete in the shootout & missing the main event.
Twenty one cars began the main race with a ten lap first section of racing ending with Beare leading
McClure, Ahearn, Dann & Jamie Lock whilst Watts sensationally had moved up to eleventh spot for
the start of the second segment.
McClure finished out on top on the second segment of ten laps with Beare, Ahearn, Dann & Gartner
in the top five whilst outside the top eight Giacometti was amongst those eliminated. Watts was the
last man in the final eight finishing eighth in the second segment.
For the final fifteen lap segment Beare got the best of the start and led McClure. Amongst
happenings Ahearn got penalised by stewards for contact with Dann which sent Dann spinning, the
driver & stewards of course have different views on the contact.
A few laps from the end of the Eliminator Cup, McClure seized the lead back from Beare, Watts
moved up into third with Ahearn working his way back to fourth spot and David Barrie driving
sensationally well in the final group. The finish line came and McClure had defeated Beare, Watts,
Ahearn, Barrie, Gartner, Lock & Dann.
McClure was delighted to get back on the winners list. “This has been a long time coming with the
things that have gone wrong this season so far. It is a relief to be back on the top dais here at
Redline, thank you to everybody for their support & well done to the Redline team who just keep on
putting up great races for us to come and compete at.”
The Wingless Sprint racing didn’t escape carnage either with Georgia McLeod unfortunately amongst
those that were sent to hospital during the night whilst her rollover was gentle compared to the
massive seven times over Kevin Schembri roll into and through turn one.
Mark Balcombe, Wayne Logue, Layton Orchard, Luke Weel, David Cook & Daniel Storer won six heat
race events with three being cancelled after consultation between the Wingless President & the
Redline venue in the interests of time due to the ambulance requirements during the night then the
Victorian champion & Ballarat local James Wren won the last chance qualifier to make the main
race.
The feature event seen a sensational battle between Wayne Logue & Cook for much of the race
before late in the proceedings Wayne’s father Peter and Travis Millar put themselves in the picture.
Peter got past Cook then soon after he passed Wayne for the lead, Millar moved forward and past
the same competitors and at the very last lap passed Peter Logue under protest for his pass on
Wayne Logue which involved connection & in the stewards opinion impediment on Logue.
Peter Logue crossed the line second on track however gained the chequered flag & the win in the
‘Alfies Excavations & Plant Hire’ Super Series to defeat Wayne Logue, Cook, Rhys Baxter & Sam
Wren.’
In Mini Sprint action Kevin Bomford defeated David May, Jason Lynn, Owen Bulman & Luke Hickson
whilst the V8 Thunder Sedans didn’t get a final due to time constraints.
Redline Raceway returns to action on February the sixth for the annual Chivers Memorial for
Standard Saloons which should attract thirty competitors from around Victoria & Amca Nationals.
