One new addition to the club is their $25,000 Theodolite which is used to accurately measure competition distances. Club president Richard Lawysz spoke of the new addition. “Basically the club had to raise $5000 with Athletics Victoria sponsoring the rest. It’s the way of the future and allows the club to monitor athlete’s distances more accurately”.

The brand new theodolite is an impressive looking piece of equipment that will no doubt record some fantastic personal achievements for years to come.
In conjunction to their Saturday competition Geelong Athletics is also running the Twilight Trot around the Eastern Gardens on a Monday evening. Now in its 23rd year, there is a choice of 1, 2 or 3 lap events which cater for both the serious and social competitors. Geelong Interclub competition is conducted under IAAF rules and is aimed at providing both an enjoyable social activity for athletes and officials and helping those who wish to further their abilities to do so.
Geelong Interclub: Field competition is conducted in age groups with points awarded for placement in that age group, (see Standards for further information). Track competition is conducted in heats that are graded by ability with the results then being ranked in age groups and point scored accordingly. Age groups for all interclub competition are Men: U14,U16, U18, U20, Open, 40+,50+ & 60+ and Women: U14, U16, U18, U20, Open & Vets (35+) taken from age on the day of competition.
Geelong Cup: Is a club ‘team’ style of competition. Teams are of mixed gender and age groups and some of the events are a little different to the normal competition. The cup was introduced to provide some variety and to promote team spirit. Points will be allocated from this competition towards the Geelong Centre Premierships.
Geelong Championships: Formal entry is required for each event at Championships. Entry forms and closing dates are listed in this handbook. Age Groups for all championship events is taken from the 31st of December of the year of competition. i.e. if you turn 18 at any time during the current year you will compete in the Under 20 age group.
Officials: Clubs are to supply at least the number of officials allocated by the Officials Portfolio Manager each week. Points will be deducted for every official that a club is short of their allocation. The number of officials is allocated according to the number of registered athletes in each club. At the start of the season the numbers of registrations for the previous season are used and the allocations are to be updated at the start of December.
All our officials are volunteers and would gladly welcome any assistance. If you are interested in helping – or are rostered on by your club – please report to the competition office by 1.10 pm.
Athletes should report to the competition office to pay their weekly competition fee before commencing their events for the day. Athletes should sign on at the competition office for the walk, hurdle, distance and steeple events.
Competing at Geelong can lead to selection in our State League team. State League is the ‘A’ Grade competition for Victoria in which we have teams in the Men’s and Women’s competition.
Athletes and Officials can also participate in various championships at both State and National levels, which can lead to international selection.

Competition Update - Round 4 - Men's
Sprints
Heat 1 of the Men 200m was a quality field and this was proven when all athletes went under 23.3 seconds. Parker Lawrence (Chi) took out his second 200m race victory for the year with Jayden Barmby (BEL) and Jacob Cesar (COR) in hot pursuit. The invitation 100m saw Damian Horan (DKN) take out another tightly contested heat with Jake Penny (GLG) and Jacob Cesar (COR) the best of the challengers.

Hurdles
This week saw the return of Sean Marshman (CHI) to the hurdles and he collected the victory in the long hurdles. Special mention to Will Humble (CHI) who had to deal with more obstacles than just the 10 hurdles on the track on his way to coming in second to Sean in the race.

Jayden won the event in a height of 1.90m with Euan Spikers (GLG) jumping double his own height, and Harvey Murrant (GLG) jumping just over half of his height recording second place finishes at 1.70m. Competition Update – Men’s
Sprints
In the short sprints it is Jacob Sesar (COR) and Parker Lawrence (CHI) who have started the best. Jacob taking out all three 100m races contested so far this season as well as splitting victories with Parker in the 200m. Ben Smith (CHI) and Josh Perdrisat (GLG) have also posted impressive early season times in both sprints. With only one 400m race being contested so far it is harder to get an accurate reading on the form, however Damian Horan (DKN) and Harvey Murrant (GLG) recorded the fastest times in heat one.
Middle Distance & Distance
In the 800m Jayden Barmby (BEL) and Christian Davis (COR) are the only two athletes to have gone under 2 minutes however Kousha Kouzani (CHI) has been hot on their heels on both occasions. Moving out to the 1500m Lachie Barber (CHI), Isaac Hockey (CHI) and Eamon Anderson (DKN) have been far and away the standouts and this looks set to develop into a hotly contested event as the season rolls on. Moving further out still to the 3000m Julian Spence (CHI) and Daniel Hutchinson (CHI) have both recorded times under 9 minutes, with Simon Blight (BEL) the other athlete who has taken out a victory in this event.
Hurdles
The 400m hurdles has been the only hurdles race completed in the boys with Nick Milton (CHI) and Harvey Murrant (GLG) having taken out the victories across the two weeks. Mason Spikers (GLG) also put in a strong performance in his first time over the hurdles this season.
Throws
Unlike the women the best throwers have been split across all four disciplines. Alan Hawkins (CHI) in the Javelin, Peter Wrzuszczak (GLG) in the discus, Robert Holzer (GLG) in the Hammer and Australian representative Damien Birkenhead in the Shot have the furthest throws recorded. Other performances of note include Oliver Courtnay (CHI) in the Shot and Marty Jackson (CHI) in the discus and the shot.
Vertical Jumps
In the vertical jumps Lachlan Burns (CHI) has easily recorded the highest vault of the season however Steve Polizzi (CHI) has managed to take out 2/3 of the Pole Vault competitions that have been held so far. Jack Henry (BEL) has recorded the highest High Jump with Liam Mullen (CHI) has also taken home one victory for the season.
Horizontal Jumps
Harvey Murrant (GLG) has impressed early in both horizontal jumps. He has recorded the longest distance in both disciplines with Nick Hodgson (GLG) having recorded the second and third best competition results.
Walks
James Christmas (COR) continues to dominate the walks, having taken out all 3 events held and continuing to stretch ahead of his nearest competitors.

Competition Update – Women’s
Sprints
In the sprints it has been the Geelong Guild girls who have dominated, with the fastest 9 athletes in the 100m, and the fastest 7 in the 200m with Ange Byrt, Georgie Boal and Lily Bayes leading the way. Again in the 400m event it is the Geelong Guild girls showing the way with Tess Kirsopp-Cole and Lily Bayes the only athletes to have run 60 seconds or faster.
Middle Distance and Distance
In the middle distance and distance events it has been a different story, with Athletics Chilwell and Deakin Athletics sharing most of the top positions. Klara Dess (GLG) however has recorded the fastest 800m time but Heidi Demeo (CHI) and Sarah Waters (DKN) the fastest 1500m and 3000m times respectively.
Hurdles
Shelby Hackett (BEL) and Abby Badrock (CHI) are the best performed female hurdlers at this early stage of the season, having split victories in the 400m and 100m hurdles events respectively.
Throws
As for the throws, the Shot, Discus and Hammer continue to be dominated by Nat Debeljuh (COR) having thrown the furthest in each of these three disciplines. Nat has also thrown the the third longest Javelin having just been edged out from completing the quaddie by Shantelle Maurer (GLG) and Kasey Parish (CHI).
Horizontal Jumps
The three horizontal jump victories so far this season have been split. Caitlin Picket (CHI) has so far recorded the longest long jump while Anabelle Dunn (CHI) has recorded the furthest Triple Jump.
Vertical Jumps
Grace Bath (COR), Ruby Cordner (CHI) and Jacinta Burns (CHI) have been the most successful pole vaulters in their respective ages. With Grace having taken out all three victories for the season to date.
The high jump was a close affair with Ruby Pekin-Schlict (GLG) taking the honours in the most competitive day of high jumping so far with 1.50m with 3 other athletes trailing close behind having successfully cleared 1.45m.

Athletics in Geelong is already approaching its 5th competition week this Saturday. Admittedly one was ruined by the lightening, and another wasn’t classified as a Shield competition – however there have already been some super impressive results recorded down at Landy Field for this early in the season, as well as some equally remarkable feats by our Juniors at the Victorian All Schools Championships. Stay tuned for a comprehensive update on how the competition at Landy Field has been shaping up in our next lot of posts.
Two performances of particular note from the past weekend at All Schools include Lachie Barber and his World Junior Championships qualifying time and to Oliver Courtnay who broke not one but two Vicotrian Records, one in the Shot Put and another in the Hammer Throw.
There are a number of exciting events coming up before Christmas including the:
- Victorian Relay Championships on the 28th of November at Albert Park
- Australian All Schools Championships on the 4-6th of December at Albert Park
- Zatopek10 on the 5th of December at Albert Park
- Geelong Championships Day 1 on the 20th of December
Whilst still seemingly a long way away there is lots of work already going into organising the Country Championships which will be held in Geelong the weekend before Australia day next year, and the AV Shield Final on the 6th of February. Put these dates on your calendar!
I know this has been a long post but Geelong Athletics hopes to be posting more regular competition updates to keep everyone up to date on all the amazing accomplishments achieved by our Geelong athletes.
Pre-entry for all events will be in effect from this Saturday so make sure you get down to the track nice and early so you don’t miss out. The early weather forecast for Saturday looks promising so everyone get down to Landy Field and have a run, jump or throw!
